Mellow Hostel Sri Lanka Hostel

The owner is a horrible person. But see it for yourself. I was a volunteer at Mellow, along with many others, and my only condition prior to come work was to get a private bedroom. He agreed.
The job entailed helping with branding.
Everyday I sat with the owner to report on the progesss of my work for 2 hours at least. Plus the 2-4 hours I worked there everyday.
He never gave me private accommodation. I had to sleep in a dorm with the guests, sometimes on a mattress on the floor. Eventually I got “upgraded” to the private bedroom and I had to share a queen size bed with another volunteer in the house of the owner.
Some days he would sleep in the bedroom with us, but most days he would walk in and start talking to us about work while we were in bed — without knocking — and continue to speak to us even if I was in my underwear or what not.
Next to this he would text me everyday to ask me where I am if he didn’t see me around, asked me who I hanged out with and what I spoke about.
At the end of my stay I had developed the branding brief for the hostel, the social media strategy and designed and styled the current lounge/main area that looked like a dumpster when I first arrived.
His disregard for the working conditions of the volunteer program, his treatment to us, his lack of fulfilment on promises and his general attitude drove me to a panic attack.

AMAZING! I stayed at Mellow for around 2 months and used Mellow as my base for traveling around Sri Lanka! The owner Deniz is an awesome guy and extremely welcoming and friendly! By the end of two months Mellow was my Sri Lankan home. The hostel is located in an awesome place right outside one of the best surf breaks on the South Coast. Coming from South Africa, the surfing met every one of my expectations and waking up and rolling out of the bed and into the surf was just the dream. Ask Cihan for all the surfing tips and knowledge. Other than surfing there are plenty of gems situated all around Mellow and activities to fulfill your traveling dreams. Ask the staff there for tips! I had the privellage of meeting people from all over the world. The hostel had a perfect dynamic for meeting new people and making new friends. I'll treasure these friendships forever! I will definitely be back one day hopefully sooner than I imagine. I thoroughly recommend Mellow to any traveler going through Sri Lanka! Thank you to all at Mellow who made my trip so special!
