Dusky Lodge Hostel

Great place to stay, excellent location with off street parking.

Rooms were clean. Parts of hostel were going through earthquake restoration, but what was done was nice. Beds comfortable.

Immediately charmed by this stay upon arrival. Great Wi-Fi, nice room. Kitchen was awesome too. What wasn't great was the snide remarks of the cleaners in the morning complaining loudly in what felt calculated and deliberate about the "lack of respect" or something that was "disgusting" while I was in the kitchen collecting my things. Having just finished in the kitchen myself I saw nothing that was an afront to cleanliness save a few plates in the sink a few residents seemed to have left after leaving for work. I left your venue feeling outraged at the attitude of your cleaning staff who were loud, crass, moany, and rude. The kitchen was not that bad guys, get your kicks in ways other than "subtly" complaining to each other with a guest in the same room then giggling at the brashness of what you said.

Spacious, pretty and good quality for price, but toilet not super clean and the kitchen no more. I recommend without hesitation.

Great hostel. Warm and welcoming. Looked clean enough. Room was more spacious then I have seen in other hostels. could use more power plugs in the rooms tho. 1 wall plug is not enough for a 10 dorm room. some of the long term people were absolutely out of line. In the past 4-5 years I have been traveling a lot and have stayed in many many hostels and have even been a long termer more then once myself. Never have I seen a behavior like that. Bunch of drunk people. A girl started a fight with a guy asking him if he wants to punch her while trying to punch him. They got close enough to me that I got up from my seat and sat further away. Poor night port tried to deal with them and calmly get them out or to bed and I think at the end he called police. Nothing to do with the hostel really. Just something the manager/owner should be aware off. I would always come back as I didnt feel threatened myself but it could have escalated really quickly from what I have seen.

Even though it was pretty cold while I was in Kaikoura, this hostel was always really warm, especially in the kitchen, where they always had a fire lit. The atmosphere here was great and there's an awesome view of the mountains. The hostel's not right in the town center but it's only about a 10 minute walk. I've been in New Zealand for 6 months and this is the best hostel I've stayed at here. It was really cozy and nice.

Bone carving on demand. If the (really friendly) owner is in a good mood he'll explain and guide you to an unforgettable souvenir which you can carry around you neck. Still got mine from 2013. Thanks to you.

Don't stay at this hostel! After (not having slept for) a few hours (I stayed from 10 pm till 5 am) I had 100 bumps because of bedbugs. I sent an email to tell them and they answered that I should have said it when I was there as if it were my fault there were bedbugs. I could not say anything when I was there because there was nobody at the reception when I left at 5 am. And they showed me no sympathy at all. I replied that I did not like the reaction, but they have not even responded!

Solid hostel. With jacuzzi and well-kept bathrooms. 8 Bed room was pleasantly clean and bed was comfortable.

Decent location, close to the grocery store. Clean rooms, bathrooms could have been better. Friendly staff. You can't book through hostel world though.

Nice backpackers with awesome views of the kaikoura ranges. Had such a chilled out time here. Also a big kitchen space and plenty areas to chill out. Showers were good. Staff the best, so friendly and relaxed. Sunbeds out on the deck are great, not ever seen this in a backpackers and it was good way to chill out in the sun with a beer.

I liked this hostel in general, but wasn't a fan of the 10 bed dorm. The bed I got was placed so close to the bed next to it that you could almost spoon the other person (the alternative was a top bunk in the middle of the room with nothing on the sides to prevent you from sliding off), and there were hardly any power outlets. Also, the Wi-Fi hardly ever worked, but at least they didn't charge for it. Staff was super friendly and the kitchen was nice and clean. Tldr: book this place, but not the 10 bed dorm. And treat yourself to a sim card.

It's an alright hostel, the facilities do the job. The kitchen is good, the bathrooms are kept clean. The main complaint is that there is one plug socket in a dorm for 6 people — really annoying to have to sit in the common area and charge stuff and not being able to charge overnight All in all an alright place.

The dusky lodge is conveniently located a short walk from a grocery store and pharmacy as well asbswveral pubs and laundry. The room was well kept and clean and staff were extremely friendly and quick to offer advice about local attractions.

My favorite backpacker in New Zealand. I was there during the winter then its was quiet (but not to much! ) The managers are the best : cool and available everytime! The hot pool is top! A lot of space (3 kitchen) and good for people who are looking for a cheap hostel.

Great hostel, mainly filled with people working in the town. Nice vibes.

Loving it still here atmosphere the hospitality the scenery the company excellent and the host Claire bear does an extraordinary job and goes out of her way for guess highly recommend the dusky backpackers lodge to anyone kapai kaikoura.

Stayed there yesterday (22/10/2017) and I can honestly say it is the worst backpacker hostel I have stayed in so far. Dirty, filthy, dishes sit there for days, moldy fridges. The room smelled stuffy. Not recommended!

I don't know what place everybody else was reviewing, maybe they had their eyes closed? I wouldn't stay here again if it was free. This place was FREEZING, absolutely no heating in communal areas. It was filthy, dirty, messy. The woman at front destination had a bad attitude. There was no control over drunk and loud guests. It felt like I was squatting. Worst backpackers yet.

I spent just one night But I really enjoyed. The place is really cosy and in a good position. Good value for money.

Good price. Good position, 5 minutes walk from the center. Has a bakery, takeaway and small dairy shop next to it. Really clean and comfortable. Also has 2 swimming pools.

Excellent facilities here with free pool, spa and hot tub. Five minutes from town centre and 10 minute walk to large supermarket. Nice staff and plenty of leisure space. A balcony view of the hills at that.

Loved the feel of the place. Felt like we were in a different country yet only 2.5 hours away from home! Loved the pool and spa (even on a wet evening) and 4 massive and awesome kitchens to choose from! Fun staff and very welcoming. Kaikora is a magic place to check out — felt safe despite the recent earthquakes and majority of the township is open for shopping/ eating and playing.

What a beautiful hostel the Dusky is! Prime location to the beach and bars. We arrived after hours and they fit us right in. Friendly staff that are willing to help you out. The rooms are great. Very clean and comfortable. Fun friendly environment, worth your time! Enjoy!

When I checked out of here I'm pretty sure I checked out of paradise. Affordable accommodation, nice and helpful staff, along with a pool hot tub and sauna, what more could I want? Clean hostel with comfortable rooms, I'd gladly stay again and recommend Dusky Lodge to other travelers.
