Review of Airport Ascot Motel 4*

CHEAP AND NASTY! I booked my Mum and step-Dad into this hotel for the night before their return to Melbourne, as I had to work and couldn't get them to the airport for their morning flight. They are in their 70's and didn't have the money for an expensive hotel. Nonetheless, there is a basic standard that you would expect from a hotel that is allowed to take money from people to stay there. This is not just a cheap hotel, but a cheap and nasty hotel! On arrival, we were told that they would be 'upgraded' as the room they had booked was having problems with the bathroom. They were offered a 2 bedroom self-contained suite which was on the 3rd level. As mentioned, they are both in their 70's and had to carry their luggage up two flights of stairs. It's a cheap hotel — so perhaps fair enough… We get into the room and the first thing we see is a cockroach on the kitchen shelf. Given benefit of the doubt, it can happen anywhere… but then another, and another… all coming out of the kitchen cabinetry. I went down to reception to ask for a can of pest spray and he started rummaging around the rather grubby looking reception area for something, but no luck. I follow the desk attendance up to the first floor kitchen area (which I'm assuming is a communal kitchen), and it is disgusting! I'm not exaggerating when I say that the bench top looked like it had been wiped down with grease. The cabinet doors were falling off and there was stuff piled up on one side of the kitchen. He searched around, including the cleaners' (what a joke) room. No bug spray to be found. I took myself to the service station to purchase some cockroach spray so that my Mum could feel slightly comfortable about sleeping in the room. I took the receipt ($11.50) to reception and said that they could keep the can and I would like the manager to refund the purchase price to my step-Dad's credit card. I left there, feeling quite uncomfortable about leaving them to stay in this place. I spoke with my Mum later and she advised that they had 10 more cockroaches since I had left, the toilet leaked and the hook for the bathroom towel fell off when she put her towel on it. Seriously, this place is worse than Faulty Towers! The front desk attendant advised that he had spoken to his manager and they were not going to refund my money for the can of cockroach spray. They offered my parents another room, but really, what's the point? The whole place looked grotty, they'd be no better off. Do yourself a favour and pay the extra few dollars to stay somewhere else!
