Great food and friendly staff makes for a good afternoon out.

Great place to go for a beer during/after work. Atmosphere is good and bar staff are friendly. Easy access off George St.

Decent selection of meals which caters to all tastes. Quick and friendly service. Was able to book a table for lunch during the week which was nice, as it's a worker favourite.

Clean rooms but dirty utensils. The hotel also has a weird smell in the lobby. But overall, for the price really good.

I wish to say we didn’t enjoy our stay. We payed good money for our room, and we ended up in an adjoining room. We got no sleep as the people in the adjoining room talked all night and when we did sleep they woke us at 5am. We could hear everything clearly. Told reception on leaving, no apology nothing. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone. Very disappointed.

A very convenient location just down from central station. The rooms are nicely furnished and very comfortable. Given the location and quality of the rooms, the pricing is great for such a central location. Have stayed here a couple of times now and enjoyed each stay.

The place is historic, and gives that away in a faint aged, musty odour — not unpleasant but discernible. Rooms are clean and serviceable, with central heating, ceiling fan, usual amenities. Window over central void does not open. Bed a bit soft and slightly rocky — fine for a single person but less satisfactory for a couple. Reception professional and competent. Noisy bar on George Street, but room quiet. No place to sit outside of room except 6 chairs in lobby. "Bistro" fairly uninviting. But location excellent — 3 minute walk from Central Station.

Grotty place with arrogant staff. Beds are not for people with an orthopaedic issues. Breakfast is reheated supermarket product. Security are young hot heads who are looking to provoke and not implement NSW responsible standards, when challenged they backed down… can’t see a real issue here if security staff are backing down and not enforcing state legislative rules? Clearly this is egocentric behaviour verses true best practise guidelines. In short an adhoc facility with little desire for customer satisfaction. Spend a little more and find somewhere else.

Well I stayed here recently. The room I had. Provided all I needed and more. The location was central and convenient for me. The staff were friendly. I would definitely stay here again.

Went to the Great Southern Hotel for lunch with some colleagues. Though the decor is retro, it has a modern vibe with pleasant background music, friendly staff, and plenty of amenities to keep you occupied. The food is delivered fast, and fresh. It is well priced and tastes fantastic. I highly recommend coming here for lunch, dinner, or just for a casual drink.

Stayed one night. Breakfast was good. Bathroom and room clean and tidy. The reception staff seemed abit aloof when I asked about parking. Book it when you book the room, otherwise you pay for Wilson's parking just up the street. The kitchen and housekeeping staff where very friendly.

Ordinary and overpriced hotel. Great location, friendly staff and lobby has a nice display of antiques. However, rooms are very small and dingy. Too much old furniture occupied most of the available space. Limited supply of toiletries in bathroom. Wi-Fi is not even free. You will find much better rooms at the nearby Metro Hotel for a similar rate.

A basic, affordable Sydney stay. 2 minutes walk from central station. Close to everything you’d need: food and drink (restaurants, fast food, convenience stores, pubs, clubs, China Town), shopping (Paddy’s Market, Priceline, Daiso), public transport, and tourist activities. Not the place if you’re looking for a ‘room with a view’.

I went here for lunch. The food was decent pub food. Nothing flash. But definitely fine for a pub meal. The beers I had were really good though so they've got a good beer set up. Reasonably priced beer for Sydney as well.

Lovely hotel with very helpful and friendly staff breakfast was lovely. Great location. Can't comment on the price as went new years eve and paid probable 5 times the standard price.

Been coming here for years (bar and restaurant only) and it's always good. They have friendly staff, a good sports bar and fantastic restaurant open until 9:30 each night (best T-Bone steaks in Sydney). They also have a very decent happy hour from 5-7 with a good selection beers including your James Squire varieties at $5 per schooner, and your Aussie usuals for $4.50. Also has VIP gaming facilities.

Very handy to Central train station. Good staff, husband loved happy hour. Had everything we wanted. Our 3rd visit and will stay there again.

Our room was next to the lift so quite noisy of a night. Shower head was spraying out in all directions and the coffee was awful. Very small room need to get some decent pillows they were paper thin. But all in all it's close to everything.

Food was delicious. Drinks were reasonable. Got a bit noisy in the late afternoon. Popular hotspot. Would definitely go again.

Solid hotel with plenty of room and a modern shower. Walking distance to Central Station and several restaurants nearby. Felt fairly safe!

My parents were catching a train in from the country, but it was delayed. So, I needed to kill a couple of hours. I decided to get drunk. I ordered a jug of beer for $12 on there awesome monday special. Then, my parents messaged me and said they were no longer delayed. I skulled a jug of beer in front of the staff and no one blinked an eye. Five stars.

Close to central train station with easy walk to shopping and business areas in Sydney. Rooms just standard. Vodafone reception average. Clean rooms reasonable breakfast buffet. Closely situated to noodle and ramen shops out the back.

Room size was good for 2 people. General area was good being close to the trains and the soon to be George St Light Rail. Food at the hotel was excellent. The only complaint I have is the lack of a good place to park a car or taxi for luggage collection but the hotel will hold luggage for customers.

This hotel is value for money especially in Sydney. Staff are very friendly and helpful. It is being revamped and it is in need of it. We found it to be in a great location for our days out and about. Very close to central train station. Breakfast very good.

I tell ya what the Great Southern Bar would have to be one of the greatest () bars I've ever been to. The bar staff, are spectacular. The best! And you know what they make a damn good Mojito. Would definitely recommend giving this place a visit.

Great deal on hotel room for four nights for a last minute booking, amazing buffet breakfast, staff were always friendly and eager to help. Awesome location, short walk to everything; back entrance/exit backs right onto Chinatown. Awesome pub/bistro right downstairs — busy at night but can't hear any noise from the room. Loved the Art Deco style of the place. It was being renovated at the time of my stay, but I wasn't inconvenienced, there was no noisy work or bad smell, or any difficulties whatsoever. Not a five star hotel, but it gets five stars from me, definitely feel like I got more than what I paid for. This will be my first choice for a room when I am in Sydney next.

Clean & tidy rooms, everything you need for an overnight or few night's stay. Location is perfect — so central to everything. Great bar with lots of beverage options. Didn't have the breakfast so cannot comment on the food. Staff friendly enough. Extra cost for Wi-Fi. No complaints. Would stay again. Thanks for having us!

It didn't have a window but did have a skylight. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel is close to good Chinese and Korean restaurants. Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper as there is quite a bit of noise on weekend nights from patrons of bars nearby and the current roadworks.

Probably one of the best bars I have ever been in, and I've been in a few. Great menu, extensive and well priced with huge portions and will suit everybody. Wonderful bar team, best service and happy hour. When I visit Sydney this is the place I gravitate to (and patrons are decent ok) do yourself a favour …

The hotel is located in wonderful place right next to China town and Central train station, it makes it accessible to almost all Sydney attractions. I noticed that windows on the hotel (at least in my room) could not be open and this caused a little ventilation problem. However the price is perfect for what you get.

It's fine. Cheap rooms, affordable drinks and not too awful. Plus, easy access to Sydney's best dumplings restaurant behind it.

This hotel was the worse I have stayed in showers way to small had to turn on your lights with your card elevators very not right and honestly every time I walked passed that bar entry it a very disqusting stale smell I will never stay at that motel again.

The main reason for my visit to the Great Southern Hotel was to spend a few hours somewhere comfortable whilst trying my luck on the pokies. Unfortunately I didn't become a millionaire. I certainly made use of the free peanuts and soft drinks all night. The bathrooms never disappoint. They're always well stocked with plenty of handwash and paper Towels. And those nifty sanitary paper toilet seat protectors.

Room was clean and tidy, checkin was seamless and all staff we encountered went out of their way to help. We will be back.

The food here is above average and we enjoyed it a lot. The alcohol selection could be improved though as there's a few well known brands missing from. The price of the food is great although the alcohol prices are a tad high for the surroundings. It's not the ritziest place but it is only 5 mins from Central. The outdoor seating area is on the footpath on one of the busiest streets of Sydney and is a great place to meet friends and socialise while watching the world go by. Recommended for a great meal.

While the great southern isn't a luxury hotel, the combination of price, location, and cleanliness is unbeatable. While the breakfast was a touch overpriced at $22AUD/EA, it was a buffet and understandable that it would be more expensive. The room was clean, the aircon worked, and the hotel was quiet at night.

Worst part: you have to pay for Wi-Fi. It is 10dollars for 2 hours. Worse, 3G is not working only when I enter my room. 3G works outside but not in the room. This is weird. I thought maybe this hotel is blocking 3G to earn money? The hotel staff is not helpful about this. Furthermore, When I first came in, there were hairs on toilet floor. If you look closely on the tables inside the room, you can see dusts too. The room is not cleaned very clearly. Is this really a hotel? Also, water from the shower tub is very weak. The room is old and not that clean. To be honest, ive been to four hotels in Aus, and this one is the worst. My memories from Sydney is ruined due to this hotel. Give me free Wi-Fi or give me rooms that allow 3G.

Great location, but not sure how this qualifies as a 4 star hotel. I have stayed in hostels with better equipped rooms.

I would not rate the hotel at 4 stars, I come from SA where our hotels that are rated at 4 stars are that, the staff at times were unhelpful and did not know too much about what was happening in sydney and the services that NSW had. My hotel room stank, and a few times the TV did not work, nor was the restaurant appealing, too much noise from surrounding rooms, lifts sometimes did not work and I would not stay again!

Recently stayed here for a convention. It was nice and quite. Relatively cheap and the food for breakfast was great. It was in an easy location and made it super easy for me to attend university. The place did have some bizarre trip hazards on certain floors though. Multiple changes in carpet length that caught my and my Nanna up a few times.

Very reasonably priced drinks and a lower music volume make this a place to go when you want to just relax. It's a good place to go to avoid the lines and drama of Scubar. The food is really tasty and priced really well compared to other pubs and the locations surrounding. Definitely a good place to go to start the night, or unwind from a crazy night.

Close to central and George St buses this is the perfect location to meet up with friends from in and out of town! The bar out front is the perfect place to kick off the evening with a wide range of beers and drinks. The bistro is basic, but the food servings are generous and really well priced with burgers and chips from $10.00. I had the lamb burger with guacamole and chips on the side, nothing spectacular but highly edible! With no pressure from staff, we enjoyed a great night. The only improvement would be the ability to order from the bistro window instead of having to battle back to the bar! Worth consideration for a cheap get together.

The Great Southern Bar had the best atmosphere of anywhere I have been in Sydney, everyone including their bartenders were having a great time. Would definitely recommend.

I stayed in a standard queen room for 1 night in September 2012. Cost $100. On arrival they ask for a $50 deposit which is refundable on departure. The room was quite small, the LCD TV reception was lousy, bathroom was fine but the hair dryer attachment was broken. The room and bed were clean. Had a wardrobe with ironing board and iron. The small bar fridge in room which made a little bit of noise during the night. The 4 star rating is questionable but no huge negatives. I wouldn't pay more than $100 per night.

Nice welcome in this hotel very nice and very comfortable. Room with fridge and air conditioning. Internet available via Ethernet but paying. $10 for 2h. Great location right in the center of Sydney.
