Howard Johnson by Wyndham Appleton

DO NOT STAY HERE, I REPEAT, DO NOT STAY HERE! Regardless of the pricing. The staff are rude, entitled and mean. They double charge you and lie that they didn't see your online pre-payment booking. The whole hotel stinks and smell like piss and cigarettes, even though all rooms were no smoking. The room I had, there was a hole, not even vacuum and the bed sheets were dirty and had nasty spots and markings. We asked for more pillows and bed sheets, got the bed sheets but they didn't even put it on for us, we as the GUEST had to do it. The pillows, we never got after 30mins. The TV didn't even have a remote, the mini fridge and microwave was so dirty too. The whole hotel sucked. My nose became stuffy and my allergies were worst inside this hotel than outside. I was there for an hour or two and decided to cancel because of the experience and because of the double charge. I've used a third party pre booking for all my stays and never been double charged. BUT SOMEHOW THIS HOTEL CHARGED ME, PLUS A 75 DOLLAR DEPOSIT FOR A DIRTY HOTEL ALREADY!? Yeah… 75 DOLLARS! And then I went to book a new hotel through my third party app and everything went smoothly and fine, no double charge and no 75 dollar deposit. Greedy howard johnson appleton hotel. I've been in hotels that were 100 times nicer and the deposit was 25 dollars only. This hotel is a scam and greedy, with rude staffs that had attitude problems.

The rooms were dirty there was hair in the mini fridge and “hair” in the tub the walls were dripping with filth a mysterious white splatter on the wall near the lamp but the room was only $60 so what more could you expect what made me upset was the fact that there wasn’t any breakfast after they let us know they would be serving breakfast 6-9 am and there was nothing. Terrible stay.

A month and a half ago, I reserved a hotel room for two nights for this weekend at the Howard Johnson by Wyndham in Appleton through their own website so that my son and I had a place to stay during his soccer tournament. I received an email from the hotel asking me to pre register/check-in in advance online. I did and provided my credit card, drivers license, vehicle info & arrival time. After doing that, I received another email thanking me for cancelling my reservation. What?!? I did no such thing! We needed that room and I had planned for it in advance but the hotel cancelled it last minute and provided no explanation! The cancellation email directed me to contact the hotel but when I spoke with the front desk, they told me that they could not help me and that I needed to call Wyndham which I did, but customer service at Wyndham said I needed to call the Howard Johnson hotel. Neither business offered any help or resolution. I am appalled by the Howard Johnson by Wyndham's horrendous customer service and cavalier attitude toward cancelling a reservation I was depending on! I recommend you take your business ANYWHERE else!

Hallways smelled like cigarettes, so did my bathroom. Clearly many people smoked in the bathroom with the fan on due to the amount of tar on the vent and surrounding ceiling. Plus, the fan was broken so when the bathroom inevitably steamed up from the shower the smell was even worse. Mold on the shower curtain too, the bottom 3 inches, one side to the other. Front desk was nice enough on the surface, but they didn't return my deposit and ignored me when I tried to call over 10 times to ask for a refund. Had to work with my bank for 2 days to get a chargeback on my card. They claim it's for incidentals such as valet, room service, beverages, and Wi-Fi. However, Wi-Fi is listed as a free service on their website, so the only reason I got my money back is because of false advertising. Will never stay again, I recommend steering totally clear. Your bank might not be as willing to help you as mine was, and you'll leave spending 75 more dollars than you wanted. Use the extra money to stay somewhere else and still have something left in your pocket. Next stop, BBB complaint 👍

I made a reservation for my wife and daughter. They were coming into town late and had to go directly the event they were attending. My wife left a message saying that she would be late, and I called the front desk and confirmed that it didn't matter when they checked in. But when they came to the hotel, they found out that their reservation had been canceled and that there were no vacancies. Never go here.

The new staff don't deliver your mail. Coffee is always cold! The pool is permanently out of order! There is mold in the room! To get clean sheets and towels you have to wait up to 7 days! No smoke detectors in the rooms!

The previous owners were good people, it recently switched over to new owners (same owners as Motel 6). Let’s just say at the very least they’re high rude, especially the older lady who works at the desk. Don’t go there if you’re in town visiting anyone no guest after 730. Let’s also mention the mold, the constant sewage smell in the hallway, cat pee, dog pee smells. No breakfast really, no pool, rooms are nasty. Also you’ll be greeted by extra critter crawler guest. Yes they have roaches & more, should be shut down!

Place is not reccomended. Pictures are very misleading and are edited. The hotel actually looks run down and is not well taken care of. Very very strong marijuana and mold scent in lobby and hallways, smell even seeped into our room. Some guests here seem like they live here and are always smoking. Room itself is not as bad, but when we got into our room, there was some trash still left in the bin. Bathtub has some mold so not sure how well they cleaned the rooms over the years. The next day they did fix but more like mask the odors in the hallways with plug in wall scents. Overall, a 1 star rating.

I made my reservation online. I even called 2 days before to verify my reservation. We ended up arriving later than I wanted (8 pm) to find out the room I had reserved had been given to another person. Thankfully it was my sister traveling with me and she was ok sharing a bed. Also, hotels/motels went smoke free a very long time ago, but you can still smell the nasty lingering smell.

I went to Appleton to enjoy a weekend. I will not stay at this Howard Johnson again. The staff was nice but rarely seen. The continental breakfast was a sick joke. I've never seen a breakfast room so dirty, coffee pots disgusting. What cereal they had was stale fruit loops, NO butter for waffles, NO milk for cereal. Waffle batter dripping all over the cabinets, which you could clearly see that the batter has been there for months if not years. Drug deals going down in the parking lot, homeless people camped out behind the hotel. This is the 2nd worst hotel that I have ever seen. The prices are not worth your safety or tour life.

Although this hotel is value-priced, I still do not believe that the dirty conditions were worth the rate. Rooms and bedding were dirty. Linens had cigarette burns and stains in them. Corridors smell like marijuana and indian food. The parking lot is full of drug dealers, homeless people, and other unsavory types. I found a sharp knife just laying in the parking lot. Service was meh. The lobby was just kind of very oddly decorated and had a TV blasting loudly. Breakfast was horrendous and disgusting. I stayed just one night and was fine, but did not generally feel comfortable. I would definitely have canceled the rest of my reservation if I had booked more than one night.

Positive: Breakfast was included, different colors on the walls Negative: The hotel can work on being more cleaner.

-Broken window in lobby.
-2 cereals, raisin Bran was totally empty and people complained that the fruit loops tasted stale.
-Highly unsanitary setup for Continental breakfast with shared gallon jug of milk on counter, and bottle of orange juice for people to share, where everyone can get their fingers/hands all over the nozzle/mouth (instead of individual containers or a juice dispenser).
-Hot coffee remaining in Bunn pot (nstead of being transferred to carafe so it wouldn't burn, like most mo/hotels do).

We checked in for a weekend stay, while Mile of Music was going on. The outside is brightly colored in Orange, Blue, and Whites, their is one of the many Winged Lions around Appleton at the front door. The gentleman that checked us in was kind. However upon arrival towards our room, is when I started noticing that maybe this hotel is not all that it seems. There is a strong oder of Incesnse and Weed, The floors in the hallway and stair wells are dirty, The vending machines have signs posted "Use at your own risk. " The Hotel states it has Wi-Fi, and that the password is welcome in all lower case. However when you try to sign it, you are alerted that the buildings Wi-Fi is not safe and even when you accept that, the internet doesnt even work. In our room, while it looks nice, alot of the unseens are hidden, the air conditioner is extremely dirty, it barely works, we found a Cockroach by the TV stand garbage, beetles were in the bathroom, in the fridge, there was mold in the soda holders, and they have permanent residents that seem to yell and scream from their own rooms. When I went outside I found the security doors able to be freely used as though they were left open on purpose, The pool is advertised online as being there. However the hotel owners use it for their own personal storage, bicycles, furniture, boxes liter the once pool rec room. It may be cheap however this hotel should no longer be a Wydhem Brand Howard Johnson as it doesnt even meet the two star requirements.

Terrible. Do not stay here. We had booked this hotel for a company event with 7 employees. When our first employee arrived, the female Uber driver told her that she could stay at her house rather than this dump. The room smelled of urine, the door and window lock didn't work, fire alarm was damaged, blood stains on the comforter, and people fighting in the hallways. Homeless people all around the building, and what looked like a drugged up guy in the lobby. We quickly booked a different place and took her out of the room. They even tried to double charged us an extra $1600 and when confronted, they said to file a dispute. You've been warned (also, plenty of other reviews that share the same).

Avoid This Hotel – Unacceptable Conditions and Service.
I strongly urge fellow travelers not to stay at this hotel.
From the moment we entered, we were greeted by an overwhelming odor of cigarette smoke, soggy carpets, and swarms of flies and gnats — all clear signs of poor cleanliness and neglect including very shabby curb appeal and landscaping. Despite paying $210 per night during the Oshkosh airshow, we received no breakfast, no fresh towels, no housekeeping, and essentially no service whatsoever. The front desk staff were often absent or intentionally avoiding guests, making it nearly impossible to get assistance.
The breakfast area, if you can call it that, was appalling: expired milk creamers, filthy coffee pots, cheap low-quality food, and dangerously low refrigeration temperatures that would likely violate health codes. Management showed zero accountability or concern, instead shifting blame onto guests for choosing an “affordable” hotel — despite charging premium rates during a high-demand event.
This was not just disappointing — it was unsanitary and unacceptable. If you value cleanliness, service, or even basic hospitality, I highly recommend you look elsewhere.
Shame on this management and brand Howard Johnson for operating under such substandard conditions without remorse.

I am a Wyndham hotel rewards member, so I stay at a lot of Wyndham's. This place was by far the worst stay I've ever had anywhere! First off, although they showed me the disclaimer later, the pool was closed. Website says for Maintenance, if you don't miss the small warning, however it's been closed since covid according to the sign on the door. The room smelled so bad I opened the windows immediately and never closed it. The shower was disgusting and had hair all over the place inside it. The toilet seat had poo stains on it and leaked everything we flushed it. Beds had stains on them… just horrible! I was so tempted to lose my money and just leave! If I'm not compensated something back from my stay I will never go to another wyndham again. Also, if I could I would post the pictures I have.
