Had a great stay in Byoona Amagara. We loved the open room with 'outdoor' vibes and amazing views on Lake Bunyonyi. Great vegetarian food at fair prices. Big fan of the eco-friendly concept. Fun to rent a canoe and paddle around the island. Big shout-out to Clinton!

Avoid this place. They'll claim to be supporting the locals on the island but they do so dishonestly.
The scenery was nice and the food was ok but expensive compared to Ugandan prices. The hotel will only compare their prices to USD.
DO NOT TAKE THE BOAT TOUR!
We were quoted 150, 000UGX for a group of four. What we weren't told was there was a charge of 120, 000UGX for the guide. Effectively this doubled the price of the tour. We felt this should have been conveyed to us. When we want to speak to the owner about this, he simply snickered at us. The boat tour is mostly a hard hike up a steep mountain. This is something I wasn't aware of as the guide only replies it's a "20 minutes away". No one tells you hiking is part of the tour! I wanted to support them going forward but after this experience l'm going to reconsider. Such a shame. They would have received more funds for their programs than they swindled us for.

Amazing location. Restaurant is overpriced in my opinion. Overcharge for boat and\or canoe rides to and from island. Although they do offer a free service once a day (which they may be hesitant to provide and tell you about). Overall beautiful and worthwhile if you would like to stay on an island on the lake.

This place is amazing! the staff was super lovely and the food amazing — so many veggie options. The island is not too far to reach from the mainland and they even have a free boat once a day. The areal is big and peaceful. The place is run sustainable and the money goes to the community.

I truly love that place, everything was amazing! It's in the jungle but open tent you have amazing nature views and eco lodges and the food was amazing, the community was cute with school.

Just spent a few days at Byoona Amagara Island Retreat, and wow—what an amazing place! The views of Lake Bunyonyi are out of this world, and the whole vibe is so peaceful and relaxing. The cottages are super cozy, and you really feel connected to nature. Plus, the staff were all so friendly and made us feel at home.
The food? Absolutely delicious! Fresh, local, and full of flavor. There’s so much to do too—kayaking, swimming, or just chilling by the lake. Honestly, it’s the perfect getaway if you need to unwind and recharge. Highly recommend this hidden gem!

The place was too nice, clean with good furniture and nice services wow🤗. I would recommend one to try it out coz it's One of the nicest place u would ever try out trust me. Can't wait to revisit it again and again 💯📍. Woowww. I can't tell it all but when it comes to the night view the nice 🕯️ at night 💋 they are so nice 👍.

I loved the place a lot! Good food, location, dorms, and they run some things sustainable. Cheap canoe renting, sich is fun.
Good to hang out for some days. I personally would recommend also trying the other restaurants on the island, the one on the Retreat is middle price range compared to the others:)

We slept in the dorm room for 4 nights and absolutely loved our stay at this little island retreat. Amazing views, everything put together with a lot of detail, super friendly staff, great food and just a quiet place to calm yourself down and enjoy life. Would come again!

We booked the family cottage this place for 2 nights, evening of our first day, I was looking for other places to stay at.
The cottage room itself was in despicable state — extremely dirty/dusty and infested with mosquitos, ants and spiders. I used up about half of a large can of mosquito spray just to temporarily reduce the number of bugs.
We had some quick dinner at the restaurant, which was okay. When we got back to our room, there were once again, as many bugs in the room.
Somehow we managed to get the kids into bed and crashed ourselves. In the morning, we booked another property, and got out of this place as quickly as we could.

I can not speak more highly about Byoona Amagara. I have been coming here since 2016 and it is this little piece of heaven. This is the best place to experience Lake Bunyonyi as it is isolated from the rest of the big hotels. As it is on an island, there are no sounds of cars or people. At night, I can see four small lights from the village across the lake, otherwise it is quiet and dark and you can see the stars. You have the most amazing serene view of the lake from your outdoor shower which is heated by solar panels. The hotel is owned by the community and any profits go to programs in the community. They have not raised any of their prices since 2016 so it is a great deal. And they are every conscious about the environment: they refuse to use a generator to avoid use of gasoline, they have free filtered water to avoid plastic bottles and they discourage tourists from going to unsustainable activities such as the island with zebras (this is not their natural habitat and a zebra has died from the stress of being on this small island). The food here is also very good. Anything with crayfish is good. Try the Byoona paradise. The deluxe geodomes are worth the extra price, but even if they are not available, you will have a great experience in the regular geodomes.

I enjoyed my 4 nights here. The view of the lake is beautiful. I recommend the gorilla tour with Andrew. Arrangements can be booked through Byoona. A couple things to note — the huts have an open wall overlooking the lake so know that it is not fully enclosed. The toilets are on a different level, you will need to go up or down a staircase. I preferred the shared toilet dome because I liked the smaller, more intimate, lodging. Food was really good and there were vegetarian options. I recommend booking directly with the hotel or on arrival because Booking. Com costs much more. Another tip is to book last minute on Booking. Com because usually there is free cancellation. That way, you could cancel the Booking reservation when you arrive and pay the hotel directly.

Byoona amagara island retreat is an awesome place to stay in lake bunyonyi the geodome and dormitory are well located in the property to have view of the lake bunyonyi the parking place is located inside supreme adventure parking space and you need to pay a parking fee canopy will cost you 10000k it will take 35 to 40 minutes to reach the resort and fast boat are charged 30000k the resort is located in a small island so you can have a walk around it they got a swimming dock and playground when I was staying in the dormitory I was the only one if if you love nature quite and birds sounds then this is the one.

Dorms and Geo-dome are amazing. Very peaceful and quiet location. Free uganda tea and drinking water. Staff is really helpful. Non existent Wi-Fi. Charging only at the reception. Food is prepared fresh and is delicious.

This was my favorite place in Uganda. I was here for 5 nights with my boyfriend and friends. The location on Itambira Island is peaceful and stunning, full of bird life. We stayed in a geodome which was really cool! prices are fair and all profits go to the local community and schools. Staff here was very friendly. The food was great. Even met some of the local community which was really special. There is a woman on the island that is 103 and it was unique to hear her stories. 100% recommend this place.
