Lovely. Quaint hotel. Peaceful despite being on a small roundabout. Enjoyed my stay very much at a very affordable price.

For the money you pay to stay a night, I would expect more. The room was quite dirty, with lots of old filth from many people staying through the years. The bed was not comfortable at all, and the duvet and pillows so synthetic they clung to you in a sweaty mess. The dinner meal (fish pie mains) was the lowest quality mass-produced pub-food I've had yet, and the breakfast incredibly generic and boring. I tried ordering porridge, thinking that couldn't go wrong, but it was literally inedible. It had the consistency of hot glue, and no taste to it. Oh, and no oats to be seen. I wouldn't go here unless I needed to, which ultimately was why I was there to begin with.

Quiet and homely. Room exceptionally clean and very comfortable bed! Decor a bit tired but I don't find an issue. Nice breakfast facilities. Staff very pleasant and efficient.

Quite expensive for what it is. Rooms are comfy and the staff friendly. Breakfast was rushed and a bit disappointing.

A little dissapointing. Food not as tasty and lots of dishes missing from menu. Service a bit sloppy but it's a pub and good for locals.

First time to come here for lunch, food is okay, plenty of options on their menu, reasonably priced as well. Only negative are the staff. They’re very grumpy and unpleasant. They looked like they can’t be bothered to do their job. We kept seeking them out and found them chatting in the bar. It is not busy that time, only few people in the restaurant but you don’t even see them. Not impress, and definitely not coming back here again.

Small but very comfy room was told we would have a bath instead got a shower but apart from that great stay.

Lovely place. Great food. Friendly staff. Some of the other reviews complain about food service being staggered. We were a large party and the service was staggered. It didn't come all at once. This didn't bother us though and we had a great time. I'm guessing that the kitchen is small and that's why they have to stagger service.

Rooms were clean and beds were really comfy. Sounded like the people in the room above us were practising ball room dancing for a couple of hours on our final morning, no fault of the hotel though. Let's hope they got gold.

Don't think of this as an idyllic country pub serving fresh seasonal food: it's part of a small chain offering an uninspired menu of mostly frozen and/or reheated food. Gravy on a Sunday roast is of the Bisto gravy granule variety; there are no specials; the wait can be long and unrewarding. It's the sort of place that when busy, the staff don't look you in the eye when they ask if everything's okay, they just don't have the time and don't really want to know. I come here maybe once every six months on the hope that it's improved, but over the last two years it's progressively gone downhill. There are many better local options for a relaxing meal with family and friends. At present The Chequers feels like it needs new ownership from someone who's inspired and open to changing a tired formula that's just about going through the motions. It's such a shame, it's got great potential.

Room 9 has damp, no heating was on, the bath has no rail and mould and dirty, dirty carpet, a noise that kept going on and off, no roast potatoes for dinner. However nice breakfast and Quorn sausages were lovely. The views are lovely early in the morning. Hard to get there on a Sunday without a car and I recommend using the next stop instead even though a bit further. Walked from Cooper's Green bus stop and had to use torch, so dark. The footpath to the Chequers isn't lit a shame!

Usually a good experience but not this time. Seemed to be new staff. Waited forty five minutes after being seated to have our orders taken, the waitress saying we must have snook in unseen! … The waiter then tipped my wife's dinner all over the seat and her! The food was good though which saves this from being a one star review. After waiting another 20 minutes for somebody to ask for the bill we went to the bar to find everybody having a drink. Hey ho. Think we'll go somewhere else next time.

Well they're certainly not stingy with the food, then combine that with the quality and you have a winning combination. See you soon.

This is a charming English hotel with a restaruant and bar. The room I am in has no frills and is a bit bare, however the restaruant and grounds make up for it. There are stairs for most of the rooms with no elevator so it may be a challenge for some people to get to and from the room. The breakfast (hot) is amazing. The prices are very reasonable. I would stay here again.

Comfortable bed, spacious clean room with bath and shower. The best fillet steak I've ever had! Wonderful welcoming staff, felt at home.

We had a very nice 2 night stay at the Chequers. The bed was comfortable and the ensuite had a bath as well as a shower and was very spacious. There was a good choice of food for breakfast, and the evening meal we had was good too. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially Andrew. There was an interesting old well in the reception area and a mural of Ashdown Forest with characters from Winnie the Pooh on one of the dining room walls — Ashdown Forest is nearby. We would definitely stay again.

The staff were all helpful and smiling. The room was comfortable with tea and coffee. The blinds needed attention and the main light in thee en suite didn't work nut this really didn't detract. The food was extremely good at dinner and breakfast. Their beer was well kept. Maresfield is really convenient for Ashdown Forest.

Very nice staff that made us feel welcome. The breakfasts are really nice with a good selection to set you up for the day. Rooms were clean and conformable with everything you need including hairdryer and iron! We had mostly good food and had a problem with one meal that had been overcooked, that was a shame hence the 4 stars instead of five. The gardens were nice to sit out in and area peaceful for a relaxing escape. Would recommend,

A Sunday lunch for family and relatives from Australia. We all had different items from menu and we're amazed at size of Yorkshires. They were even willing to serve a child's roast for an adult with small apetite. All meals were excellent but staff a little slow on returning to take coffee orders. Overall an excellent experience.

Awesome room, friendly staff and great food.

The food was fantastic. However. The service was dire. There was dirty cutlery on the table. The servers were grumpy and unhelpful. When I aed for something to be removed from my food as I was allergic, she didn't even bother and I had to wait for new food to be brought out. We were left waiting for our order to be taken and when we asked she just walked off and didn't bother. As a waitress myself I know there are loads of reasons to be late. But there is no excuse for rudeness.

Good food. Good beer. Friendly staff.

Excellent fine dining and attentive staff. Just make sure you're booked into a restaurant room and not the new extension — feel very left out there.

Having had my expectations raised based on the celebrity status of this restaurant, I was sadly let down by the service a. D food.

Beautiful and relaxed interiors, food very good, although service is very poor. We have eaten twice in the past month and both times front of house seems amateur. Will try again, hopefully staff will receive more training. Food is good but staff, although helpful, below average. Our champagne exploded as poored, due to being warm. A glass of wine dropped over one of our party. Bread handed to us and told to pass round. A friend had organised a bottle of wine for the table, waitress just said, wine pre ordered and glasses on table, no mention of who it was from! I think too many waiting staff, unorganised and all trying to wait on the same tables. We were given our menu's, and within five seconds another waitress passing by asked if we were ready to order.

First of all, I would say the rooms were about average for the price we paid. My colleague didn't have a remote for his TV (room 8) and the bathroom blind was broken in my room, and the sink was loosely attached to the wall. (Room 9). The kettle worked, and there was plenty of milk and teabags provided. Wireless internet was free and fast. My colleague and I stayed here for 1 night, had a nice evening meal in the restaurant and a couple of drinks. There was only the two of us staying in the hotel (possibly a warning sign? ). Before retiring for the evening, we asked what time breakfast was and were told 7.30-9am, as our meeting 2 miles away was not until 11.30am, we said we would be down at 9. The landlord seemed happy with this and even commented as it meant he could have a lie in. In the morning, we went down at 9am, to be told by the lady behind the bar we had missed breakfast, after a discussion, she then agreed to make breakfast (storming into the kitchen and slamming the door). At this point we transferred our bags to the car. While walking back in, we saw the lady who had just agreed to cook getting into her car and leaving the car park in a big shower of gravel. On returning to reception, the man from behind the bar, who we had made the arrangement with the previous evening with then informed us that breakfast would not be available after all, and presented us with our bill.

Where do I start: Shabby rooms — poor service — no toilet paper — beds not made — wireless internet did not work — Fire door in coach house annex illegal — PAT testing out of date by years — When I complained to the manager I was told to "Pay up and leave immediately". We had a block booking as part of a family wedding party and without us they would have been nearly empty. I did not consider "Well you can see how busy we are" as an excuse! I CERTAINLY WILL NOT RECOMEND this hotel.
