Company booked a room for a night. To be honest this was the worst experience I had with a hotel. When you get into the reception, everything looks nice and posh. The problems begin when you head to your room through the corridors. Everything is falling apart, not maintained, everywhere you look, you can see something wrong (missing stairs antislip edge, lights waiting to drop down, broken doors, bad smell). When arrived into the room — same problem — lights not working, sink tap incomplete, mould on the windows etc. When having the breakfast in the morning, a piece of the table came loose and my tea jumped into the air straight on the chair in front of me. If someone was sitting there, they would have been burnt. Will not go back there and would not recommend to anyone. They need to do a proper refurbishment.

Spent 1 night here with my fiance. Room and all areas were spotless. Staff were extremely helpful. Would definitely stay again. Thank you.

Got into hotel after 9:30pm due to delayed train. They had stopped serving hot food. Getting to my room carrying more than one bag wasn't easy as there are no lifts and it's a bit of a Labyrinth. Rooms were big though. Lots of storage and nice big bathrooms. Breakfast was decent. Staff very friendly. I would rather stay at the holiday Inn next time I am down for work though.

Showing signs of tiredness and in need of some TLC. Nothing majorly off-putting but lots of little things that need putting right. Located alongside a very active main road makes it unsuitable for an un-interrupted sleep. Windows all need replacing. Staff very friendly and try hard to please. Not the hotel it once was but hoping to see it sparkle once more.

Very nice rooms and a good venue. Nice modern bathroom. What you would expect for a hotel in this price range.

Leisure centre had sauna and steam room that don't work. Swimming pool was fine though. Bedroom had blood stains on sheet, broken locks on door to bedroom, bathroom tap had no handle. Breakfast had v cheap sausages, burnt on one side and uncooked on other. Plenty of negatives and the hotel has plenty of bits that need work. Overall though the room was quiet and I'm always pleased when hotels have pools so I'll give it 2 stars.

Almost all rooms have issues, checking in late has issues, bar staff weekdays have issues. 2 star because receiptoists and breakfast are making up for an extra one.

Had dinner with friends and it was really nice. We all had Aberdeen Angus beef burger which was delicious with chips and salad. For desert two of us had blueberry cheesecake and two had chocolate sundae.

Good first impression, clean well maintained, friendly and helpful staff. Parking bays are narrow. Good disabled access and facilities.

Stayed here en route up North Tuesday night. Got there late evening and the lady on the check-in desk was very friendly. I didn't really see much of downstairs but the way up to the room and the room left a lot to be desired to be honest with you. The coldest night of the year so far and I get the room with the radiator that didn't work and the minuscule oil filled radiator that wasn't turned on. There was a maintenance sticker on the radiator saying it didn't work so someone knew about it. I did mention it on check-out the next morning. The bed wasn't the most comfortable and, to be fair, everything looked aged and tired. The bathroom was OK, the shower was good and there were sufficient towels (although, again they looked a bit aged. ) This is the second Mercure hotel I have stayed at and, to be fair, will be my last as the other one fell short of what I would have expected regardless of the price charged!

Well, not much to say about the hotel itself. The staff was very friendly and helpful, but the rooms were not that good… Our first room was leaking water from the ceeling. The staff immediately arrange us 2 different rooms. The second room had the heater broken and they had to there to turn it off. The rooms aren't insulated at all. I spend all night hearing the exhaust fan, which is very annoying and some other guest taking…

Nice clean but couldn't get Wi-Fi to work (I work in IT) and had to wait ages to get drinks as the only person on call was doing a security round. I'd go back again but just a couple of small niggles plus no AC.

Literally the dirtiest hotel ive ever stayed in. Stayed for 1 night and it was disgusting. Caused chaos with my asthma, found old food under bed, dirty tissues. Stained mattresses with crumbs on. Dust thick enough to write in. Wouldnt stay here again if you paid me. Came home with loads of bites on my legs. I cant categorically say what caused them but I could hazard a guess. Avoid!

Went here for our works Xmas party and was lovely food was nice the staff were quick with getting all the food out and nothing was to much to ask they were all very helpful had a lovely night.

Surprised at how nice this hotel is. Staff are very good. Polite can do enough for you Large rooms. Great bar areas. Pool Overall very nice hotel.

Nice cozy place with a small fitness room with a treadmill, bike and steps machine. Nothing fancy though. Nice swimming pool. Keep in mind it's an unmanned fitness centre and you get an access code from reception. There is a also a steam room which I didn't use. Overall it's OK. If you're not looking for something major then will do the job. Rooms are a bit outdated but again depends what room you get the mattress can be from very good to below medium. I think they are updating/upgrading as they go. Restaurant wise the food is very good. Avoid ordering goods stuff that you would find frozen at the supermarkets since some of them are! And they aren't always cooked properly. Kitchen is also a bit slow. Been there for a week and the average serve time was 40 mins for a main course and nothing else. Keep that in mind when you are in a hurry! Overall what you pay is what you get. Not the high standard Mercure Hotel you would expect but it does the trick every now and then when you want a quite room away from Birmingham!

Too expensive for what it offers.

Exceptional Hotel. Spacious and comfortable room. Wifi and parking. A little expensive but in the end it is worth it.

Good location, room was spacious although could have done with some cleaner sheets. Service was good, was granted an extra Wi-Fi login.

The health suite is small and a little run down but is great if you want to keep fit, swim and relax in quiet surroundings. Basic gym equipment 2 treadmills a cross trainer, rowing and cycle type machines in a very small air conditioned space. Pool is warm! Sauna and steam room both effective but again quite small.

Good value, but you get what you pay for. The corridors were in need of new carpet, but the room was nice and modern and spacious. It was a warm night and no air-conditioning meant the room was a sauna, plus the windows opened onto the very loud, busy main road. Breakfast was so-so. The staff were really, really good, particularly the lady on reception. I probably wouldn't stay again except in a pinch, but that's mainly down to the location/neighborhood.

Very good hotel. Nice room, clean, quiet. Dinner was good. Hopefully breakfast will also.

Between two Stools. Is it a modern or classic look they want? Both is not good. Rooms need a theme and the decorating finishing.

We had our wedding reception here on the 4th August 2017. We were blown away, from the minute we arrived till the time we went home everything was perfection. The staff were amazing, the room was amazing, the food was amazing. I can not praise this hotel up enough. Thank you The Goldthorn Hotel for making our day so special. Lynden and Charlotte.

Made a booking by mistake having read the disappointing reviews we were very pleasantly surprised how nice the hotel was. The staff were very helpful and polite. Our room was very clean. Breakfast was really good. Couldn't ask for better. The decor was nice. Bathroom was also very good. I'm not sure what people expect but our stay was a very enjoyable experience. Will gladly stay there again.

Comfortable warming stay. Decor is a bit outdated and floors are a bit spongy and squeaky. Rooms are kept clean and fresh.

Writing this review whilst waiting at the bar — minimum 10 minute wait every time. The rest of the hotel reminds me of Fawlty Towers. Utter rubbish.

Very average stay. Had to change rooms at first as the I would of had to sit down to have a shower. Second room I got was as hot as a sauna and had no ho water in the shower. Breakfast was nice buffet option and staff very friendly. Would go back again if the heating and water temperature is sorted.

We spent the past weekend here. Initially we were unsure of what it'd be like, as we rarely stay at any place not part of a big chain (like Premier Inn, Ramada, etc), but this doubt was quickly put to rest. The room we had was a great size, elegantly decorated and with very comfortable beds. The bathroom was also large, with separate bath and shower units, and a marble finishing that made it feel very premium. Note: we stayed in the 'business centre' building, which I believe is different in decor to the rest of the hotel. Breakfast was included with our rate — I think on most days you can order a la carte from the menu (their Eggs Benedict were very well cooked), but on Sunday they had put out a buffet style hot breakfast. You also have access to a continental buffet, I especially enjoyed the wealth of healthy options (as well as fruit, you can get seeds, nuts). The staff were also friendly and always happy to help. The swimming pool facility wasn't great — I think there was an issue with the heater when I stayed that meant the pool was cold — but it's a good facility to have nonetheless.

Groupon people be aware. Not worth £17 when nothing ever stays working. Hang around outside and ask the local users who are very very dissapointed! Changing rooms: one toilet thats it. Rusted lockers. Water logged floor, Extremly poor hygiene Swimming Pool: Suppose to be a leasure pool. Its freezing. Colder than local council pool Sauna: Hardly works. Switched on and off frequently to save money. Steam room: Normally out of order.

Rooms are small and simple but clean and staff are friendly.

Staff and facilities are very good especially Lisa who looked after me all week (thanks so much! ). A terrible shame the chef is hopeless!

Arrived for a three night stay with a coach tour. Despite early notification of mobility problems we were put at the other end of the coach/car park in an annexe with no less than three sets of steps, up and down which I had to hoist my husband's rollator/walker to get to our rather dark room. Promises of a more suitable one failed to materialise. There is no lift in the hotel and some steps into every room. Even the poor maids have to carry bedding, cleaning materials and towels up and down many flights. Definitely not suitable for the elderly which is what most coach tours consist of. Ok for overnight stays for businessmen perhaps if all you need is a bed, a bar and a good breakfast. The food was school dinner type except the breakfast which was good and the staff were hard working, friendly and battling against great odds.

Just had a great all inclusive weekend break. Great time made better by the excellent staff at the hotel especially Faith, Cliff and Lisa. They were all brilliant helping us all weekend. Would recommend this hotel thanks mainly to the hard work and friendliness of the staff. Food was delicious as always at mercure hotels.

Nice for a stop over for a night Rooms are ok. Reception area and bar area are top.
