It was our first time visiting with friends and we will certainly be coming back. The food was amazing, the staff were extremely welcoming and attentive. There’s a beautiful atmosphere in a stunning building with open fires. If there’s one little downside, we booked weeks in advance and without being told on booking it was full or to be given an option, we were told our table was in the bar. It was a disappointment, especially as we were there for a special occasion. However it was still lovely and hasn’t stopped us from recommending to others.

The Finches needs a friendly front of house, the manager is shocking. He makes you feel most unwelcome and that your an inconvenience. All younger staff are very professional and friendly. Lovely pub and restaurant.

Staff (apart from the young waiting on staff, Who were all lovely) attitudes are awful and real lack of customer service. As guests at the hotel we were made to feel like an inconvenience. Sounds like a number of the toilets need a plumber to look at them too. The receptionist on Saturday could do with improving her attitude. Condescending would be polite phrase to use for her. At least the food was good, although breakfast a little disappointing. The hotel is in a beautiful setting but is overpriced and not worth the money. Trip advisor reviews seem to say same re staff, and these comments are not being heeded.

Lovely food, great service, staff all very pleasant and welcoming and social distancing measures, etc all in place.

Our first visit for lunch. My husband and I had the two course lunch menu which was fantastic food for the price. We ate in the bar however the restaurant is stunning and there is a great outdoor space with fabulous views. Staff were very attentive and helpful. We will definitely return.

We had our wedding lunch here. It was excellent. Staff couldn't have done more for us and kept asking if they could help with anything else on run up to meal. Food was excellent and enjoyed by everyone. We will definitely be back. Thank you so much for making our day perfect.

Terrible coffee despite assuring me they had a decent coffee machine. Sent the first one back that was coloured water. This is the second.

Staff are so friendly the food was excellent, the chocolate brownie is to die for. The pub/restaurant is lovely and the views from the garden are beautiful, would definitely recommend.

This was a great stop for lunch when visiting the lakes. It's a up market pub but a lovely place. It has a great restaurant and pub with garden. We had the set menu which was very well priced and supebly cooked. Staff were great too.

Mum and Dads 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary. 28 guests. Excellent food, exemplary staff and lovely ambience. Particular shout out to the young lad who was helping serve tables. Beautiful country pub, restaurant and b&b. Amazing views across Rutland Water. Food and drink is a little steep, but apart from that excellent.

Nice place to stop for a drink on our bike ride, I asked the gentleman in the restaurant what time they served food till and he replied 7.30 this was a Sunday, I thanked him and replied we will probably return when we are finished and he said that was fine a table would be available. However someone else from our party asked for a menu from someone else and was told that none were available and they wasn’t excepting anymore walk ins today as too busy (have to say when we left plenty of tables were free and laid) felt a bit like we wasn’t welcome so did not return, sale lost for you am afraid perhaps you shouldn’t judge.

What a wonderful place the The Finch's Arms is, excellent food, service and atmosphere. I highly recommend! We sat outside on a glorious day with our border collie and were looked after perfectly. Thank you staff.

Excellent food and drinks friendly staff and comfortable seats car park busy but walk there it's very easy special board well worth the look.

Waited 5 minutes at the bar just to ask if we could bring the dogs in. Waited another 5 minutes to then get menus.
Whilst the chap serving was apologetic, he did nothing to ask for help and nobody from the management team seemed to be bothered about the 5 people queuing.
Eventually after getting a menu we’d waited another 5 minutes at the bar to try and get a drink… enough was enough and we left without ordering.

Good Sunday lunch a little on the expensive side but a pleasant homely place.

Top place to visit, good location and good food. Internally the restaurant has old and new atmosphere choice for seating. Recommended.

Slow service very small portions. I had Camenbert tarts with salad. Salad green leaves and THREE shreds of carrot what about tomato radish celery. We were going to take Canadian friends there for lunch but not now. Our first and only visit.

Ok so it was a gorgeous sunny day. So stunning to sit outside. Welcoming staff, lovely place and nice food and drink. Good views from outside too… But it was also nice inside so don't let the rain out you off!

If visiting area would recommend this for lunch or evening meal. Good food and price resonable (2 starters and mains with 2 drinks £40 to £50. Service good and staff seemed friendly. Decor done to good quality with contemporary parts and cozy pub feel in bar area. Outside seating and nice garden for summer. Suspect in peak times booking is advisable as only pub within headland. Did not seem that fit for kids more an adult focus.

Lovely food, was very busy and a little disorganised, we were handed a bill for food only, and as we had a number of drinks with our meal, we were honest enough to point this out and pay, but we did not even receive a thank you, or acknowledgement, I know the place was very busy but a little bit of courtesy goes a long way. This will not stop us returning as the food is always top class and we do enjoy the friendly table service.

Very good food, prepared to high standard also managed our toddler well too with decent options and ability to swap parts round from different meals to accommodate taste.

Beautiful location, sadly could not open the bedroom patio windows to see. Windows all steamy which pooled water on their wood floors. Tiles in bathroom cracked. Bed horribly uncomfortable, mattress too hard, sheets not wide/long enough. No pictures on the walls!? Shame, such great potential.

We had a table booked for 2.30pm to follow a nice walk round the Hambleton Peninsular. Unfortunately when we parked up for our walk the snow set in (not forecasted)! The very helpful staff at the Finches managed to squeeze us in early which was very much appreciated. The food and service that followed was first class. Our waiter was very pleasant and they were happy to accommodate my daughter by mixing and matching the roast dinner accompaniments with the tart — which she says was really tasty. We started with the tempura Prawns which was a very generous helping and very tasty. My husband had the roast sirloin of beef and he says it was the best he’d had. One very thick slice of rare beef exceptionally tender.
The pub was very busy with a great atmosphere and a lovely roaring fire on a cold snowy day. Even though it was busy the staff were very efficient and attentive.
I have frequented the finches before but mainly for light bites and coffee.
I would thoroughly recommend the Sunday menu with such a good choice.

Visited on a Sunday. Food was ok, although very small portions on both fish dishes. It was a nice atmosphere but a very long wait for both starters and mains. The veg for two of our meals was forgotten about and we had to flag over one of the waitresses in order to get it. Although the restaurant had been busy, on this occasion the staff seemed quite slow / sluggish and certainly not pleased to be serving us.

Beautiful venue for a wedding. Venues are gorgeous. Rooms are clean. Staff very helpful.

Tried to charge us £25 for a travel cot. After travelling around Scotland for the last week and not been charged once for a travel cot, £25 suddenly seemed a rip off. Manager claimed it was for extra insurance costs (? ). We were booking in the afternoon for the evening… they obviously don’t need to have full occupancy. Tried to find a reasonable compromise, but couldn’t. Booked with the Fox and Hounds … very welcoming and no charge for travel cot.

Lovely looking place, however the food wasn't quite up to what it could have due to small things. (For example, the soup was overly salty) The service started off well, however it appeared to reduce (despite the high amount of staff presence) and be less organised. Finally the billl was slightly off over the set menu, a fact promptly resolved however worth mentioning.

Stunning area, gorgeously quaint hotel. We visited at Christmas and it's the sort of place that is made for Christmas, cosy, full of charm, beautiful food and still modern enough facilities to make the stay comfortable. The staff perhaps aren't as well trained as you might hope but we paid £100 for a stay so we didn't expect too much. I'd happily stay here again.

The restaurant is located in a beautiful spot in the village of Hambleton overlooking Rutland Water The food was excellent and service good A very good selection of wines I would just mention that it does get very busy and parking is a bit limited We had to park on the road Overall a very good experience.

Service was excellent, having to put up with a noisy, busy work do they did excellently. Food lovely, would definitely eat there again, just a shame we couldn't see the supposedly excellent views over Rutland water as we were there during the dark! Hope to visit again soon.

Visited the finches Arms for a work Christmas party. The food was excellent, and the whole evening had a great atmosphere. The staff were all very friendly and the bar had an excellent range of drinks. It's a shame it was a dark winters evening as I know the view over the Reservoir is stunning.

We booked dinner for 8pm on Saturday night although when we arrived there was a slight confusion as our booking had been written in the wrong name. No problem for the professional staff who offered a drink while they sorted out our table. The service was great and the food exquisite. I had the chilli beef medallions … absolutely fabulous, what a great chef. The whole experience was relaxed with just the right amount of time between courses. Thanks to the Finches Arms for a lovely evening and I highly recommend this venue if you enjoy excellent food and great service.

We can't thank The Finch's Arms enough for providing the perfect venue for our wedding reception in July this year. We had a wonderful day. Having spent several anniversaries in Rutland, particularly Oakham and Hambleton, and actually at The Finch's Arms itself, it has been a special place to us for a long time. The food has always been outstanding and we couldn't consider any other venue for our day. The location by Rutland Water is beautiful and The Finch's Arms itself is so well looked after and the staff are always lovely. We are particularly thankful to Amie and Joe for going above and beyond for us. Amie put a lot of effort into the planning and actually outdid our florist with her arrangements around the whole restaurant and bar, they were beautiful. Joe was the first person we spoke to at Finch's about the wedding and he filled us with confidence. He didn't disappoint when he was there to manage the whole day to absolute perfection. He really looked after us and our guests and I hope he knows that his attentiveness, and exceptional service were deeply appreciated and also praised by all of our family. Thanks is also due to the chef! The canapés were incredible and so greatly enjoyed by everyone. Unfortunately, they were so good that many of us ate far too many of them and couldn't eat our dinner later! A dinner which was also absolutely outstanding. The surprise sharing platters were beautifully and thoughtfully put together. Everyone enjoyed them thoroughly!

Cannot fault the food at this restaurant; it was delicious and well-presented. Alas, the service was poor and the attitude of the waiter was quite appalling. He was brusque to the point of rudeness — first our booking could not be found, then we were rushed through to the restaurant, hastily given a menu and told to hurry up with our choices as the kitchen was closing soon. We were told the soup was broccoli and stilton and were served tomato which we rejected. Bizarrely, the waiter denied saying the soup was broccoli and stilton! Our drinks order was taken and the drinks failed to arrive until we reminded them. Three of us dined, and when our main courses were over and we were asked if we wanted a dessert, we were given two menus so had to share! Such a shame that the lovely food was not done justice by the bad service.

No atmosphere food was very good but not much on the plate the beer and wine was very very expensive £7.50 for a glass of red wine would not recommend this place.

Friendly service, lovely food and great atmosphere. We had a family meal here and all of the food was served promptly, correctly and to a high standard. We would definitely eat here again!

Booked for one night for anniversary. After four hours driving was looking forward to freshen up before dinner only to discover the room only had a bath with hand held water hose. Worse still the water temperature was very difficult to control, changing from cold to very hot. I had to have a cold shower in the end. Complained to the manager, got room changed but the new room's shower was just as bad. The following day we decided to try lunch at the pub below. Waited for 10 minutes, ignored by waiting staff, had to prompt them for menus. After 25 minutes we received our drinks and was ready to order food before being told it wasn't our turn to order yet. Weird. Waited another 10 minutes before deciding to pay up and leave. Went to bar to pay as table service was non existent. Complained to bar staff about the long wait only to be told, with no irony or apology, that there is a 45 minute wait to order. It was a Monday. God knows how long you have to wait on Sunday when apparently there are 200 customers. Can't recommend this place for either food or place to stay. Go elsewhere.

Super date venue. Tasty food and suitable service. Not great knowledge of wine list and staff a little invisible at times. Lovely space in picturesque and very charming village setting.

Great service and food. Very popular so will need to book. Good range of choices for food which is always well presented and very accommodating if you have particular requirements. Parking can be a little tight although we have never failed to park on site. Always found staff to be very helpful.

Nice atmosphere nice beer garden!

Friendly staff, accepted dogs in the garden, but outlandishly priced drinks! £12 for two pints and two soft drinks. They sold themselves on the view from the garden but sadly you couldn't see it as soon as you sat down. They really were friendly, but it just wasn't my kind of place. Only a small fraction of the pub was genuinely the old bit.

Very smart looking pub with open fire places. We were seated promptly and the staff were pleasant as well as friendly. Food was tasty and good portion sizes. They do allow cyclists who are muddy from their journeys.

Amazing food, absolutely loved it! Very friendly staff, everyone has a smile. I live 45 mins away but will always be coming back. Can't fault the finchs arms in any way. Down as a 3 star hotel?. This place should easily be 4 stars!

A lovely spot for a drink after a cycle around Hambleton Peninsula, I've only ever sat outside in the nice shaded beer garden. There is sometimes a wait at the bar for service but this is understandable as it's a big place. Never had food but it looks good… I always feel very underdressed in cycling gear!

We visited recently on a busy Saturday night and they absolutely nailed it for us across the board. Food, service, staff and value all spot on. We'll definitely be back soon.

Absolutely poor service. Sat for 20 mins with no acknowledgement. Even tried to spesk to staff who were very rude. Very nice place and location but snobby staff ruined the visit. We didnt stay to eat so cannot comment on food.

Arrived at 2pm on a Monday having seen on the website that food is served until 2.30 and was told that food no longer available as they have had a busy lunchtime service. Only 2 tables occupied in the restaurant and no-one in the bar. Manager is incredibly rude. Will not return.

Not been there but they don't seem to want any bookings as their phone number does not pick up ever or says it's unobtainable. Repeatedly from different phones so defo their phone.

I rented a nearby cottage for a couple of nights for my girlfrinds 50th birthday, I chose that particular cottage as it was surrounded by wonderful views and only 50yds from The Finch's Arms! We knew it was going to be busy (the first night we went there was a Saturday). Unfortunately we hadn't booked a table so weren't able to eat but the staff were really friendly and there was a nice relaxed atmosphere. The ever accomodating landlord upon hearing it was my girlfriends birthday on Sunday made sure we would have a table for two for dinner. Being Sunday we had the fixed 3 course roast beef and it was wonderful! Thick, tender slices of sirloin in a big, crispy Yorkshire pudding with equally well cooked roast potatoes, vegetables and a tasty gravy. Whoops, so keen on the main I forgot to mention the starter was pretty good too! (goats cheese mousse for milady, leek and potato soup for me). Dessert was mouth-wateringly good, we both had creme brulee with cherries in brandy — it wasn't a sauce, the cherries really were soaked in a good brandy! It made my girlfriends evening when the landlord arrived unexpectedly at our table with two glasses of champagne on the house and wished her happy birthday! How nice that he should remember and make it a special occassiopn for two people he'd only met briefly and would probably never expect to see again — he will though, we'll be back.

Delicious food in great surroundings but less than welcoming greeting, and clumsy service. Lunch on a quiet Monday; arrived at 11:45 to be told that service didn't start until 12:00 noon. Had to ask if we could have a drink while waiting, greeter only grudgily agreed. Menus not available until 12:30. Chef clearly knows what he is doing and can recommend the Roast Cod with Cassoulet, the Haddock and Chips and the Chicken with Bacon Mash. Watch out for the 75p bread and butter and the £2.50 for side veg, but the short wine list is reasonably priced and the real ales are well kept. Waited 20 minutes for dessert only to find dish ordered was not available. Would recommend and will return but it will have to be better next time.
