We stayed there this weekend and it was fabulous, recommended 👍🍺the staff were brilliant.

Lovely meal last night. Both had burgers, one Beef burger and one pulled pork! Very tasty and lovely chips and sweet potato fries. Good portion size. Shared Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream with was excellent! Lovely atmosphere and good service! One thing we found a bit odd was the waitress with dark hair kept helping herself to food from a couple she obviously knew’s plates throughout their meal! Not very professional! Apart from that, very nice 👌

Thanks To Gemma & her team for a wonderful overnight stay! The check in went quickly & smoothly. Lovely room with all the extra touches to make it homely & snuggly. All the bar staff were friendly and the whole evening was great fun. After a complete comfortable nights stay, very comfy beds, duvets & pillows…. We came downstairs to the best breakfast we’ve ever had at any hotel! High quality produce, all piping hot, on hot plates! (Just how I like it! ) The only negative is me banging my head on a wooden beam in the bedroom — but that’s me being a total clutz and no fault of the establishment itself! We will stay again and would highly recommended! Thanks to all the staff who made our stay so nice with the wonderful & friendly service! (Also a big thank you to Tom, for giving us a lift from the brewery to The Sun! Perfect timing! ) x x x.

Fantastic Christmas meal! The food was fantastic, the service was wonderful, and the decorations and atmosphere were great. The kitchen went out of their way to deal with food intolerances and the Sun was very flexible and accomodating to the needs of my group. I hope to book a Christmas meal with them again next year! A big thank you to all the members of staff who helped my group have a great time.

Lovely building with great ambience. Good food including veggie and vegan options. Extensive range of drinks and really friendly, helpful staff.

The beer garden setting is lovely and the service is superb. I highly recommend if you want to have a few drinks in a chill and casual atmosphere.

Very relaxed atmosphere in these strange times which is what we need! we've been a few times and seen they've adapted positively to ensure they continue to meet a good standard of customer service which is very reassuring and the food is always spot on.

A very pleasant experience, all told. We left Merchants because we were sat on hard wooden chairs, next to very noisy children and the menu was extremely limited. The Sun was the complete opposite and the service and food were excellent.

Lovely stay, great food, relaxed atmosphere and helpful staff in a beautiful bullding, would definitely recommended x.

I have stayed at the Sun Hotel many times over the years. Always had a great time, with their selection of beers, general ambience and superb breakfast. The last time I stayed, Lancaster was unfortunately flooded, which temporarliy knocked out the power in the entire city. The local businesses banded together and helped any individuals who were badly affected. This might seem like a small grievance to some. But my wife & I paid for breakfast at the Sun. Obviously we couldn't have one. So we opted for 2 packet of crisps, which we were still charged full price for. I might have thought with the problems the city had. The Sun might have put their profiteering to one side and offered their patrons free snacks. Sadly it was the management who lost them a regular custoner. Unfortunately I haven't been back since.

Stopped here a few times now absolutely love it love the rooms especially room 11 great food which caters for everyone good selection of drinks all in all a very pleasant stay.

Loved our stay here and would definitely stay again! Friendly staff and very helpful! Comfortable beds and spacious too! Very restful and close to great things to do! I recommend them for anyone wanting an affordable stay with great food and comfortable bed! Plus the best staff I came across in my stay in England!

Really cool bar! Got all the lovely Lancaster Brewery Ales and Ciders which are very enjoyable. The layout if pretty cool, with loads of interesting facts dotted about. The food is also really lovely. Definetly recommend it!

Nice hotel with very traditional English setting. The restaurant and bar area are lovely, however, the waiting staff don't take drink orders so you have to go to the bar each time you want to order a drink which is a bit of a pain. Rooms are of high standard and would recommend for a stay.

Great atmospheric place, residential, good restaurant and friendly bar. Good menu, good food and more than well presented. Overall an great experience and well enjoyed, will definitely visit again.

The place is really in the center, so it can get a little noisy on a Saturday night. Besides that, it was a very nice stay. Staff was kind and helpful. Breakfast was very good. The room was today and nicely decorated. The bathroom was clean and fully functional. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommended!

I went here because the last time I went here I had the best risotto that I've ever had in my life so I tried again it turns out the risotto wasn't on the Specials menu but, they also do the best burger I've ever had in my life as well! The bacon, the sauce, the horseradish oh it tasted of tasty cow and it was tasty. The fries were really good, you could tell the oil was fresh. Same as last time. And the service was really good, really posh hotel level of customer service. The quality and cleanliness was immediately apparent. Even the toilets were clean and fresh. A really good place to go, they have a gorgeous garden area and the interior is made from bits of the 1800's. They even claim to have a beam from a ship that was part of the force that engaged and defeated the Spanish armada I really recommend this place, especially if you want some properly good posh nosh. Your guests will be impressed and want to go out with you again. I paid less than 50 quid for a meal with starters and shared stuff for 3 people. As well as a cloudy man-beer made from wheat. Quality food and really good atmosphere and service. Twice in a row! Can't wait to visit again! i.

Have been here many times and it is usually brilliant. Lunch simply seemed overpriced for what we got.

Fantastic pub and great beers.

Went for breakfast with a friend friendly staff member said I could help myself to tea while I waited for my friend to arrive. Breakfast finished at 10.30 so I went to put my order in at the bar. I waited for a few minutes and in the end had to go to reception where I could hear the staff having a discussion in the kitchen. I alerted them to my presence my order was taken and our food came out promptly. Delicious breakfast with a perfect poached egg, lovely tasty sausage and the fried potatoes were really delicious really good. My friend had the vegetarian breakfast breakfast and was most impressed with the veggie black pudding. A good breakfast made with tasty local produce.

The Sun is okay as far as pubs go. It is pleasant enough to sit in. It's prices are quite high though, and, though I believe it is linked to the Lancaster Brewery, you can find Lancaster Brewery products cheaper in other pubs that are just as nice if not nicer to sit in throughout Lancaster. Just my opinion though, I know a few people who really like the Sun.

Just had 3 course meal in bar First class home made food Very nice makes a change from rushed microwave food.

We went there for breakfast and not only their breakfast menu was extensive, but it also had 3 vegan options — didn’t expect it! I had Açai bowl and asked for sourdough on the side. Teas and orange juice are included in your breakfast price. Oh, and a lady called Jess who was serving us was very lovely and smily (do you see many people smiling at you at 8am on a Saturday?! ). Would come back again.

Nice beer & food but thinks if u pay for sandwiches u may as well get a meal for the price.

We had a meal in the evening. The food was excellent — fairly expensive but well presented, bountiful and very tasty. Service was a little slow and disorganised — it took some time for us to be able to order our food. Everyone was friendly enough though. As the night wore on, more staff seemed to appear, but they were hanging around the bar, like they were waiting for guests to leave. All in all, odd, but very good food.

Beautiful historic hotel in great location. Excellent choice of ales (many supplied by Lancaster brewery) and unusual gin cocktails, me and my partner enjoyed a lovely night had a fab full English breakfast with continental self-serve buffet helped by a professional & generous host! All staff were lovely in fact. Food at tea was great too and reasonably priced. Can’t reccomend hotel enough (book by sun hotel website for free breakfast), Full of character, charm and interesting plaques of info about site throughout grounds.

Good location, close to secure parking. Great bar and choice of real ales, gins. Exceptional staff, every one of them from booking in at reception to bar staff to staff in the morning serving a fantastic breakfast. We would highly recommend this place. Tip — book direct through the hotels website for free breakfast instead of your search engine discount sites.

Loved my stay at the Sun. A friendly place and well located so I could walk everywhere. Weekends, the crowd stays up late outside talking so bring ear plugs or stay up with them and enjoy the locals.

I have been here a few times and have always found it to be charming and excellent. The food is great, and I have been for a number of cheeseboards here too. They have a good selection of ales and beers. Equally they do have regional and seasonal specials too. Atmosphere can be busy, but it never feels too busy and the staff have always been helpful and friendly.

Very pleasant hotel room and very good staff. We didn't get to visit the bar but it looked lively when we walked through it. Even so, we couldn't hear any noise from the bar when we were in the bedroom.

I love coming here. The food is always delicious, be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and their hot chocolate is to die for. Very nice, quiet place to read in the day and lively at night. Their alcohol selection is fantastic and cocktails are very nice.

This is one of my favourite places in the world… we’ve stayed a few times before and this place holds some very special memories for us. This trip was booked as a surprise — such a relaxing and friendly place, service is impeccable and the food is outstanding. We had a deli board both nights and I could have eaten about 20 portions of the whitebait. The breakfast is exceptional and the staff are so lovely a really relaxing stay, can’t thank you enough for such a lovely time. We'll deffo be back.

Always stay here when I used to visit Lancaster, rooms are decent, meals are stunning, drink selection is fantastic. Good value for money and always recommended.

Really nice bar and hotel. I can't say what the hotel part is like but the bar is great. I enjoyed the mulled plum cider at Christmas. The food is good but pricey for the amount you get. There's outdoor seating but beware pigeons maybe we were just lucky.

The sun is one of the highlights of the Lancaster drinking scene. The bar is always well stocked and tended. The food is always locally sourced and of good quality. The rooms in the hotel are beautiful and well furnished.

Beautiful hotel with moden, stylish and spotless rooms. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. I wish I could have stayed another night. After a month traveling through Great Britain this was my favorite hotel and it was an outstanding value.

Never stayed here so can only comment on food & drink offering. Not the cheapest pub in town but quality beers, wines & spirits. Good selection of cask ales although biased towards Lancaster Brewery. Decent selection of food on offer, well prepared and good quality. Service can be slow even when not busy and who serves garden peas with Fish & Chips. Gotta be mushy peas, this is Lancashire guys!

This is a very nice place, somewhere I have enjoyed on my past visits. I came here for lunch with my granddaughter, I asked a staff member if we could order drinks, she pointed to the bar and said thats where I would have to order. At this time there was no one behind the bar, another customer arrived, we waited and waited. Our order was eventually taken, our fish and chips arrived, the batter on the underside of the fish was soggy, and the chips could have been hotter. The staff were lovely, someone did come and ask if everything was ok but, not wanting to spoil our precious time together I didn't make a fuss. I feel reluctant to come again and left feeling very disappointed.

Stayed for one midweek night. Lovely warm welcome and throughout the stay all staff were very friendly. Room was immaculate, well appointed with modern bathroom. Contemporary design throughout the hotel, well stocked relaxed bar area. Breakfast was excellent — have stayed here 3 times and always excellent — highly recommended and would return any time.

Always a nice place for a quiet weeknight dinner and drink. Food is reliably good and they have great drink on tap. Staff is always exceptional. Very friendly and helpful. Weekends are busy — — best to book ahead.

My mum booked us in for the night of our wedding 11/2/17 and breakfast was included in the price so I went in to the sun 2 weeks before the wedding to see if we could have are breakfast in are room the morning after and was told point blank no then my now husband went in the morning of the wedding and offered £20 to have are breakfast brought up to which point blank no again I can understand places get busy but we even said we would wait till they had sorted every other customer but no we will never return again such a shame as the room was nice.

Nice and clean the waterlogic water cooler are nice and clean cool water.

The roasts here are very good each week you get a choice of of two different meats that are served with all of the trimmings. In our most recent visit however the dinner was not served with a Yorkshire pudding which may be a change in the menu. Apart from this the staff were very friendly and it was a great meal.

Upon entering the hotel (entrance via the bar during a busy period) it wasn't initially clear where the reception area was for chwxj in but once we found it staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was lovely and clean and bed very comfy. Appreciated that the in room hot drinks included hot chocolate. The complimentary breakfast was lovely. Great selection and very filling. Slight mix up with our breakfast order but the staff were very apologetic and quickly resolved. Great veggie options for breakfast too.

This review is only about breakfast, not the hotel rooms nor lunch/dinner. Reasonable fare, not inexpensive. Made a bit worse by the lackadaisical staff, bordering on the rude. 31 minutes between ordering and being served a routine full English! Certainly did not make me keen on going back.
