The best Christmas meal we have ever had and the best service and food we have ever had to. Amazing perfect 😍

Met a friend here, who I hadn’t seen for years. We talked and ate magnificently and never felt pressured to hurry or leave. Everyone was warm and welcoming and the bar menu was brilliant. Would not hesitate to recommend and this place would be a reason for returning to Winchester.

Absolutely superb! Staff are warm and accommodating. Service is fast and friendly. The food is beyond wonderful. It’s gastro pub meets old world warmth and charm.

The staff are so polite and helpful. Haddock and Chips were outstanding and the salad was crisp and fresh. Prices are reasonable. You can average £20.00 a head for a main meal and a drink. Can highly recommend The Wykeham Arms with its stunning nostalgic decor.

We walked into Winchester for lunch and once again had a lovely meal at the Wykeham Arms. What’s not to like? Great location. Great food. Great drinks. Great staff.

Had an impromptu dinner here tonight… and have to say, it was a good decision. The food was incredible (although please get rid of the scratchy grey plates), and the service… well Dylan, I love you too! Seriously, service was fantastic and much great advice given.

Our favourite is the Bakehouse. We love the slightly quirky nature of the place. We've been staying in Winchester for quite a few years and this is the best. It's also improved during our stays.

Very busy, excellent bar staff that dealt with very challenging customers, who should have been barred!

The food was very disappointing. The slow roasted lamb was very fatty and tough. It was advertised as being served with a shallot jam. It wasn’t and when we queried as to where the jam was our waitress looked bemused and went to check with the chef. She cams back and told us they had run out of shallot jam and blamed the kitchen for not telling her! Ironically the people on the next table then ordered the lamb and the waitress didn’t mention the lack of shallot jam to them either! To be fair the ales were good and there was a lovely selection of vegetables with the meal. We weren’t charged for the meal after voicing our displeasure.

Excellent for beer the food didn’t resemble exactly what it said on the tin. When we spoke to our waitress she was very condescending and didn’t really realise what was actually on the menu. Awful food experience. We will go back but not to eat.

The staff are great and have been very accommodating to make us feel happy in our stay. I would definitely recommend.

My wife and I called in for a drink on our wedding anniversary as this was where friends and family gathered for a meal the evening before our wedding in 1981! The pub is "wallpapered" with memorabilia of a historic and political nature. I would love to have the time to look at it all. There are at least four rooms where you can eat plus a garden. The staff are friendly and courteous.

A quaint pub from another time. The Wykeham Arms has a beautiful historic interior styling with knick-knacks from throughout it's history adorning the walls. It has a good selection of rooms to stay in if you're visiting Winchester for a few days (or if you've had one too many at one of their special event nights! ). The food is of a good standard with a varied seasonal menu and the service on the whole is on point. Their roast dinner or fish & chips are amazing.

Been here on both of our visits to Winchester, a really excellent unique pub that everyone should visit. Beautiful decor and a warm welcome awaits. Although on my first visit I thought there were more beers, maybe I am getting fussy with age.

Lovely food and friendly staff. I'm in a room across the road from the pub. Very quiet street but behind Cathedral so really central. Great for a weekend break.

Stayed for one night … we had the nelson room, which was ok, but decor and lighting too dark for my liking… Bathroom was nice and bright… no bath robes in a superior room.?. Complimentary beer in fridge, for my husband would have been nice to have a drink for myself other than water.
Room was clean, staff very friendly. Managed to park in car park at rear which was a bonus, though a bit of a squeeze. Breakfast ok, bit expensive for what there was… as it was not included in room price.

This is my favourite pub in Winchester. The food is fantastic and the atmosphere is good. Always a pleasure to visit.

Absolutely fantastic pub and the food is outstanding but the girl with black skirt and maroon top on needs some serious training in customer service. Everything was delivered by a sigh and it became the talking point of our meal. The rest of the staff and service was as usual excellent.

Nice rooms However a bit shocked by rudeness of waitress when as a party of 5 we sat in wrong area of pub. This was disappointing as we’d not experienced such a poor attitude when we’d stayed here before. Trish.

Always a lovely venue with a great atmosphere and good beer. The food was tasty though if I am honest the change in the menu since I was last there (a few years ago? ) is a bit disappointing. It really should do better than burgers, fish and chips etc…

Such a nice friendly place. Really three pubs in one: lively bar, especially when rugby is on; and two restaurant areas either side each with a different character. Really lovely staff, good food, bit pricey, but superbly cooked and delicious. Good beer, fabulous coffee made by people who know how to create froth which is solid on a cappuccino, grand puddings. Well worth going to.

Unfortunately we had not booked and there was no place for me and my colleagues. However, the kitchen closed at 9 a. M. To Saturday night… Seriously?

Nice cosy English pub with good restaurant. One can book a private room which is ideal for closed groups and parties. Service is nice and responsive.

Great, historically interesting, pub, restaurant, hotel. Not cheap, but hey… this is probably the nicest and quirkiest venue in the whole city? You can spend an age just looking at the ornaments and artefacts. Can get super busy and at these times, service can be painfully slow. Thus only 4*. No dedicated parking and the location doesn't help with this problem.

Went there for a Christmas meal organised by a friend. The food was lovely but they completely messed up our reservation. Instead of a Christmas meal with crackers and such, we were sat down to a table with menus and asked what we wanted. We had already ordered all our food, and they were quick to try to sort it out. The staff were apologetic and helpful, but still a pretty fundamental error.

Last minute cancellation
We had made a booking for my birthday over a week ago and had received multiple confirmations. On the day, we drove an hour to Winchester and 1h before we were due at the Wykeham Arms got a message advising us that our booking had been cancelled as the place wouldn’t accommodate our baby there.
The fact that kids are not allowed should have been made clear on the booking page and/or we should have been done earlier.
We are now in Winchester with a baby and nowhere to go for lunch. Thank you Wykeham Arms for ruining what could have been a great day!

Lovely traditional pub, always busy (in a good way) and with a great atmosphere. The set menus are excellent value.

Such a nice atmosphere. Wine was excellent, food was very good — is not Michelin star but then you wouldn't expect that. Mum had fish and chips where the fish was remarkably well cooked (perfect, glistening, not overcooked).

My partner and I went for diviner last night at the Wykeham Arms in Winchester. We were looking for somewhere new to try as it was a special night out for us both as child free evenings out together are rare. We were not let down. Right from the friendly welcome and intimate dining area of the pub to some of the most amazing dishes we have tried. The pavlova on the dessert menu was a definite highlight with a perfect combination of sweet and savoury to finish of the meal. Top quality food and attentive friendly staff, made this a memorable dining experience for us both. Very highly recommended.

Fabulous atmosphere and a great staff! To be surrounded by such ancient history and such good food and drinks is amazing.

We stayed overnight in a small house accessed through a building on the opposite side of the road. There was a bedroom upstairs and a separate sitting area with a sofa bed downstairs. The bathroom was everything you'd need and the shower had great water pressure, albeit the head is possibly a little low in height for anyone above 5'9 or so. The staff were super and the food excellent. Within a stone's throw from the Cathedral and city centre but very quiet — our bedroom window was wide open overnight and the only noise in the morning was from the birds and the cathedral bells.

We always love it here it's been tooooo long since our last visit! Fabulous food, great wine list and friendly staff! Can't recommend this place enough we love it!

Staff were very relaxed, friendly and helpful. The food was great and despite warnings of having to wait was actually very prompt. I personally would have liked a wider selection of local craft beers but liked what was available.

What's not to love? Great staff, stunning individual bedrooms, roll top bath and rain forest showers to die for. History, quirky, yet understated and lacking pretentiousness. Great food and is still, essentially a pub!

Only stayed one night but our room in the annex was lovely nothing was bad about it well kept and thought out we had everything we need and the bed was so comfortable. The meal we had in the evening was o so good and the wine even better. The service we were given by the waiting staff was good efficient and the young lady had a good knowledge of the wine on offer. We were able to enjoy our meal and the staff were not intruesive a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. The choice at breakfast was good and the menu well thought out.
From the moment of our arrival to our departure we felt welcome and well looked after.

The Wykeham was a regular haunt for me back in the early years of the current millennium. Even then the place's heyday was already long gone following the departure of the much-loved original landlord, but enough of the character remained to draw the old crowd in. The intervening years have resulted in a blander, more upmarket place, though judged against the standards of your average tied pub it's still decent: competent staff, reasonable beer and at least there's no music. I recently went for dinner which again was unexceptionable if unexceptional. Somewhat overpriced and over ambitious but no moreso than your average pub really. One thing to be wary of is the chateau briand which the diner next to me had: outrageously tiny for £60. I only hope there were mitigating circumstances. It remains a classic pub of the city, but sadly diminished with age.

Great pub, interesting interior and good variety of drinks. Good food too although quite expensive. Can get a bit busy with long waits at the bar.

This is a pub with an inn, so remarking separately, but in short, both fantastic and highly recommended. Pub: as a CAMRA member I would happily call this my local if I lived here! 5 ales on tap, good selection, but most importantly poured properly and well maintained! All staff I interacted with was very pleasant and helpful. All bar staff knowledgeable on their beers. Having dinner and breakfast, both meals were amazing! Fresh, flavorful and appropriate serving sizes. Inn: I stayed in the single room on the second floor. Clean, well kept, comfortable bed, and pub's Wi-Fi adequately in range in the room. Note: if you're an American (as I am) you might find this room small. But I'm no stranger to small rooms and this definitely does the trick! I will stay here again!

Found this restaurant on Michelin recommended guide. Went there for dinner on Saturday. Long wait to order anything as expected on a busy weekend. But the reason for 1 star is that I found a worm in my main course, and then the waitress told me to wait 20 minutes if I want to change to another dish, which by that time my partner would have already finish her main course. When we try to order desserts, we were told that something chaos happened in the kitchen and they weren't able to cook any more food. Never go back there again.

Wonderful old school atmosphere literally with old desks to sit at with ink wells placed round the room or sit near a roaring fire and the bar. Enter through a curved door from the street and step back in time, head towards a cozy restaurant to be treated with a smile and the Kindest of staff. Part of the college, part of the community a big part of our history within the walls, the surroundings and the people. Glance at all the old pictures of Nelson and Winston and feel part of England's history past and present. Very good dining, exceptional food caters for all dietry demands where possible and very friendly staff. I have stayed in several rooms this year and many more to come, they have Grand rooms in a truly old world tradition, typical of the surrounding style of the college and nearly as old. A must if you want a journey into the past with the modern comforts a true delight. I could write more but but that is now for you to discover.

Welcoming staff. Breakfast poor quality ingredients. Evening meal poor. Scallops were small and only 3 for a tenner. Also texture of snot. Fish and chips would have been better at weatherspoons. Expensive. Never going back.

Just got back from a Birthday treat away at the Wykeham Arms. After an initially warm welcome from friendly staff, the experience of The Wykeham Arms as a whole turned out to be rather disappointing. It is well situated near the college and cathedral and a short walk into town. The bar had lovely warm log fires and a cosy atmosphere and lots of nice quirky features (including old Thomas Crapper toilets! ). We didn't use the outside area, but there looked to be a decent sized seating area (with patio heaters) should you wish to sit out on a good day. Generally it is a nice pub, but, there were a few niggles! Whilst there was a good choice of ales and wines, the choice of lagers on tap was very limited and the drinks were the most expensive that we experienced in the whole of Winchester (and we tried a few pubs! ). As a special treat, we booked a table to eat on the evening of my birthday and we felt let down. I found the menu very limited. We ordered a starter of Scallops to share as my partner was unsure about them as he has only tried scallops once and we wanted to save a bit of money off the bill. We were looked at quizzically because we wanted to share the starter. When they arrived, the Scallops were really tiny, there were only three of them and they weren't very nice… sort of mushy and not very warm… nothing like the tasty scallops I have had in the past.

Lovely old fashioned and cosy pub in the heart of historic Winchester, serves a reasonaable range of beer. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

My friend and I had a lovely lunch with excellent service. The environment is wonderful.

Surprisingly disappointing. Waited 30 mins for £15 boar burger to arrive to disappointed severe lack of seasoning. Was devoid of any flavour which is hard to achieve with wild boar. Was recommended, and walked 10 mins in the driving rain, which made it more so. Beer range very limited and staff very polite but very stretched in a not very busy restaurant. £20 for a pint and burger. Go to McDonald's instead…

So disappointing! My birthday treat so complaints were kept to a minimum as we didn't want to spoil the atmosphere. We opted for appetisers rather than a starter. No sooner had the olives and bread been served when our main course came! I commented on the fact that we had not been given time to eat our appetiser and was told it was because the bread wasn't cooked for the starter so they were late in serving it! OK so why not delay main course as well? My main course of scallops was tepid and very soon turned to cold which made them unpleasant to eat. Not good. Overpriced. We will not be returning.

Wonderful ambience, excellent food and would definitely recommend this historic "watering-hole" as a destination Pub/restaurant. Dogs welcomed but children are not as there are open fires and lots of nooks and crannies.

The ideal pub — friendly, efficient service and care taken over drinks and food. It works for a drop in pint or a special meal with good friends. Foreign visitors cant believe how lovely it is and always want to return next visit. Landlord and crew run a great inn.

The Wykeham Arms is reliably excellent — great range of beers and wines, food is varied and plentiful and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We watched a number of the Six nations games there last year so no need to travel to Twickenham again.

I took six other people here for dinner, and the food was very good, all round, we all had something different, and three courses. All the courses were good sizes, so you didn't feel hungry or stuffed, and not one comment that wasn't "great" I love the atmosphere of this historic pub, and the fires in the winter. The old school desks are an interesting touch, and on a summer evening, the back garden is a dream. would recommend this to anyone who cares about what they eat.
