Just had a few days at little john hotel, thinking we were in a hotel room with our dog, but in loxley cottage in the grounds. Absolutely beautiful, thank you so much. Food and staff were fabulous. We will be back.

Went in for a pint at last orders, got fined £100. Management seemingly not interested to help genuine customers caught out by this. Avoid!

Had the lovely new Sunday roast carvery yesterday, it was delicious and very reasonably priced.

We went for a night away for my dads birthday& stayed in the cottages. They were clean, nicely decorated& spacious& dog friendly! We also had a meal as a family in the restaurant which the owner Steph decorated nicely for us. There were 24 of us and the food came out in a timely fashion& was very nice and good portions. 100% would recommend to anyone!

The Little John looks like it's recently been refurbished, had one night stay, the rooms were decent and there was a good variety of breakfast to choose from. If its a night or two stay you looking for I'd certainly try it.

Pleasant little pub for a lunch stop. Fantastic portion sizes for the price of the kids’ meals; £5.50 including an ice cream! Very hard-working staff, it became busy quickly with a folk band entertaining and the staff were still so accommodating and helpful even though they were unexpectedly rushed off their feet. And doggy friendly too to top it all off! Would definitely pop in again next time we are around.

Location is at the bottom of the hill in Hathersage. There are higher class pubs/restaurants round there in all honesty. Depends what you're looking for. Suggest Scotsman's Pack, or the Plough which is a walk out of the village.

Been here a few times when up in the peaks. The first time was a few years back just for a few beers one eve. When a fight broke out between the locals (one came in swigging a bat around). The second time the locals at the bar made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome, we stayed for food that was what you would expect from a Weatherspoons but the prices were much the same so you get what you pay for.

Poor vegetarian choice on the menu. Great black out curtains at the window but nothing at the window in the ceiling awake at 4.30 every morning. Otherwise would have a been a 4 star ftom me.

Great steak & ale with mashed potatoes and mashed peas for only £9. Comfy environment and nice bar.

Looks a nice place and they let dogs in. Staff were friendly. Only had a quick drink we will return for a meal at some point it looked lovely.

The Little John was bustling, and an exciting place to walk in to. Sadly, let down by unwelcoming staff, poor service, and average food. The bar staff were cold and unwelcoming, and our mediocre food was delivered 10 minutes apart, with no explanation as to the delay. Upon asking a passing waiter for something, his response was a 'shushing' finger over his lips, and a "wait, I'll be with you soon". Terrible. The beer was nice.

Very nice venue, had everything, nice room, breakfast, bar and great location and very friendly staff, would definitely stay there again.

Nice place, friendly staff, good location, bedrooms are a good size but because of this it was a little cold!

Not too far from the station — great selection of drinks and a great pool table that whenever we visit we play at. Haven't eaten there yet but the food looks great.

A nice little pub, nice inside but service with a sneer and under cooked food let this place down massivly. Obvious that its the locals that keep the place with its head above water, give it a miss.

It was ok. Service was slow / forgetful and we didn't get room service at all, our bathroom light didn't work, … On the other hand the breakfast is really good, the room was perfectly warm and in a great location. For the priice it was worth it. We probably wouldn't come back.

Stayed here for the weekend, accomadation cosy with everything you need, food and menu choice were great. Staff very welcoming and being dog friendly makes it much easier to stay away without having to use kennels. Great location the heart of Derbyshire, with lovely walks and shops on the doorstep. Will deffinately return and most certainly would recommend. Thank you Little John for the most enjoyable weekend.

I’ve been coming to Hathersage for 11 years and always staying just round the corner two minutes away. I had never gone in before because it always looked a bit of a dive. Im aware it seemed to have a refit a while ago and as I passed by it looked really nice inside. So I decided to have a go at eating. As a veggie I was impressed with three veggie meals on the impressive menu. It also had bread and butter pudding! Heaven. The food was marvellous and I’d recommend it. Il’l certainly go again. Staff were welcoming and professional. Well done.

Food was mixed. Some meals poor-many simply unavailable. Others like mixed grill excellent. Short staffed and not hospitable or even friendly.

Lovely food and great, friendly service. Highly recommended for visitors to the area, especially walkers and dog owners.

Service was excellent, had some great banter with the barman, but he still bent over backwards to help. The décor is pretty standard pub, but well done. Food was excellent, most people were thoroughly stuffed. Only reason for not giving 5 stars was that the prices were really high for a country pub. A beer, cider, and a couple of soft drinks came to over £15! Also, shooting myself in the foot here, be warned: this place is paying Google for 5* reviews via Google opinion rewards. I know because that's how I came to be writing this. I would be getting double the cash for 5*. Here's hoping no one is actually vetting this. Still, in all honesty, a great place worthy of your time if you don't mind paying.

Was ok and the food was fine. Bit put off by the pile of ironing on a table thought! Staff were friendly and food reasonable price.

We dined here on mother's day but the steak was too tough to eat had to send it back. The replacement meal of gammon was good. Unfortunately for mother someone had made the gravy too strong and gloopy thick. Resulting in her meal being too salty to eat. She returned the meal but did not want a replacement because she had gone past eating. The puddings​ were all good and generous proportions​. We received a complementary drinks for the waiting​. The bar was extremely noisy and echoing, (lack of soft furnishings to absorb sound) people dressed as though they had been to a wedding were very loud. They need a door on the bar if they want to serve meals to the public in a relaxed atmosphere.

Friendly staff, interesting wall decoration and dog friendly. Well priced but couldn't get on to the Wi-Fi : (they have hotel facilities though and would consider them if staying in Hathersage and wanted to be central. Very close to the station :)

Popped in after a day climbing for some pub grub. We both had the beef and ale suet pie. Lovely! Friendly, good value and well worth a visit.

Visited to have a pint before train. It is spacious and quirky decorated. Beer selection is just ok. Few local brews on tap. We tried sticky toffee pudding and it was lovely.

Only stopped her for lunch and whilst the menu doesn't at first glance appear anything special, everything our group ordered was excellent. Good, hearty pub food and a pleasant environment (dog-friendly too! ). Their suet puddings are particularly good in my opinion, well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Nice little place in a lovely village, the only thing that let it down was the beer selection but it didn't really matter.

Rented a cottage for the weekend with some friends, the place was clean and tidy but attached to the smoking area for the bar. The air-con from the pub was loud and could be heard when the windows were open. We also had some issues with the shower not working right. Other than that the place was fine for basing ourselves while exploring the peaks!

It was OK. Bit run down and drunk mumbling men at the bar which resulted in being very uncomfortable and then he stumbled out. No music just TV re runs in the background.

Went in for a beer, seemed like a good place in which you could eat and/or watch sports. Had to wait a while because there were no staff on the bar. Beer was adequate and far more expensive for a half than a pint. Probably wouldn't recommend sorry.

Decent beer, decent price, nice staff, pool table! Lacks beer garden. Food is OK.

Came in for a quick drink and a warm up after a days climbing. Intended to play pool on the new looking pool table but too shattered we opted for a quiet sit down instead. Warm and friendly, a regular stop-off point on the way home.

We had a great stay here with a nice warm welcome from locals and all staff alike for us and our German shepherd dog. Room was very cosy with a great comfortable bed and bright fresh décor and bed linen, the rooms and the hotel have just been refurbished and feel very fresh (December 2013). A nice touch at breakfast was to be able to help yourself with fresh brewed coffee and toast branded breakfast cereals were also available. Food was good rustic pub grub, well priced, wholesome and served with generous portions and freshly cooked to order. Wine was also reasonably priced by the bottle and the bar served a nice selection of locally brewed real ales. A good location for exploring the area with easy access to bus routes railways and walks. All in all one of the best pubs we’ve stayed in for a long time.

The sign outside said "Muddy boots and dogs welcome" — music to the eyes of a member of the Long Distance Walkers Association — especially one from London and unfamiliar with this area. There are toys and novel things to look. Scatter cushions with union jacks in lilac with hearts remind me of 2012 and the Olympic buzz. I'd like to thank the staff for their forbearance when I kept going back asking for my jacket — it was in the youth hostel drying room — apologies. The food was substantial and sustaining. The orange juice fresh and thick. The cider fresh and zesty, the beers interesting and varied.

Got to love the John. You need a sense of humour to drink there and if you have one you will be in excellent company. Nice to see a village pub putting the effort in and providing value for money in a good environment.

A very warm welcoming pub with a variety of real ales, good food and friendly staff. I heartily recommend a visit. Dogs are welcome so if you want to take your best friends they can go too.

A group of 10 of us pre-booked an evening meal here. It was a busy Sat evening, but there should be no excuses for the bad service and food we recieved. The meals came out just a few at a time, so by the time the last people had their meals the first people had finished theirs. We had to wait 55 minutes until everyone had their meals. Two people had ordered mixed grills, which were unedible — one being very over cook, while the other was raw. The rest of the food was acceptable. When asked to speak to the manager, we were told that she had gone — we have to question whether that was actually true. We were given a refund for one meal, but they would not refund the other one. Also, a number of the seats were broken, which we had to swap around with other ones. Really really poor service and not willing to listen to our feedback and take any action on it. Will not be going back.
