We just popped in for a drink after a hike. The shandies were like nectar, the bar staff were efficient and friendly and the toilets were nice and clean. We enjoyed our drinks outside, watching the world go by!

It's fantastic food, clean bedroom, prices good thy are friendly felt like thy made me special thanks to everyone you will be seeing us again.

Don't like to do bad reviews but we waited a long time for our meals and our mains come out after about 50 mins, our starters had been missed. No garlic bread with one meal and when we re asked for it it was not cooked at all. Steak was very average and not worth the £20. No condiments at the table. Staff were friendly but rushed off their feet we appreciated it was busy so just informed the manager what had happened and he amended some of the bill for us. Great feel to the place though and the village is fab.

Had a lovely stay here. Food wonderful and staff very friendly and up for a laugh. Nothing was too much trouble☺

Great service. Food was delicious and quick. Good selection of Ales. Reasonably busy on a rainy day but plenty of tables.

Just back from a two night stay. Warm clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and could not do enough for us. The food was excellent, well cooked and good presentation. It was good to be able to eat in the dog friendly area. Our room 15 is a dog friendly room, could do with a little talc and a little noisy from room above. We loved our stay and will defiantly go back again. Thank you Steve and all your staff.

We had a lovely 2 days staying at the Charles Cotton hotel. Can not fault anything about our stay, apart from all the snow although we can't blame them for that. A nice choice of locally brewed beer and excellent food (would definitely recommend dining here). We were made to feel welcome, everyone was friendly and we were so glad that we braved the snow to get there!

Stopped in for some food whilst staying in the village. Very friendly staff, and great food. Can recommend the steak pie as it is homemade and made with short crust, not a cop out of beef casserole with a puff pastry lid. Perfect.

Smart country hotel. Good food. Great for weekend walkers walking upper reaches of River Dove and Manifold Valley. Cheese Shop round corner is a 'must' visit.

What a great place to go for a weekend and bonus you can take your dog. Highly recommend. Food lovely and staff very friendly. Would definitely book again.

Cosy pub, good food, friendly staff. Rooms definitely not 4 star. Several light bulbs needed replacing, fuses gone in bed side lamps, switched main light switch on in bedroom and sparks flew out and blew lights. Maintenance unavailable. Had to shower in the dark! Hotel has a very well used look, looking tired. No phone in room to contact reception if needed (which it was) particularly annoying when in room not attached to main building. Reception not sufficiently staffed. I would not grade this at 4 star.

Lovely building and room, and friendly staff. Only issue was the hotel seemed understaffed with our evening meal being delayed and overcooked; also, whoever cleaned the room during the stay had left the door ajar. Luckily our possessions were still there. Had a great stay though, and would return.

Lovely place to eat and some good beers on tap. Lovely village and hotel looks like it has good spacious rooms, two of which I believe are dog friendly.

Just came back from the Charles cotton hotel from the moment we booked the lady on reception who took our booking was so polite and helpfull the bar staff, ladies at breakfast time and the kitchen porter who brought us out a bucket of hot soapy water when we came back from a walk with muddy boots on everyone made our stay lovely. We had an evening meal and 2 lovely breakfasts both cooked perfect. The rooms yes are a bit dated and tired so I'd say this one is for the owner to come and have a look at? As the staff can only work with what they have. The bedding, shower was was very clean with fresh towels and bedding, there was shampoo/shower gel etc etc for our use. We will definitely go back the hotel is in a great spot and the staff work very hard and are very welcoming thank you all.

Cosy bar and restaurant. Nice meal, neatly presented. Staff friendly. Knocked a point off as the bill repeatedly came back without the incorrect amount on. Genuine error. Soon rectified though.

Were lucky to get food in here on a Saturday night without booking. Restaurant had a classy, yet friendly feel to it, bar was cosy. Food was nicely presented and tasty, a wee bit pricey. Staff pleasant. Unfortunately knocked off a star, as they kept getting the bill wrong. But got sorted in the end.

Great building. Amazing food. Fantastic staff. When I was billed they forgot to add the not inconsiderable drinks tally. I was more than happy to add this back my self and double it for the tip. The lamb shank was as good as you will get anywhere. Unpretentious, welcoming and well run. Highly recommended.

Charles Cotton is a completely unremarkable establishment. The staff are friendly but unhelpful and not knowledgable about the local area and unwilling to assist finding information. The room was also underwhelming and when we arrived the water in our room was switched off. We were told that they had just installed a new toilet & sink, however, based on the quality, this was not immediately apparent. It was clear however that the new amenities were cheap as our toilet seat came clean off on the first use. An officious member of staff then had the audacity to try and charge us for 'damage'. Perhaps this is a strategy they use to make extra revenue; having shoddy amenities and then charging customers for alleged damage? Finally the food was poor. The vegetarian breakfast consisted of an unidentifiable fried log that likely came from the freezer and the rest was below average. Considering their rates are relatively high, this was not good value for money.

Lovely staff, very helpful and great with the children. Food was delicious and reasonably priced, good beer and an amazing ladies loo!

Over the bank holiday we camped in Hartington and had food on the Saturday evening which sadly was not very good both the starter and main's one of which we didn't pay for! The staff are very helpful the place is nice just the food let it down : ( Food rating out of 10 would be a 3

Popular place for Real Ale enthusiasts as well as the discerning traveller looking for quality. Staff cater well for visitors and you are greeted as a regular regardless. Food is great and usually well earnt, returning from surrounding walks in a beautiful area. Parking at rear or opposite. The village has a pay and display car park left by 200 yds as you look at the front.

My wife and I do a fair bit of travelling and it is rare to find a little gem of a place like the Charles Cotton hotel. First and foremost was the relaxed environment of the hotel, the staff were genuinely friendly and welcoming. Next the food; normally I don't expect good well cooked meals in pubs and hotels but this was the exception. We enjoyed dinner so much that it was an ordeal to face breakfast the following morning. The rooms were clean and tidy and had everything we wanted from a walking holiday. Lastly the bar; if you enjoy good beer and a wee dram after a walk then the bar has an extensive selection of malt whiskies, beers, and ciders. Overall I would give the Charles Cotton 5 stars, excellent VfM and would certainly go back.

Having just spent two days here on a travelzoo deal we would like to say how much we enjoyed our stay very nice room a garden room for the dog (needed hand rail for bathroom steps please! ) Staff were lovely and chatty, welcomed ramblers in for coffees etc. Food at dinner was excellent — curry evening on Thursday very good indeed! well situated for Dales travel we visited Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock all on Dale roads, stunning views. Lots of improvements at the CC, drive upgraded, additional external lighting all while we were there. We would not hesitate to recommend.

Excellent hotel in a beautiful location. Staff some of the friendliest I've ever met whilst travelling, food wonderful and a lovely laid back cosy atmosphere. Rooms comfortable and quiet and lovely open fire in the bar area. Can't wait to visit again.
