The rooms are a bit dated but the service in the restaurant was very good we had a lovely meal and the breakfast was really nice.

Great facilities. Pool and gym. Breakfast is really good and quite cheap as an add-on… not very well advertised though!

Easy to drive into the near towns, well connected. Rooms where clean and the restaurant near by provided good food.

2 day stay. Very good value and top service in restaurant and bar. Never took full advantage of facilities available such as gym and pool.

It does the job, just. Small room, very small ensuite, worn furniture and halls. Decent pool and hot tub and bar.

Great if you need cheap accommodation with no frills. There's a pool and gym although I only stayed one night so didn't get a chance to partake of these services. The restaurant serves very decent food and I enjoyed my stay. Just don't expect The Hilton!

Stayed as part of an organised trip with National Holidays as a base for visits to Durham and Whitby. Basic but lovely hotel with great rooms, lovely restaurant, bar and food. Enjoyable nights stay.

We went to a wedding and stayed overnight. Good facilities and rooms, although a bit of dust here and there. Great shower. Didn't use gym or pool. Let down on our visit by a pong from "the drains". Bar staff didn't know what an Irish coffee was, and actually asked me what to put in it. Staff on wedding buffet didn't have a clue what was in the sarnies. Drinks a tad expensive: nearly £8 for two vodka and cokes is a lot for this area. Reception were spot-on though. Update: the Breakfast buffet was great.

A thoroughly disappointing stay. Had to move rooms due to no hot water, menu and staff didn't give all the details of the contents of a salad (I apologise that I am not a chef, so don't understand certain terms! ) and the main, a burger, was served cold! How hard is it to cook a burger or serve hot food? In addition, the buffet breakfast was replaced with a set order scheme due to the bad weather (which I fine) but don't offer a range of cooked eggs if you can't manage to poach an egg! On top of that, the staff (with the exception of the barman) gave the impression that we dared to put them out for staying there meaning they had to work instead of having a "snow day".

For sporting activities, swimming and relaxing afterwards. Good hotel for a short stay. Unfortunately a bit thin and overhanging mattresses. Otherwise clean and friendly staff. Breakfast 10 pounds. Kettle, coffee and tea in the room. Wake-up service on request.

Nice rooms, very comfortable beds, simple room design. Gym is very accessible to all the public not just guests, swimming the same. Lovely people on the desk, stayed here a few times and enjoyed it.

Had the Works Do here and it was packed. The food was so-so, probably due to the large volume of covers. The service was very good despite this. As a number of tables had been rammed together and covered with table cloths, the surface was uneven. Unaware of this my full pint spilled its' entire contents when it tipped over. Having queued for some time to get it I was delighted when the staff replaced it free of charge, quick sharp. The popular consensus from my colleagues was that a good time was had by all.

Three course Christmas lunch for £16 sounds like a bargain but even my school Christmas dinner for £2.50 was better. Overcooked veg and bland flavourings. I could barely touch the cold Christmas pud. But the service was attentive and polite and we all got a cracker.

My partner and I have travelled all over Britain this year and stayed at some TOP class hotels in Scotland, Wales, Swindon, London and the North East, but there really is ONE place that makes me feel totally at home and thoroughly relaxed as soon as I walk through their doors and that is the sporting lodge in Middlesbrough, I LOVE EVERYTHING about it there, the rooms, the dining area and the pool, it TRULY IS a home from home. I have stayed there EVERY Friday for the last 3 weeks! The staff are so friendly and helpful and amazing. I love your place and want to live there permanently.

Fantastic Hotel! Ignore all negative comments. Room clean, beds clean. Evening meal tasty. Breakfast spot on. Staff friendly n approachable, JOHN is a credit to the Hotel. Well done Sporting Lodge!

My friend and I came on a national coach trip. We had a very pleasant stay nothing was too much trouble for the staff. And a special mention for John who sorted our room out for us with my friend not being able to walk up the stairs to the room we had been originally given. He came to our rescue a couple more times too, such a lovely young man and a credit to the hotel.

Stayed overnight on business, the rooms are fit for purpose albeit a bit dated design wise (slightly 70s but some people will like that I suppose). Staff were great. The food in the restaurant was a good portion size, but the pasta I had needed more kick, it just tasted like cream. Didn't get to use the gym but it looked great. Thanks for having me.

Stayed here as part of a weekend tour with National Holidays. Both the evening meal and breakfast were of good quality with a reasonable choice and waiting staff were also good. The bed in the room we had was uncomfortable and sloped so I did not sleep very well and the bathroom was also very clean. There was also a wedding reception taking place so could hear music till late into the night. If I happened to stay here again it would be OK but not somewhere I would stay out of choice.

The staff are professional and polite and made my stay pleasant. However, the hotel is 'tired' and needs updating. Did they get a job lot of deep purple paint at a reduced price?! The furniture in my room had seen better days and the carpet had a gap in the middle where it wasn't fitted correctly. I cleaned the windows myself as they were smeared — despite asking for housekeeping to do it. Shower head and control need changing as old and stained. For the price, it's probably ok but don't expect perfection!

It's got a good gym and swimming pool, a good sized bar area and restaurant. I've never stayed in one of their rooms but told from a number of people that they are only basic though they are clean. The tarmac (parking) area around the bar/restaurant is a disgrace, very uneven and full of holes. The food I think could be better, again it's basic for a hotel. The staff seem well mannered and keen to help though you can't always find someone when you need them particularly service at the bar, and none are dressed in a uniform yes they all wear black clothing but not a uniform as such. This place could do extremely better in a number of areas.

Really comfy bed. Slightly firmer than usually soft hotel beds, just perfect for me! Lovely view with wide opening window. Excellent nights sleep. Quiet. Didn't try the food but my sister has been to the restaurant and rated it highly. With a pool and spa, what more could you want?!

Stayed for one night when working in a local academy. Cant comment on the sports facilities as I didn't use or even see them. The room I had was okay, clean enough and had a comfy bed. The bathroom needed sprucing up as that had seen much better days. But overall okay for one night.

Very disappointing. The room was very dirty and the window blind broken. Walls dirty and stained as was duvet cover. Food however was good. Wouldn't stay again.

Nice hotel. Not far from the main road. Very nice cooked breakfast.

Use the gym, friendly staff and decent facilities. Reasonably priced. Could have better Wi-Fi.

Good venue for kids swimming lessons. Pool is just the right size and Mel (teacher) has done a great job helping our son gain confidence in the water.

17th May 2015 just had Sunday carvery, took my 90 year old mum, the staff were great found us a suitable table and one member carried my mums plate from the carvery for her, then brought her a gravy jug, just small gestures but it makes great customer service. Will be back and will recommend to family and friends.

Good facilities and enjoyed the food. Felt let down by the room, the carpet was dirty and found a long hair in the bath. It had only been set up for one occupant instead of two eg one chair and cup etc when there were two of us. Was a bit disappointed.

Came on the 13 sep just over night have a fab time would deffo come a gain.

Nice staff, lovely clean rooms great for a wedding party.

My mam and I went for christmas lunch the food. Was frozen nothing fresh the menu we ordered was not the same the staff were miserable never again it spoilt the day never again.

Would never come again not worth the money.
