An amazing refurbishment which is just beautiful and the food is worth writing home about, having been twice in a month; I can confirm that this is the ideal place to go and have a intimate meal with friends. We were lucky enough to go on a night with a live musician which we enjoyed from the comfort of the low light ambient lounge. Such a warm and friendly atmosphere who make you feel like family.

The food was excellent and the staff made you feel very welcome. Would highly recommend The Smoke House for any occasion.

Peaky Blinders New Years eve was a really great idea but unfortunately failed to hit the mark, lack of atmosphere, not enough decorating that was associated to series, probably not enough advertisement, lack of numbers that went, thought music would have been to do with Peaky Blinders as lots of great trax played in series.
food wasn't great for price, fruit crumble nearly broke my teeth as very hard large pieces of what should have been crumble but more like stone pieces, drinks were expensive! bar staff not trained in the simplest task of making drinks … had problem manning bar properly during evening. Just so disappointed with evening so ended up going to another venue. — mit Peter Cranston.

Stayed for a Fri, Sat & Sun and the staff were very helpful at all times, we had a family room which was excellent. The only downside was the family room windows had no child locks (we were on the second floor), apart from that a great stay and would stay again for sure.

This place rocks, they have taken a clapped out Hotel & turned it into something good. Rooms are lovely with very comfortable beds. Nice tea & coffee in the room. Good TV & Wi-Fi. Front if house staff lovely & the night porter is great. Nice food & great bar. If you are thinking of booking, just press the button and book you won’t be sorryZ.

Nice hotel and location but dinner and breakfast service let it down. Lights went out one night and were out for nearly 20 minutes. Bill wrong twice too.

Very pleasantly surprised. Lovely décor, excellent business lunch, best burger and chips I've had in ages and colleagues had great meals as well. Fab service as well.

The rooms were great, breakfast was served quickly and tasted wonderful. Great impression of England from getting there with their nice open arms. We went while they were restoring the hotel, but they somehow still managed to make the place open and welcoming. A good place for personal space, and the hotels bar or the many nearby in town allow for meeting new people and friends or having a romantic dinner.

The old charm is now being spiced up again. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast very tasty as well as classic British.

Very impressed… clean, spacious, modern room. Friendly receptionists and fantastic breakfast. Close to newbury centre and even race course is within walking distance. Would highly recommend a stay at The Chequers Hotel and will definitely be returning. Excellent value for money.

If you like the stay in an old hystorical building that's not well maintained go for it. Poor cleaning services. No variety at the breakfast. Expensive for the services delivered. Changed my room because of cleaning problems only to receive one worst than the first.

Lovely staff, great location right in the city center, good prices. Special thanks to Emma for doing the impossible in getting us a taxi to get to the airport in time. Would recommend any time!

Locations is great in the centre but the rooms are a little outdated and ones out the back are awful.

This is a nice local pub in Thatcham. The drinks are reasonable and they have a few local breweries on tap. Pub quiz is on a Monday for teams of 6, with a cash prize.

Great hotel. Stag aren't bad a couple are great. Receptionist well one of them should get another job. Hot water the water from the sink tap you could make a cuppa with. Hot water from the bath tap like warm ideal for a shower. I used the kettle to transfer hot water from the sink to the bath! I was told that the hotel will be going through a make over soon. There was no draft beer for 2 days something wrong with the pumps. I have stayed at the hotel once a year for the last 6 years and it as gone down hill slightly.

Staff were really friendly and helpful. Overall the hotel was nice but as it's an older building it could do with updating. The latch to one of the windows was broken and we were 3 floors up. As I had children they were good enough to move us. Breakfast was lovely and the hotel was very close to a really nice shopping centre and bars and restaurants.

It's lovely staff are friendly and very helpful. Only downside was there was no lift n with a baby n bags it's tough going up 4 flights of stairs.

For the price and location, it was very good. Bed not very comfortable and room was small and very hot.

Friendly staff. Good standard of room. Not the usual corporate place, but charming and tastefully decorated. Breakfast is good. Free parking and free Wi-Fi.

Good for the price with parking and central location. Noise from corridor carries into room a bit and amenities need updating but functiinal.

Excellent food. Their Sunday roasts are amazing value for money. Would definately recommend.

Nice and homely hotel. The food in the restaurant was great and the service was also good. The only thing I would say needs improving was the guy on the check in desk. I felt that when I arrived it was an issue to check me in. A smile goes a long way to.

Great place for meetings but parking is sometimes limited. Great views and comfy environment.

The staff were lovely, but the hotel is a listed building and there are numerous stairs and firedoors to get through before you get to specific rooms. Just stayed for an overnight stay. This hotel is in the centre of Newbury which is great. The room was comfortable and clean.

We recently just had our wedding reception at the chequers hotel and we were over the moon with everything, the help and support we got from Sophie and her team was just out standing. I stayed overnight at the chequers hotel in Newbury's center (UK). The hotel is very conveniently located, the staff is very courteous, the rooms are clean, and the fare is reasonable.

Lovely place but could do with a few upgrades.

Considering price, location, services and quality, I have to say, that this hotel is expensive and provides really bad quality. Rooms are smelly, stairs are noisy. Breakfast is very limited. The only pro I can say, is the location. It is in the centre of the city, which makes it very convinient.

Really good hotel with friendly staff. Easy to find. Free parking on site. Very convenient for town centre. Would stay here again.

Stayed in the bridal suite and we had a lovely night lovely room done up well. I would defiantly stay in that suite again. Good value for money also. X.

Yes, it's a little run down, but for a relatively cheap town centre hotel it's alright. Stayed 4 nights on 3 occasions so far. Haven't tried the food, too many good places to eat nearby.

Good value for money, not a top range hotel but good for short stay.
