Very nice hotel. Older amenities but still very comfortable. Close to great food. Very polite staff.

Fairly standard hotel located in a nice area of Hilo. While the location is nice and quiet as it is separated from town and nearby Liliuokalani Park, getting to town can be a bit difficult if you aren't renting a car.

This quaint hotel is centrally located making it easy to travel around Hilo. The rooms could do with a bit of updating, but in Hawaii, the goal is not too be in the hotel room the entire trip. The staff is friendly, the rooms are can and the view is nice.

This hotel is not the nicest visually by many people's standards, but I think it's amazing. It has a kind of laid-back, classic architecture, with tropical plants and flowers everywhere and quiet ukulele music playing in the lobby. The whole place is just charming. The receptionists were friendly, it's near the ocean, and there's coffee in the morning.

Old and run down. It looks like they are trying to restore the hotel, while guests are still in it. The staff are very friendly. In saying this Hilo is a little run down. So it might be relatively okay.

I had super poor experience living there. At the 1st night I got there, there was no parking onsite available. The hotel told me to park on the street. I had to take a 5 mins walk from my car to the hotel with all my luggage while it was dark and raining outside. After checking in, I found the room was pretty noisy with sounds of frogs. The windows of the room could not be closed seamlessly so the sounds could not be isolated. And there was one door that connected to the room next to mine and I could clearly hear the people talk and TV coming from that room. It was a hard time for me to fall in sleep during that night.

Well I mean it's a hotel. You get what you pay for, right? It's cheap. Like it's not terrible by any means, just old. Everything works fine, just old. Doors to outside could use se grease and maybe some new slides and tracks, but they open. My only complaint is that I reserved a room at least a month out, requested 2 beds, got here, and only got the 1 bed. They say requests depend on availability. Not sure if I totally understand that because why am I reserving a room then? But it's a decent hotel otherwise. Like most other reviews say, they need to invest in maintenance but nothing worth turning away for.

Amenities are basic, but the atmosphere is relaxed and the rooms have a homey feel.

Convient location, sevice is good, facilities dated and could use some work.

Ocean view room was beautiful. Go to sleep hearing the ocean, n get up to the sounds of the ocean… absolutely loved it. Very serene.

One of the last locally owner hotels. This location closes on February 1, 2016. Very Sad.

It's a ok place to saty. Pluses for close restaurants.

Staff are phenomenal! Our tour was unbelievable and Ryan (pilot) was hilarious and superb! We got some amazing shots of lava and the falls. Highly recommended!

Well we just stayed there, and there is no free breakfast, they told us because it was free we did not miss out on anything? Reason we booked was for this and cheap. We asked for a room with kitchenette but none available. We were told that our room could not power a toaster. The frogs in the moat that surrounded the units barked untill dawn but we were able to bear that. The whole place smelt damp and uninviting. The usual air-conditioning Mac truck sounding was expected so we left it off and opened the windows to the frog ruckus. The walls were very thin and we could hear every toilet flush and bedroom escapades of the couples next door, boy they could giggle. Honestly looks like Uncle billys bit tired and lacking funds to renovate. Having said all that we went in eyes open and from other reviews we knew what to expect but still hoping our experience would be better than the others. The front desk staff were wonderful and helped us book tours and gave good general information, really felt they were holding it all together. Would I stay again.?. No. Ps dont feed the cats that come into the lobby.

Friendly night staff. Very reasonable prices compared to surrounding hotels.

Perfect place. One of the best food in town. Koki music amazing all over hotel. Koki is a frog and sound like surrounded sounds effects. I loved.

We had a wonderful time at Billys place. I read a review a few below that describes our attitude to a tee. Yes, it isn't a plastic hotel, yes, it's older, yes, the nature abounds. I loved the review the guy posted and would like to add that their restaurant is fantastic and the band's they have in there are real Hawaiian. We will stay at Billys on our next trip to Hawaii. Oh, and the Hilo side blows the Kona side away in beauty.

I live in Hawaii and stayed one night prior to a trip off island. I had stayed at the Kona location several times while working there, but Hilo was a first. I had requested an early check in at booking reservation. Although my room wasn't ready when I arrived, the girl at the front desk arranged to have my gear stored in a secure location. When I returned an hour later my room was ready and my luggage was there safe and secure. She also arranged to have a taxi pick me up very early morning on Christmas day. The cab arrived as scheduled. The rooms are basic but comfortable. Some of the staff were taking meal breaks in public areas, which I don't agree with. But, it's not a problem. A good location for the price. Staff consistency seems to be a problem, and the experience of the guest could vary depending on who's on duty. Overall a nice Hilo hotel.

Horrible service at Unlce Billys. Shame that I have to write horrible reviews going forward. There is this horrible worker named Terry who works at the front desk. I came to have my complimentary breakfeast and she felt the need to degrade me that morning. I could have had my partner pay for a nicer hotel but thought that I could help the local businesses. Well Terry said she was happy to "made me feel like nothing". She moved my traditional blanket from my country and harassed me non stop about my room key. I have traveled to many placed and this is far from the aloha spirit. She made me feel like I was paying for her ill treatment. It might be time to clean up house if you want to continue your work in the tourist industry. I am a well educated and worldly woman and don't need your staff making me feel any different. I will always remember her as Terry Scary. Just because she hates her job does not mean she can make PAYING customers feel at her level.

It has been years since I've stayed here. The frogs kept me up all night and then early in the morning the birds were so very load. If you like the "back to nature" type of thing rather then the fake plush places this is for you. As far as me, well I could have done with more sound proofing. It was wonderful hearing and see all the wildlife, but it would have been much better if closing the door would tone down the noises so I could sleep.

I stayed here eight years ago and it was simple and clean. Not this time (Jan. 2014). The ceiling over the bathtub in our room (136) caved into the tub. We had to relocate to another room in the middle of the night. The staff in the morning was more concerned about getting the original keys and our money than apologizing for such a terrible stay. The hotel is run-down, none of the gardens are kept up, our room was dirty and the staff in the morning could care less. Don't stay here.

Alright, so I travel a lot, it's part of my job. My company pays and schedules the hotels, so they are always looking for the cheapest place around. When I wandered into this place? Man, was I happy. Yes, the building /is/ on the rundown side. Yes, the noise from the coqui frogs is loud at night. The western half of the building has no elevator. If you need an elevator to your room, make sure you request it. If you can't sleep with the sound of nature going on, this might not be your place. If you're a stuck up snob who can't take some cracked paint, just please go shoot yourself. It's beautiful here. Gorgeous. The koi in the garden play with the ducks, the banyan trees sway, little geckos crawl up the side of drain pipes. The room I got, and the rooms the rest of my team's 38 employees got, where all clean and nicely kept (if yes, they were run down. ) But the slight run-downedness of the establishment. Well. Heck, it's an asset. I hope they don't fix a thing. Water runs, is hot or cold as I need it, the air conditioner works, my cooktop puts out good heat and the fridge keeps things frosty cold. They air smells beautiful, and I just want to sit here and enjoy the world. If you're looking for a resort with pillowtop beds and gold lined toilets, try Waikiki. If you're looking for a giant tourist trap where every store wants to sell you overpriced knickknacks, go to Kona.

All these people complaining should have stayed out of hilo. Anyone who does their homework knows that hilo is the rainy side of the island. Hilo is where you go when you want to see what hawaii is really like. Hilo is where you hang out with the hawaiian locals. You spoiled tourists should go hang out in kona. I stayed in uncle billy's for a week waiting for my house to be ready and it wasn't that bad. The people were friendly and fun to be around. I had too many places to go and things to see to cry about the hotel. As long as the staff cares it works for me.
