Friendly & helpful staff! Beautiful location!

Hotel was nice but main dining left much to be desired. Salmon was way overcooked. So dry it could not be eaten. Fries were cold. Server asked about food before we had a bite. Never came back. It was not busy. Hostess asked about our meal and we explained the overcooked salmon. She said she would take care of us. Our bill came, no adjustment. Mentioned it to her, and she said she would fix. She came back with a 10% discount. 2.00 off a 22.99 meal that could not be eaten! Insulting at best!

Beautiful scenery, lovely eclectic towns and super nice people. Highly recommend the “the Sawmill” for breakfast and “Hellbender Burritos” for lunch and the “Purple Fiddle” for live entertainment.

Great food Friendly Staff — One negative made my stay less than perfect. The commodes in the suite restrooms are entirely too small. They are unusable by an average or larger sized person. One would think in this day and time taller and elongated toilets would be standard in all hotels.

This was our second visit to the resort, 2/2022. We enjoyed our first visit enough (2/2021) that we came back, thinking that the issues we experienced were a fluke. First let's address the indoor swimming pools. I don't know what chemicals they're using but it's enough to cause physical reactions out of everyone in the room (happened on both of our trips! ). Eyes burning, coughing, etc… Everyone in the hot tub was sitting up out of it because getting too close to the water caused reactions. I asked the pool attendant why and he gave some story about it being automatic and the weekend and they didn't have control over it and that I must be "one of the lucky ones" for experiencing a reaction. Our entire party of 6 felt uncomfortable in the pool area. Cough, cough. After we made our cabin reservation, we decided to add an additional night to stay and watch the Super Bowl. They didn't have a reservation available for another night in our cabin but set us up with a different cabin that we'd move to for our last night. We were told that we'd be the first cabin cleaned so we could get into the new one asap and to check-in after 10am to see if it would be ready. All sounded good to us and we appreciated their flexibility. But I guess their communication is not really organized. When we arrived, we checked in and realized our cabin had no phone, internet, tv. This was not communicated to us at check-in.

Nice restaurant! We enjoyed the hot tub. Saw lots of deer. Very nice.

Honestly the resort itself is great and family friendly. Staff is 50/50 we’ve had some very rude staff, but also overly helpful staff (kind of like anywhere). Definitely recommend, the price is a steal for what they offer both off the slopes and on! Will be back again!

They have wonderful food. And a few wonderful staff. But I would not suggest this a place to work! Horrible horrible work environment.

We just stopped there for dinner but after seeing everything they have to offer would love to come back and actually stay several nights! We ate at the Hickory Dining Room on Monday and Wednesday, the food was delicious especially after hiking 13 miles in Dolly Sods on Monday and 6 miles on North Fork Mountain on Wednesday! The people working at the restaurant and gift shop very nice.

Great place for outdoorsman and women.

Stayed here last week and absolutely loved it! We were first time visitors and will definitely be going back. We enjoyed driving in the park in the late afternoon looking for deer. The room was great and the staff was super nice!

An amazing place to visit. I’ve lived nearby for 20 yrs and didn’t know till just a few years ago about this hotel-resort. If you haven’t been to main lodge. GO what are u waiting for. The gift shop is HUGE!

The trap shooting was a great experience for the first timer. Jim made it seem easy and fun. Highly recommend it.

Beautiful place. Mostly new as they’ve built onto and renovated it over the years. Lots of hiking trails, golf course nearby, plenty of parking, comfortable seating, elegant rooms, very nice restaurant inside, got a big pool, an arcade, and a playground outside for kids. It’s also a conference center so it’s good for company retreats or big events like parties or weddings. It sits within the state park so lots of wildlife to be seen. There are cabins for rent nearby as well if you want to be closer to nature and if so you won’t be disappointed.

Loved staying at the Lodge a few years ago! Friendly people, nice room and great food!

We have been camping at Canaan Resort for several years and have always had a wonderful time. This year was no exception, however our camping reservations were not what we had expected. We sent our reservations in for two camp sites in February. We always write in two sites at each campground for our first, second and third picks, both sites together. When we arrived to check-in this year, Paula and Jared were happy to help us with our “chosen” sites. One site was at campground 1, site 6 and the other was at campground 3, site 24. Obviously we were outraged. We also found out that the people who were at the site we had put on our early reservation had sent their reservation in June! We wanted to speak with the manager, Dave, who wasn’t extremely helpful, however Paula wanted to make sure she was doing the right thing by informing him of a switch she was going to do so that we would have sites together. Both Paula and Jared receive very high praise for a job well done in handling this situation and many others as we heard throughout the campgrounds last weekend. It is sad to have such a beautiful Campground and resort only to be undermined by bad management. Please look into how reservations are handled in the future. Site specific sites and online reservations may not be everyone’s choice, however I think it would take the hassle off those who are there to do the best they can with what has been handed to them when they had nothing to with the reservations in the first place.

My visits to Canaan Valley started back in the 1980's. Stayed in the old lodge system several times and had good experiences. I have stayed in the new Canaan Lodge 3 times now. The first was August 2014, and I was amazed at how nice it was. The second time was for a work conference in April 2017. The third was this past weekend August 31-Sept 2, 2018. Every time I have been there the place has been awesome, the staff has been awesome and friendly, food has been excellent. I love the scenery there. Love sitting on the Veranda at night and relaxing. I have taken some awesome pictures. Rode the ski lift this past weekend, the last time was July of 2000. The views from the top are awesome and the views from the kite surfing area are breathtaking. Canaan is a good place to hike the trails or a relaxing walk along the road to the golf course. Looking forward to future visits.

The resort was nice and had a lot of options for dinner. They no longer had any specialty cocktails but had not removed them from the online menus which led to a slight confusion. The room was very nice and spacious and the staff was very friendly. The beds were comfortable as hotel beds go.

Wild and wonderful! This is truly Heaven on Earth. Well maintained, friendly people, beautiful views. I come here year round and the best part of every visit is that nothing changes. Peace and quiet and nature.

Beautiful and remote, peaceful and unique, Well — managed and a remarkable value. Everything you want in a vacation getaway, but within a 1/2 day drive of Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and many other eastern US cities. Hiking in Dolly sods, a geological wonder. Skiing and snowshoeing. Camping or a luxury lodge experience. It's all here. I started coming to this place in 1979 and just came home from another long weekend in this high mountain (by Eastern standards) paradise. Come quickly, before they build a freeway to it and turn it into another Vail.

We only had one full day here and loved every minute of it! We spent the day geocaching and exploring the trails. We weren't able to find them all but it was still worth every second! The scenery was amazing and the staff at the ressort was very friendly! We will definitely be staying here again!

This was our second time at this resort. We found our room to be extremely clean and the whole resort staff to be very friendly and helpful. Ate supper and breakfast in their restaurant and found the food to be delicious. We traveled from Ohio on our motorcycle and really loved the surrounding roads for travel. We will definitely be returning and would highly recommend our friends for future visits.

We stayed in a 4 bedroom cabin and have done so for the past 4 years. We absolutely love coming out here and enjoy the quietness and seclusion. The resort pool is awesome! We usually stay in the same cabin every year and were pleasantly surprised by the addition of Wifi and satellite TV. Bathrooms could use some cosmetic updates and better maintenance. Bathroom fan did not work. Overall though, we enjoyed our stay and will continue to come back every year.

Beautiful resort, family-friendly and clean. Nice room with comfortable beds and incredible views. Hickory Room breakfast buffet was very good with prompt service by pleasant and courteous employees. Gift shop and neighboring cafe were also clean and staffed with very friendly people. Cafe had several tasty food choices and desserts at surprisingly reasonable prices. Gift shop had an extremely nice selection also with good prices. Will definitely be back and highly recommend to family and friends!

We had a very nice stay here. Room was clean and comfortable, very spacious. Stayed in room 349 and the lady working that floor was just great. After reading different reviews I must say I didn't encounter any of these problems. All staff was more than friendly, even outside working in cold winds for our dinner they still had a smile on their face. We were only here a weekend but I think I stayed long enough to be able to say I would most definitely come back. Everywhere we went, it was beautiful scenic roads and the wildlife is amazing. We arrived around midnight and two out of three deer walked up to the truck and let me pet them. I have nothing bad to say about this place. Thank you for a great time this weekend.

We stayed in 4 cabins for our family reunion along with mice and spiders and a less than fully stocked kitchen. Great price, great water pressure for showers, fun parks and pool. Just think of it as rustic camping rather than woodsy hotel.

My wife and I have always loved the mountains and Canaan is that lovely mix of amenity with rural West 'By Gawd' Virginia. This is where we honeymooned and return to escape on vacation. Plenty to do summer and winter, but drop dead gorgeous when the leaves turn fall. WVA does a fantastic job with maintaining the park itself and supporting facilities with a strong and welcoming community. If you love the mountains, you will love Canaan.

We stayed at the campground. We love the secluded sites. Brought two of the grandchildren with us. They had a wonderful time, except for the rain. Thank goodness for the indoor pool.

Great resort! It was a much needed break from the heat of Arizona. We were even treated to fog in the morning.

The resort ski lift is a great day activity! You can go up the mountain and take a hike out to Bald Knob. Great way to spend a day. Closes early, so make sure to get there before they stop selling tickets around 3.

The park is simply beautiful. So many great hiking and sightseeing opportunities for any skill level. The golf course looked extremely well maintained as did all of the other amenities in the park. Though I did not stay in the lodge, friends have told me it is really nice. So many trails going through the open meadows and following the Blackwater River. You owe it to yourself to go!

The resort was nice but we were disappointed by the service. We paid 300 Canadian a night and we had to bring in our towels everyday to the front desk. There were 7 of us. We had to pick up garbage bags daily and dish towels. The kitchen had below average cookware. The pans were terrible to cook with, except one. There was one sharp knife and few extras such as tongs, extra spatulas and some quality cutting knives. We also had no washer and dryer in the cottage, we had to pay for it at the hotel and we had a fireplace but we had to pay for a bundle of wood. The place was beautiful, the deer were plentiful, but the Blackwater falls resort cottage had a gas fireplace, washer and dryer but the kitchen cookware was the same.

Nice place to spend your weekend, or just an afternoon during your free time. It has a beautiful views, good food. And during winter, why not to go ice-skating in the outside hall. You can rent ice skates and enjoy yourself. If you get cold you can just come inside and warm up next to the fire pit.

Fantastic facility! Recently remodeled. Restaurants include a cafe for quick sandwiches or coffee, a full service pub with a fireplace near the ski slopes, and a sit-down restaurant in the main lodge. Best ski slopes around for beginner's level. Also has an ice-skating rink, plenty of trails for hiking, biking, picnicking, and bird-watching during the warmer seasons. Cabins are pet-friendly for Fido. Rates are a little steep, but worth the price.

Very friendly staff. Nice clean rooms and bathrooms. It was a quiet place. Nice view. Close to ski area (it was very important since we went there for skiing). They need to update pool / jacuzzi / saunas / shower / gym area with nice towel service. Lack of restaurants choices on the property. If you are still sleeping or put "don't disturb" hang by the door when housekeepers comes, they won't clean your room unless you personally ask at the front desk later. They have a lot of unused conference rooms / spaces. It will be nice to have some complementary coffee or / and cookies at the lobby. Overall we had a very nice stay for a state operated facility. Highly recommended if you are looking for relaxing and nice family get away.

We went tubing together and had a great experience. All of the employees were great. The front desk employee was great. She was full of energy and made the experience even better. The tubes were great and the run down the hill was smooth and fast. It was worth every penny and we will go back in the future.

We love this place! Very comfortable in a beautiful setting. Plenty of room in the cabin. Nice and clean too! Fully equipped, really! Comfortable beds! Called Maintenance as we could not figure out the tv, and “Kenny” came right out! Super guy and a fast response even at night! Great place for old folks like us to walk or great family place for kids to play as well. Nice easy trails. Fire pits are huge off the back deck. We love this place! The Kee Family.

The view of the mountains from our room was beautiful.

The lodge at the resort has been newly renovated and is great for conferences or family get-togethers. The views of the mountains are incredible. Cell reception is pretty limited given the location, but Wi-Fi is provided in the lodge. Cabins are also available in the park, but do not have air conditioning. If you have an event here, be warned that you will be somewhat disappointed. The catered food was very expensive for the low quality, and the chairs were all stained and some were even broken.

Well breakfast isn't included. All in all pretty nice place. I think it's run by the state parks or something like that. They have a indoor and outdoor pool. It has really bad cell phone reception and seems like they could extend their Wi-Fi to beyond just inside the hotel.

The main lodge has everything you would need. The surrounding area has many recreational activities available such as, hiking, horseback riding, rafting, biking, skeet shooting, rock wall, gym, art galleries, antique stores, and other crafts. You can camp and enjoy the wilderness. Deer and other wildlife are present and visible on morning and evening drives.

Conference rooms were nice, weird noise coming from the sound system. Food was good. Overall great learning environment.

Nice rooms and common areas after the renovation. Great Wi-Fi; 10 mbs down, 20 up. Rooms have a mini fridge and a microwave. Balconies are small. Cafe closes early (8 p. M. ), so plan accordingly for late arrival. The grounds need some work, but it is a state park…

The slopes were great! Even when it got a bit crowded, the staff was super nice and kept everything orderly and moving quickly. I would definitely recommend it.

Our stay was great even if the weather was anything but winter-like. Conference rooms were very large but sound and views were good anywhere I sat. All the meals were very good. The indoor pool was nice. Everything was clean. The remodeled rooms were perfect and the atmosphere was nice and quiet when we wanted it to be. Even without the snow, the views were beautiful. I will definitely return.

This place is so fun. The rooms are big enough for anything and there are many other places to go if the first thing u thought u would go to has been canceled like horse back. The food is nice but mostly hamburgers and sandwiches for lunch and an all u can eat breakfast. Many things to buy but some prices are higher but fun :D.
