Lots of potential here! Great location, but rooms are tiny, shower kind of gross, and bedding had stains (thankfully I brought my own blanket and pillow). If the owners invested a little money to make repairs and updates, this could be a nice little motel on the ocean. As is, I would not stay here again though.

Yes we liked that it was dog friendly and on the beach, but my gosh was it filthy! I’m a bit of a germ-a-phob so this place was a nightmare. The towels were stained-there were flies everywhere-dog hairs all over the floors-and all around dirty. Every time we opened our door at least 3 flies came in. The bedrooms don’t cool down so they provide a tower fans that helped a bit. And cigarette butts everywhere on the property. I can’t recommend and will not be back.

We made reservations but canceled after we called with a question and Joyce (the woman who answered the phone) was rude. She mocked and made fun of the way my husband talked then hung up. When we called back she continued to be rude, so we just canceled our reservations. We ended up somewhere else nicer and cheaper, where we actually added 2 extra nights.

Room was nasty over all! Floors turned the bottom of our feet black. I got a hand towel damp and wiped a spot on the floor and it turned the towel BLACK with grime! Door knobs are loose. The couch cousins are tore slam up and don't even got with the couch, plus one cushion is flipped with the zipper out to "hide" damage to the cusion. Only the living room is cool, bedrooms are about 80°+. Booked for 4 nights at a little over $1200 with pets included, get here and they charged me an additional $30 a night, definitely wasn't expecting to pay an additional $120 plus tax. Over all, was definitely not what I was expecting for an "upgraded motel" that cost me the price of a beach house for a week. Parking is AWFUL, especially with people who do not know how to park. Had to have my husband move the vehicle to get my kids in and out without damaging. Y doors or another vehicle. Will NOT book again. Only plus is, its on the beach and has a pool.

Right on the beach, nice pool, the young lady at front desk very nice and helpful.

Haven't been able to make it there lately but, pet friendly, great staff.

I recommend the colonial inn bc it’s so close to the beach. The pool is awesome! It’s my favorite place to be. Family and pet friendly. The staff are the nicest people I have ever met. Lana and Anke are amazing! We always meet new people in our vacations and that’s half the fun. Great restaurants within walking distance. The pier is right next door. Live bands at night. I’ll never go to nags head and not stay at colonial inn.
See you all next year!

Perfect location, friendly staff, cold rooms, made for an awesome beach trip!

Very nice hotel, seems to have been renovated recently and it's also dog friendly which is great. The only bad thing so far is yes they are dog friendly but they have nowhere for the pups to potty… have to walk around for awhile before you can find somewhere for them to go.

Been staying there for over 50 yrs. Great location, nice people, really nice rooms & cleaning service. I call it my 2nd home xxx.

Great little place to stay at an affordable price. There are some minor cosmetic issues but it makes up for it by providing cookwear for guests and small kitchenette. Perfect distance to beach and right next to the fishing pier. Parking lot is a bit cramped.

Today is our 3rd day here, I have been to the office a number of times, I told them our bed frame bent and our cable TV is out and nobody gives a damn. I guess when you pay for 9 nights in advance they already have your money and could care less about if you are happy. We have stayed here before but will never come back.

The staff was one of the kindest, most polite and passionate group of people I have ever met. They are the only reason this review is even getting more than one star. Keep them as long as you can because they really care about your clientele. Upon arrival, there was no toilet paper in the bathroom, at all. The beds appeared to be ruffled which made us all eerie of if the sheets had actually been cleaned. Our AC unit was broken, and the first night of our stay it was hotter inside, than outside. I attempted to open the window, but there wasn't even a screen so I obviously was no longer comfortable sleeping with it open. They did however replace the AC the next day. With no apologies, or discounts for us literally sweating in our sleep all the prior night. There was a "late night" maintenance number to call for help after office hours, which no one answered on multiple attempts hence why we had no help until the next day. Overall, WAY too expensive for what they offer. The ONLY decent things about this was the location, and very nice pool and staff. The room was ran down (we stayed in the two bedroom "apartment"), outlets were broken, broken furniture, and broken curtains. The fridge did not keep temperature, and a number of awful complaints for this place. The pictures from their site are very deceiving and seem to have been taken from the first year this place was up and running.

One of the shabbiest places I’ve stayed at in years. I could put up with the smelly carpets, the broken furniture, the scorch marks on the wall next to the tiny, wonky stove. The bed is hard as a rock. But the kicker was when I went to take a bath and there was no way to stop the tub drain. No stopper mechanism, no rubber stopper, and not even a bit of duct tape at the front desk. Nothing. SCRATCH THAT — the WORST part is the EXPLODING STOVE! Using the cook stove is taking your life in your hands! The burners sit there clicking and refusing to light until WHOOM! FIREBALL! Really really REALLY UNSAFE! For $200 I expected at least Motel 6 quality. This is just depressing. And can’t just check out early and get out of here — no refunds. If they didn’t have this policy I doubt anyone would stay a second night. Just awful.

We absolutely loved loved loved our stay! The staff especially Anke was an absolute joy! The ocean front was amazing and it is right next to nags head pier! The room was a bit dated but, it wasn't a problem. We had a room that was ocean front and had a little view deck as well as a stairway down to the beach! I will be back! Thank you so much for an amazing stay!

Stop there a few weeks ago and stayed for the night, the staff was helpful close to the beach and a nice 8 foot deep pool which was nice after a long days drive. Yes the the build is old but it good shape for its age. Will stay there again on the next trip.

This was my first trip to the outer banks and I really enjoyed my time there. This will be my beach of choice from now on. Great hotel and very friendly staff. Great view of the ocean and pier from the back deck. Nice and quiet.

I chose this place because of it's proximity to the beach and the price. I was a little hesitant to use a place this small with not a lot of extra amenities. But we figured the room was just for sleeping so why not. We checked in today for our week long honeymoon. Driving in we noticed how close it was to everything we want to do. The best part, upon checking in is that she was quick to congratulate us on getting married. We were then given a nice bottle of wine and our room was upgraded. We felt like VIP as soon as we walked through the door. We are presently surprised with how comfortable and clean the room is. Customer service and hospitality seems to be a dieing trend. This place has it by the truck load. This place has earned our business every time we come down. We will also be recommending it to everyone we know.

Had a great time. The rooms are nice and comfortable. The staff is very nice. And its right on the beach!

5 star on nice staff. Loved them! However, the 2 bedroom efficiency apartment was overly warm. The bedrooms don't have air so, they leave you fans. Nice thought. I had to go to Lowe's and buy my own portable a/c ($399 + tax). Then right before bed… the toilet overflows. And, No plunger! Ohhhh and the best part… no office personnel. Nor does anyone answer the phone after 9. Yep! My husband had to go to FoodLion and buy a plunger and cleaning products.

Loved every second of our stay! Very clean rooms with comfy bed and amazing pillows! Staff were super friendly! Anka was the best! Loved her genuine, bubbly personality! The views from the deck were amazing! Yes this is a older place (1950's) but we loved the charm of it and would take that over "new" sterile cookies cuttter builds any day! Will definitely return!

Nice location. Pet friendly and the front desk stuff is very kind. Rooms are small kind of clean but old and the bed is very creepy. We sank in the bed and rolled together because it was extremely soft and overused!

The person at the desk said there was a problem with the room that we had booked and had "upgraded" us. Originally the room had 2 queen beds. So when we were upgraded there was only 1 bed and I slept on a pull out couch. Let me tell you: That had to be the most uncomfortable couch ive ever slept on (And I sleep on them a lot while traveling). You could feel every spring in your back throughout the night. Woke up feeling sore and groggy. Other than that, its cheap. You get what you pay for. Its an old motel, the walls are paper thin, and its small. But, its right on the beach and its cheap. Relatively close to some food too.

Cozy and tidy and laden with charm. Right by the fishing pier and on the beach, it boasts the best staff. They know the area and proffer on-the-money tips about where to eat and what to do. Highly recommended. The rooms are clean and beds quite comfy.

At 2am, freezing temps outside, the power in my room goes out. I noticed, this was not an outage it was just my room. The front desk is also closed after 8pm so I had to sleep in my car. The next morning I was transferred to a just as dirty room. There was also another guest who had his room swapped because his heater/ HVAC went out during the same night. This is an extremely old building that has a lot of issues with the electrity, but is very affordable. Not sure how the prices differ in the summer. P. S. Did I mention some of the rooms look like they belong in twin peaks. Serious upgrades are needed.

This is a great place if you have pets. Room we rented was very big with a kitchen. For pets, at least mine, a quite room is what we look for. This place is on the beach, quiet and reasonable. If your looking for hi end this is not it! If all you need is a clean, big and quiet space on the beach then colonial is it.

My boyfriend and I booked a room for one night. When we walked in the room it smelled like mildew and we immediately noticed how everything seemed to be crammed in and very unclean. I walked out to the car which was right outside the room (that part is nice) and my boyfriend opened up the window to ask me a question and the window would not shut back. There was a large window in the bathroom and the light bulb was burned out as well as a light bulb in the bedroom. The microwave and mini fridge were both dirty and there were cigarette ashes in one of the bedside table drawers. There were stains on the pillowcases and comforter and the heater and ac unit did not work. Thankfully we were able to switch rooms and the only complaint in this room is there was no exhaust fan in the bathroom. Very minor compared to the room we previously had. The saying "You get what you pay for" comes to mind.

This place is so gross it is infested with bugs! bed bugs to be exact. I highly advise nobody to stay here as I will never stay again! Below all the comments saying they experienced the same thing with bed bugs they replied back with “we have a monthly pest control” ummm you can’t get rid of bed bugs unless you burn the mattress and all the sheets. This is disgusting.

Older motel that is right on the beach. We rented a two bedroom apt over Thanksgiving and it was perfect. Very friendly staff, clean and comfortable.

It is a seventies style hotel. I have dust allergies so it was wonderful to go to sleep in a place that wasn't my home and wake up the next day with no problems from them. When we realized we would be late for check-in they were easy to work with. The ocean was so close that you could hear it in the room. With easy access to a pier with a restaurant. The only thing that I found slightly off putting was when we turned on the heat you could tell it had not been on since last winter however the filter itself was clean. All in all it was a great hotel only reason I have it a 3 star is it's age and its not super spacious.

So we were ended up late in arriving and the managers knew and had the room all prepared for us. Great room… we asked for the room to be cleaned before we got since its the of season and my friend has bad allergies… they did a great job! Would love to visit here again!

My husband and I enjoyed our 2 night stay at the Colonial Inn, in Nags Head on October 9, and 10. The room was rather small and so was the bathroom. But we enjoyed being able to go out and walk on the beach. Everything was clean. I do need to mention that the hair dryer in the room we were in, room 31 does not work. I tried to get it to come on, but it would not work.

My daughter booked an efficiency for the weekend and it was infested with roaches. The hotel was accommodating with their refund. ****just an additional comment. We do have pictures of the roaches in the bathroom, behind the refrigerator and in the cabinets…

Had a great time. Rooms are small and dated a bit. Staff was helpful on everything we needed. We had a Kitchen and it was pretty well stocked. Our main downfall was pool was never open. Maybe getting it ready for Irma.

THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTINGGGG! There's absolutely nothing good about this place. It stinks & it's way outdated! IT HAS FREAKING COCKROACHES & OTHER DISGUSTIBG BUGS! like how can someone run this motel without bombing for cockroashes or updated it a little! who ever runs this is absolutely disgusting. I will never EVER come back to this horrific place!

We tried to cancel our reservation and was told they couldn't do it because her boss would have her head. Basically they could but, wouldn't. So we drove there and stayed. The room smelled like mold. We booked smoking and they do not have any smoking rooms. They offer free Wi-Fi… that's a joke. Our room was next to the router and got great signal but, after connecting you could barely use it. The drink machine was out of order for weeks as I was told… it just needed to be plugged in. Parking is a nightmare as well. Now for the good. The rooms were surprisingly clean and the staff was very nice. My comforter had stains look like bleach was spilled on it. There is free cable and the Tv has HDMI ports. The pool was cleaned daily and they have nice gas grills that are fairly new. The walk to the beach is literally right behind the dune and you are right next to the pier. 711 is right down the street and there are a few grocery store near by. The kitchen has a stove, microwave, sink, fridge, pots, pans, dishes and silverware.

This is our 4th year staying here. Already booked our room for next year. The rooms are a decent size, bathroom a little small. Reminds me of "Old time Nags Head". Right on the beach, has a pool and the staff is great. The only problem is parking, not full size truck friendly.

We just got home and I'm not usually big on doing ratings, but this team deserves it! I have never encountered such a sweet and professional hotel staff anywhere else! C was absolutely amazing when I called to book the room. I even told her that I felt like I knew her by the time I hung up! The room was large, a little warm at times but that's to be expected in that heat. The pool is great, the location is amazing being feet from the pier and the views are beautiful! This place has definitely won us over! I look forward to returning with my kids because they will love it here! Thank you so much for being so inviting and reasonable with your prices also!

Oceanfront and pet friendly; Wi-Fi doesn't really work, but we should be enjoying the view anyway (and the office manager said we could use their office in case of immediate need). Perfect for a reasonable get away!

One of the cheaper places to stay in Nags Head. The pool is large and there is decent seating around the pool. Staff are very friendly. Housekeeping service is good. Private beach access, very short walk to the beach. Great location, right next to the pier. Rooms are TINY and the bathroom/shower are even smaller. Not enough parking and very tight. Idk how they would accommodate everyone if they were at max capacity.

One star is too many for Colonial Inn. I reserved a room at the Colonial through Orbitz because the location is great and previous reviews only mentioned the décor was outdated, which didn't bother me. But when I checked in I noticed a roach and ants in my room. By the time I noticed bedbugs the office was closed, so naturally I went to a different hotel. When I went back to Colonial the next day to talk to a manager about my experience and to cancel the rest of my reservation with them they were rude, unempathetic, and refused to provide a refund for my stay since I paid up front. I travel to all parts of the country for work and have never been to a place with such uncleanly amenities and horrible service. I would HIGHLY recommend looking elsewhere if you want a pleasant, bug-free Outer Banks experience.

Very nice quaint hotel. Love that it has beach access right at the back of the hotel.

I was nervous, having read the mixed reviews. So we came prepared with our own bedding, and it helped. Staff and location is excellent — these are very nice hardworking people who try to please. Rooms were superfcially clean, but don't look too close. There was trash under beds, bugs in window sill which housekeeping did not clean despite having window propped open and bugs visible for 4 days/3 nights while were there. Water pressure was very low, water had funky metallic smell, and hot water is variable. Bathroom fixtures were corroded, with both rust and mineral buildup. Our room with 2 queen beds was very tight. My friend's room had a kitchenette and table/chairs, but it smelled so badly of dog I could barely stand the short visits and mostly stayed near the doorway. In order to breathe. She borrowed our lysol, baking soda and Fabreez to help with the odor, but it was overwhelming. My kids said it was the worst place they'd stayed, beating out Motel 6. Pay the extra $20 for a cleaner, more updated room and you will rest better. We will not be returning.

A Living Social stay, that was transferred from the Outer Banks Inn to here, proved to be a nice getaway. A short walk to the ocean and a private deck made it perfect for my boyfriend and me. We were also close to many eateries and shops, so we were not wasting time driving to and fro. Cai at the front desk was very friendly and helpful; we would def stay here again!

We stayed Friday 6/5/2015, for one night on our way down to Hatteras, and honestly we probably should have just slept in the car. The good: The woman at the front desk was welcoming and very kind at check-in, as were all other staff members we encountered, but that is where the good ends. Our room was on the second floor and we were given the wrong keys to our room (apparently the locks were just changed). Once we opened the door we were extremely disappointed with what we saw. The room looked like it hadn't been touched since it was built in the 40s, definitely not like the photos on the website. It looked tired. Half of the light bulbs were burnt out, the mirror in the room had fallen off the wall and was laying on the ground, the bedside table drawers were broken, the comforter had blood on it, the sink was backed up. I could go on, but I'll just post pictures and you can decide for yourself. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Clean rooms. Great staff, they were super helpful and friendly! The ocean views are amazing from the little deck they recently added! Me and my husband sat there after a long day just listening to the ocean. I will go back if I'm ever in the area again!

Stayed here for a spur of the moment getaway last week. Our oceanfront room couldn't have been nicer! Not a huge room but very clean and well maintained. We were here for the view and it was spectacular! The new deck added this year was perfect for sunrise photos and late nights listening to the waves. This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and it was sheer good luck that we chose the Colonial Inn and were able to get such a great room at the last minute. Quiet, picturesque, lovely beach access and the fishing pier next door was a nice bonus. Also extremely impressed that out pet was permitted in our oceanfront room! One thing to be aware of is that all oceanfront rooms are on the second floor so if you have trouble with stairs that could be an issue. But we can't wait to come back!

Stayed here recently for three nights. We arrived after they had closed for the night and they went out of their way to make sure we would still be able to get our room key. It was rainy and cold for almost the whole duration of our stay; thankfully, the room was quite lovely to be stuck in. The staff was also very friendly. All in all, a wonderful place to stay :).

Stayed here March 2015. The staff is very friendly and they will go way out of their way to ensure happy customers. They are dog friendly which was the main reason we checked-in here. One of our party had a mechanical problem with the AC and they promptly moved them late at night and even went above and beyond and comped the rooms for the trouble.

Everyone so nice and room clean and smelled clean. Stayed in unit 2 bed apt. Very satisfied.

My roommate and I stayed at the Colonial Inn again this year. It is a very comfortable place, very clean and well kept. I love the fact that you can put a chair outside of your room and relax. We made reservations for next year when we were checking out. The 4th of July fireworks on the fisherman's pier next door were the best. The Inn had front row seating on the dunes for guests, it is the only time you can do this. The parking is a little dicey, but you just have to be careful. It helps to have a smaller vehicle to maneuver easily, that's actually part of it's charm.

We had an excellent stay at the Colonial Inn. I was nervous, given the quite affordable price for being right on the beach, but everything was awesome; we had a comfortable, clean room right on the dune separating the motel from the beach, things were quiet and peaceful, and the location really couldn't have been better. Thanks for a great stay.

Love it here. Great place to get away. A quaint inn with a history and a beautiful ocean view. Give it a shot.

We stayed at the Colonial Inn from July 21, 2013 until July 25, 2013. The entire staff was frinedly, amd helpful in everyway. It is an older motel, but clean. Does need undating, however we had a clean, but sightly small room. Location right on the beach was great. For what it is, we find it to be a greta bargain. The Colonial Inn is old, but was clean, friendly, on the beach, and very reasonably in their room pricing. And for those of you that are looking for a five star motel for these prices, We say good luck.

Yeah, you can trust internet reviews — we stayed here and we'll tell you straight up. This place is old and run down, but the staff was very friendly and seemed to care about their guests. The bed wasn't very comfy (it had dents in it from being so old) and the other furnishings were old, but it was at least clean. We didn't feel like we needed to worry about bedbugs or anything. We stayed for one night in mid-november when were down to run the OBX half marathon. The room was also 23$ cheaper than the corporate joint up the road (about 20% less) so I guess you get what you pay for. When I need a cheap room next year for the 1/2 marathon, I'll stay there again.
