Just got back from a 7 night stay at The Grassmere Inn in Westhampton. It was one of the best vacations my husband and I have had thanks to owner Peter Kaplan, the friendly/accommodating staff at the Inn and especially, his Eastside Tennis Club with amazing international tennis pros like Karen Hernandez and Yago. Karen is simply the best tennis instructor I've ever worked with, and my husband loved his tough, competitive sessions with Yago and his Nadal-like topspinning groundstrokes. When we weren't on the courts, we went on peaceful, long bike rides on the 16 mile stretch of Dune Road that runs end to end on the beach island. Or we walked around the corner from the Inn to Main Street, with its charming mix of restaurants and shops. Mambo Kitchen, Margarita Grille and the Beach Bakery quickly became our favorite places for lunch, dinner and coffee. We also enjoyed sitting on Grassmere's pretty front porch, just enjoying the sunshine and quiet — a great respite from midtown Manhattan, where we live and work. If you're looking for a Miami Beach or even East Hampton Village experience, then Westhampton and The Grassmere Inn probably won't be "exciting" enough. The Inn is an old, historic structure that obviously takes a lot of love + work to maintain. It's not modern and polished like a Marriott hotel, but is very clean + has comfortable beds, good showers/bathrooms/fresh towels, air conditioning, strong Wifi and a housekeeping staff that will happily follow through on any of your requests. And Westhampton is a quiet place with magnificent, but not too blingy displays of wealth. We'll definitely be going back!
