It is a lovely place and we appreciated the warm greeting.

I would love to recommend this hotel because it was a great location with a spacious room and a friendly front desk staff. But three weeks after my stay, my credit card was charged over $300 and the hotel does not respond to my requests for a receipt for these charges, which they had previously said would be paid by the Holiday Inn Camarillo, which reneged on our reservation and walked us to the hotel in Santa Barbara. Seems this Holiday Inn also doesn't honor its agreements with customers.

On paper, this hotel has everything. It gets an extra star for it's location and friendly staff but otherwise — it's a dump. Expect that if you're on the first floor and your upstairs neighbor is rude enough to do something like walking, you'll be woken up. The windows on the first floor are also completely obstructed so you have zero view. Parking is an additional $16 and the breakfast is a microwaved smorgasbord specifically designed to satisfy no one. Lastly don't expect to sit on the toilet.

Absolutely LOVED THIS PLACE! Stayed here for my Mother's birthday 2 years ago. Really easy access to the strip, with a friendly and inviting enviroment. The rooms are big and the windows open so you can get a breeze. The air conditioning works and the coffee is really good. Parking is easy. I wish I could have stayed there this time around, but they were completely booked. In my opinion, holiday inn express aka hotel Virginia was a wonderful experience and would stay there again.

Great clean hotel. Perfectly located close to state street and the beach. They have bikes available for checkout which is awesome. Their customer service is also amazing and accommodating. My wife and I had to get away for a break and the staff here truly made our stay great and relaxing.

Great location in the middle of town with easy parking. Clean and pretty quiet. The staff is friendly and accomidating. Try to get a room on the 3rd floor if you are not a early riser, the breakfast crowd can get loud and the sound really carries. The 3rd floor has a door the 2nd does not. The building is really old (historic? ), they do not have adjoining rooms which we would have preferred. We would definitely stay here again!

Close to everything, right in the middle of downtown. That is a great pro. The cons… The building is old and it has a very old smell, that bothered me big time. There was a ghost in my room the last night we were there. It caressed my legs and spooked the heck out me and could not go back to sleep. I had non stop goose gumps for 2 hours.

A good place to stay. It is centrally located and very convenient with stores and restaurants nearby. Walking distance to Downtown SB and the beach. The room is slightly outdated and the bed squeeches. Sheets and pillows are comfortable. Parking space is limited especially on long holiday weekend, but they do offer free valet. There is $16 per day fee for parking. Hotel staffs were very friendly and courteous. I would recommend this place for those who are visiting SB.

This hotel was such a pleasant surprise. Located in the heart of Old Town Santa Barbara, it is walking distance from many restaurants and bars. The hotel itself is very cute as it maintains the charms of the hotel it used to be (Hotel Virginia). The rooms are spacious and we'll laid out. The staff is very friendly and attentive. As if this was not enough, Wi-Fi and breakfast are included. 5 stars all the way!

Holiday Inn Express in Santa Barbara is a great place to stay at if you want to hang around State St. You can pretty much walk to any place on State St. From this location! The Inn offers some nice perks like free bike rentals and coupons to nearby restaurants. Parking there per night is $16 (as of April 24, 2018). The customer service is top notch. The staff is very nice and very accommodating. The rooms itself are not anything to get excited about though. This is why the minus 1 star. The rooms are small, clean, and will do for your stay. We spent most of the time out anyways, and the location and staff of the hotel makes this place so valuable. We will definitely stay again if we come visit Santa Barbara!

This is one of the best Holiday Inns I stay at when I travel for my job. The old tile throughout the building, the upstairs porch and the brick in each room makes it very classy. I also really appreciate the amazing gym accommodations that they provide complimentary down the street and the bike rentals too! Also, can’t beat the location right next to the farmers market and all the major bars and ocean.

Come here every New Years. Great rates, clean rooms. The free breakfast is great as well. Staff is nice and friendly.

Rooms were clean and well kept. Staff was friendly and helpful. Location was fantastic. Be warned, though. There is a daily parking fee.

We drove here from Temecula. Wanted to see and help the businesses here after the storm. Called in and booked a room. Asked for some kinda view. We got to our room and saw one window literally opened to a wall and the other was to the back parking lot. Breakfast is absolutely horrible. Their egg selection consists of very fluffy, watered down scrambled eggs and… that's it. They have a machine that "prints" pancakes, almost thinner than their paper plates. Their staff is friendly but I wouldn't recommend staying here. For the same price you have way more options.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Great location. I've seen good selection for breakfast, which is included; but I didn't try it. Wifi is also free, together with tea/coffee and hot chocolate services in the lobby all day. Rooms are clean and in a very good shape, but they're very loud: whether for the noise coming from the street, from the hallway and from the other rooms!

What a great stay we had! The location is everything with this hotel. It's right next to Central, the main drag in downtown Santa Bárbara. The rooms were updated but did need a little more work, specifically the bathroom. However, the service at this location was fantastic! Overall an amazing stay! Would definitely come back.

Breakfast is complimentary, a big perk in this area. Case parking is $16/night. Rooms are very small, but good enough. There was some wear and tear in the room, but nothing that ruined the place. Front desk was nice. Location, right off State Street, was nice, but also fairly far from the beach. I rounded down from 3.5, but I wouldn't NOT recommend this place.

We had a lovely time at this hotel! It is walking distance to the Wharf, Funk Zone, and the shopping mall on State street. We really did not need a vehicle to get anywhere! The room was clean and the service at the front desk, valet, and staff were all wonderful. I do want to note there is no pool at this hotel, but they will give you access to a pool nearby if you are interested. Would stay here again!

It struck me that Holiday Inn Express have taken over an old traditional style hotel in a very prominent position in Santa Barbara. No doubt some modernisation was needed but the result is a charming boutique style hotel with polite and attentive staff. Full marks Holiday Inn Express.

This hotel has a charm about it that is quite unique. The warmth from the front desk and all it's employees is genuine and makes the entire stay so enjoyable. The rooms are comfortable, the decor of the hotel has such character and the location couldn't be more perfect! Coming from someone that manages a hotel as well, I can speak to the level of service of the staff, the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the hotel. If you need a place to stay in Santa Barbara, look NO further. I can tell you that speaking to others that stayed at a multitude of other hotels in the area, I picked the BEST one. Thank you to the team that worked this past weekend. Each and everyone of you made the stay pleasantly memorable.

Long story short — stay somewhere else. The old inns in SB are actually very nice. This place isn't nice and is poorly staffed and operated. We stayed here for one night on a weekend for about $300. We were given a room on the first floor with one kind bed. The room was fine for the most part — nothing fancy but not terrible. The bathroom, however, was pretty gross and smelled like urine. We told the front desk and we we're polite about it, only expecting them to move us to a different room or send someone to clean it. But the desk attendant simply told us she didn't know what to do about it and just kind of stared at us until someone else showed up from the back. They didn't identify themselves as a manager but came to our room to see if it really smelled (I guess). Once in the bathroom she said, "it's not that bad, just let it air out for a while. " We asked if they can send someone to clean it but she said there wasn't any cleaning staff working then (Saturday afternoon). She also said she wasn't a manager and there wasn't a manager working right now either. Then she left. I called the front desk again and they said they were trying to call the manager but they weren't answering. They told me the manager would be there in the morning if I still wanted to talk to then then. We tried to just change hotels but decided it wasn't worth the hassle and extra money. We tried to freshen the air in the bathroom and just use it as little as possible.

Comfy beds and quiet location 1 block from strip. Wish breakfast was better. But hey. Its included as part if your stay.

This hotel is spectacular! It's a beautiful building. The staff is incredibly nice! They have bike you can borrow and it is right in the center of Santa Barbara so you are close to everything. Planning to come again.

Very nice staff and rooms. You cannot even tell this is a budget hotel. Valet was friendly and careful with our cars, and is worth the $16 overnight parking charge especially considering the busy neighborhood. Rooms were spacious and comforting. Great recommendations for food by the front desk, be sure to get a coupon!

Great service attentive staff. I did not like the fact that they charged me $16 Per day for parking! The breakfast was good though!

Staff was friendly and helpful. Many Santa Barbara shops and restaurants within convenient walking distance. Rooms were clean, and complementary breakfast included a decent selection, with coffee available all day.

Historic building. One wall in our room was the original brick. Downtown was so close with shops and restaurants. I'd go back in a minute.

The hotel is located at 1 box from the main street. The parking is limited but the hotel is responsible to place the car somewhere. The breakfast is good.

Great location. My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and perfect for the two of us. The location was fantastic. It's at the end of State Street, right before the bridge to the beach. Close to everything. There is also free breakfast. Would highly recommend.

As I do a lot of business trips to Santa Barbara, I tend to pick nice hotels. Now that it's spring, most of those nice hotels have rates that are higher than my company is willing to pay. So I found this place. I was expecting a generic Holiday Inn experience, but I was pleasantly surprised. Apparently this was originally Hotel Virginia that has the Holiday Inn logo slapped on. That said, this was no generic experience. The place and room has a distinct charm. The staff was friendly. The complimentary breakfast was good. And best of all is the downtown location. Everything is walking distance: downtown, the wharf, the beach. The only downside is parking, as the lot will fill up fast. Although if that happens, they have complimentary valet service.

Such a disappointing stay in early Jan. Have been trying to get response for a month without success so here I am. Heater was broken in the room and it was very cold, lots of noisy people in the foyer and with our room position it sounded like they were standing in our room. Staff at the front desk were great with tips for the town, although were of no assistance with our issues. We were not offered a different room, were told the hotel manager would contact us via phone or email… nothing. Emailed him a number of times to complain… no response. Very poor effort by the team leader and has ensured that my recommendations are that people stay anywhere but here. Small things make a big difference.

Great service the whole stay through in a location you can't beat for a more than reasonable price. Comfortable bed, spacious bathroom, and a contemporary clean feel to everything. The variety at breakfast wasn't stellar but when you're that close to so many great SB restaurants you shouldn't be relying on your hotel for four-star cuisine. You can rent bikes easily at the front desk for cruising down along the beach or to check out the urban wine trail close by. Our one issue was the A/C unit seemed to not be working but an employee showed up promptly after a call to the front desk and explained that the units sometimes malfunctioned when set to their min (sub 50F…), but were fine at 60 or above. This proved accurate. Overall, great stay and I'd absolutely return in the future!

Really well located in Santa Barbara. Nice room, seemed recently refurbished. Nice size. Free breakfast. Really nice stay.

The best of this hotel is its staff. The women who clean your room are instantly accommodating with any request; registration staff is always polite and helpful and the best is Anna and the other 2 women that are there to help you at the breakfast bar of eggs, cereal, breads, juice, coffee and sweet rolls.

Good location, in walking distance of the wharf and many great restaurants. Overall, the hotel was clean and well-maintained, but appears to be avoiding modernization/renovation for historical preservation. In room amenities were fine, including a mini-fridge and USB power outlets on the desk/bedside lamps, but the bed seemed to be a cheap inner-spring model. The Continental breakfast was presented well enough and the serving area kept clean, while the food was what you'd expect for a self-service buffet: fine, not great.

Do not stay at this place, even though it is near all the bars, the customer service is horrible. I booked 2 rooms for 10 tens, and twice we came back to our room just to find out they gave a way our rooms without contacting us only because we didn't stay in them one night during the stay. They also did this to us on New Year Eve when we came back to our room and found out they gave away our room again or double booked it without telling us, and they had nowhere for us to stay. The manager just said sorry.

The hotel is beautiful! The young lady who was working reception when we checked in on Wednesday evening was helpful and very patient. We made good use of the complimentary bikes & enjoyed the free breakfast and central location.

We have stayed here multiple times due to their excellent location and value for the money. They offer a free parking, a Wine Happy Hour and a decent breakfast. The hotel has several tiers so in many cases it is a few steps up to your room. My husband and I are seniors and I have health issues. They put us in a Handicap room on the first floor. It was nicely decorated and offered every amenity. Yes I will definitely stay here when I return to Monterrey.

The room is clean and well appointed. The receptionist Shane was very helpful and pleasant. He sent us to a Hidden gem within walking distance and we had a wonderful dinner. We were pleasantly surprised that there is such a variety of items at breakfast. We will definitely return.

The room was clean and bright, the staff was extremely accommodating and knowledgeable and the breakfast buffet very nice. Surprisingly to me, this was the best hotel stay during our 2 week run down Highway 1. Thanks!

Great place to stay if you like to walk to dinner and be surrounded by all of the great shopping on State street. Just know that it's noisy. Rooms are nice! Great place for a short stay.

Great hotel well situated to all local amenities bars, restaurants, shops, the pier and sea front. Can be a little noisy depending on room allocation but the rooms are large and well presented. Breakfast is typical of the self service buffet style, offering a range of cereals, fresh bread, pastries along with omelette and breakfast sausage. Good range of herbal teas along with a good quality breakfast coffee including decaffeinated. Parking is also available at a cost. The staff are very pleasant and exceptionally helpful in providing information about the Santa Barbara area.

Looking to stay a night in downtown Santa Barbara, on our way back to Hollister, after spending two nights at Hilton hotel and visiting Disneyland, I enquired about room availability, on the evening of April 23, 2015. The young lady at counter very condescendingly, handed me a card with $149.00+tax, written on it! We ended up spending the night at a better more expensive hotel close to the beach. I want the hotel management to be made aware of such uncouth and bad behavior from their front desk staff.

Ok hotel, but scary unhealthy breakfast (it's ok, there are tons of alternatives around) and extremely noisy rooms — you tend to hear every bit of whispering, coughing, talking and snoring of every neighbouring room. Not a terrible place if you bring ear plugs.

After staying for a night there wasn't any problems (except for our TV being new and needing a quick service adjustment) ; however, after stepping into my bath tub the following morning for a shower I noticed that there were no hand rails, shower mats, or even texture to base of the tub. Taking my chances I slipped mid shower, and banged my face on the edge of the tub. Long story short my teeth nearly went through my lip. In a panic I quickly dressed and ran to the front office still bleeding. I explained to the manager Tanner what had happened, and he just stared at me and said no one has ever done that before. He never offered me medical aid (first aid kit gauze or something) or even asked if I was ok so I used their hotel towels instead. Not until I asked him what he was going to do about the situation did he decided to comp us, which I was completely over and I will never stay at a holiday inn express. He said shower mats are a liability is that true.

I give it 4 stars because for what it is, it's excellent at it. It's a business traveler hotel, designed to be adequate accommodations in a great location, and fits the bill smashingly. Reasonably priced, free Wi-Fi, comfortable rooms, good bed, toiletries by Bath and Body Works, Kohler faucets etc etc. Nicely done. Only wish it had a bar in-house, but it's close to many great bars in the area. Long story short, it gets the job done.

The worst hotel I've ever stayed at. I only stayed here one night, but a lot of the hotel needed to be updated. Plus, the hotel was located right in Downtown Santa Barbara, so at night there were a lot of drunk people outside the hotel. For the most part, the rooms were clean, but if you looked under the furniture, there was dust everywhere. Service was fine, and there were a lot of free services.

The hotel is in a perfect location in downtown Santa Barbara and it's a converted older hotel, so there is lots of character. The price is good and Holiday Inn Express always provides breakfast, so good for families. Be aware that this hotel is VERY loud. If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay, this is not it. Rooms are right on a main drag and cars drive by throughout the night. It's also a popular spot for the bar hoppers given it's location and price point. Bars close at 1AM, hotel hallways full of screaming drunks by 2AM.
