Matafonua Lodge is quite simply paradise on earth.
The location is breathtaking, but it is the people who make this place truly extraordinary. The hosts and entire team are incredibly friendly, helpful and hardworking. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and everything they do is delivered with genuine warmth and care.
The whale experiences were spectacular. The guides are knowledgeable, passionate and deeply respectful of the whales. Their priority is always the wellbeing of these magnificent animals, while still doing everything possible to give guests an unforgettable encounter.
It is important to remember that whales are wild animals and, as with nature, nothing is guaranteed. We stayed for 10 days and went out on five whale-swim trips (this was quite extreme compared to others! 3 swims is more the norm). We saw whales every day and were fortunate enough to swim with them on four of those days. Some encounters were brief as the whales passed by, while others lasted longer when they were resting below the surface.
If you expect a whale swim on demand, you may be disappointed. But if you are willing to embrace time on the water— watching whale blows close by and in the distance, seeing tail slaps around you and appreciating the anticipation—then the moments when you finally share the ocean with these incredible creatures are pure joy. It was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life.
