We went on a getaway with my wife and it is a highly recommended place.
PROS: quiet location, with views, friendly atmosphere, good combination of modern elements with traditional, swimming pools, spacious and comfortable rooms, good food
AGAINST: the big fight against us and the reason why, in my case, it doesn't deserve 5 stars, is the service. I explain. Whether it's high season or for whatever reason, the Castell d'Empord has internship agreements with foreign schools, which I think is great (it's a good opportunity for the boys). However, this generated several situations that cannot happen precisely in high season and in a hotel of a certain category such as this:
Cleaning staff who do not speak Spanish or Catalan, which made it difficult to ask for anything; Inexperienced waiters who forgot to bring the letter or put bread, neither spoke Catalan nor Spanish; some chaos in the kitchen, almost 50min waiting for the second course and, of course, when they asked they didn't know how to explain. We understood that it was not the workers' fault and we took it easy, we also went to the English language to make things easier for them. But in any case we believe that it is not the level of service expected for the price paid. A good idea would be to detect the customer's provenance (at least in the restaurant) to assign waiters who can serve them well. (Honestly in life I had to ask for things in English in a hotel in deep Catalonia. )
