Kuzhir is basically the "Wild East" of Siberia, and accommodation largely reflects this; five-star hotels are unheard of. Pushkina 17 is a family-run guesthouse trying to cater mainly for Russian visitors. It is set up more along the lines of a motor camp where guests have their own cabin, but leave the cabin to use an outdoor bathroom. A three-course breakfast is provided in the cafeteria, where cheap meals are also available through the day. There is an urn for you to make your own hot drinks. The cabins will accommodate perhaps eight groups of two or three. However, there is just one bathroom for all, and the only toilet is inside it. There is no separate laundry facility. The interior walls of the cabins are very thin, so that we hear a lot from our neighbours. There are also plenty of openings for draughts — holes in floors and ill-fitting doors — which could be a problem in winter. The cafeteria menu is written only in Russian. One of the family speaks both Chinese and English, but she is here only during the holidays from her language studies. Without her, there is no way to know what food is available. Khuzhir is pretty much it for accommodation on Olkhon Island, so this may be the general standard, but Nikita's homestead is markedly better — and markedly more expensive; it is also a better place from which to arrange excursions, even if you are not staying there as a guest.
