Traveling on a strict budget doesn't mean you have to sacrifice a good night's sleep. Economy hotels (typically 2-3 stars or unrated) provide safe, clean, and private rooms at highly competitive rates.

These places are perfect if you plan on spending your days exploring or working, and just need a reliable basecamp. For even more thrifty options, you might also explore local guest houses or hostels.

When booking economy options, check for:

• Proximity to public transit lines to save on cab fares.
• In-room or lobby Wi-Fi reliability.
