Ruta Alterna Hostel

Carlos the host was wondering and very attentive. The hostel had plenty of shared areas to sit in, including where we had breakfast. There was a well equipped kitchen also with a table and a couple of chairs. We had the double bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. The bathroom was large with hooks for towels and wash bags. The bedroom was a perfect size with shelves for storing clothes etc, bin, bedside tables and lamps. The flat screen television had cable and he had already signed into the Netflix account for us, although we didn't need this. Breakfasts were different every day, super delicious and very filling.
Carlos is also a tour guide and took us on some wonderful, specifically designed and personal tours, cheaper than if we had gone elsewhere. He gave us loads of advice and help, including accompanying me to a dentist. He even looked after us for the day at the city carnival. Carlos and his family were wondering hosts, including the very friendly dogs that live with his parents next door. We booked for 4 nights and stayed over a week. Thank you Carlos.

Carlos the owner is very kind and does a great job with the hostel. The rooms are cosy, spacious and clean and the beds are very comfortable. He is willing to help with recommendations or any questions you may have. Thank you Carlos :)

I slept in a dorm and the beds are very comfortable, the room and facilities are just perfect. The breakfast is deliciois and it is easy to meet other travelers.
The host is the best, super friendly, he knows a lot about the area and helped me with my questions and he also organized my journey to Chachapoyas. Big recommendation!

Small and intimate hostel located in the quiet area of Cajamarca, yet it is only 15 minute walk to central. The property is always clean and the beds are comfortable. Has well equipped kitchen for cooking, and common area to socialise with fellow travellers. The manager Carlos is a legend, who is always willing to help to make your stay in the hostal and in Cajamarca as comfortable as possible. Decent breakfast. Stayed for 6 nights only wished I could have stayed longer.

Spectacular owner, amazing facility, fantastic vibe. We originally booked two nights, but stayed for four given how amazing the ambiance, Carlos, and the dogs were! You'll be glad you stayed here.

We couldn't end up in a better place then here. A secure place for our bicycles. Good breakfast in the morning. Solid Wi-Fi connection. Commen areas to hang out. Everything you need in a close distance from the hostel. And the owner David is awesome. Often asked if we needed anything and if everything was ok. And the prices are good. This place is just what you need.

Ruta Alterna felt like being at home.
The rooms had carpeted floors so it was warm in contrast to the typical cold of Cajamarca. Also, the bedroom had a complete and spacious internal bathroom, with hot water and towels.
On the other hand, the lodge had common areas such as kitchen, dining room, computer with internet connection and living room with fireplace. During our stay we always have support for the use of the facilities. They were all in good condition and the family that manages the hostel was always concerned that my family and I were comfortable during our stay in Cajamarca.
Not only that, every morning they offered me free advice to choose the best tourist attraction according to the weather predictions for that day, where to get the best prices, how much is the average price of taxis according to the distance, etc.
In short, every morning they took care of me, my wife and my children so that we had an unforgettable experience. Very soon we will return.

Pros:
Carlos is the friendliest and most helpful host we've met on our South America trip. He constantly helped us out with planning our day trips around Cajamarca and gave advice about what to do in the rest of Peru.
He has lovely dogs that brightened up our day.
Wifi worked great everywhere.
Small hostel but room was big and bed was very comfy.
Breakfast was lovely (eggs, bread, jam, butter, tea/coffee, and juice)
Kitchen small but well equiped.
Warm shower.
Lovely chill out area out the front and hammocks upstairs.
Only a 10 minute walk from the plaza and shopping centre.
2 minute walk away from the 2 main markets.
Safe surrounding location.
Cons: didn't stay longer.

Probably the nicest hosts ever! We could check in early (5a. M. ) with a little surcharge and check out late without any problem. The hostel is clean, has a well equipped kitchen (even a bialetti coffee maker ;-) ) and a little balcony with hammocks. The owners are so lovely and it is very close to the market. We justed loved our stay and highly recommend it to anyone!

Terrible rental service, no privacy.
The owner is traumatized, crazy and burned.
Every 5 minutes he's entering the room untouched.
We were evicted 1:00 am in curfew with threats.
