A very special place — like a little oasis from the busyness of life. I love that they've restored three classic Kiwi houses to such a high standard. We don't usually stay in backpackers but this one is so amazing — we'll be back!

Nice character villa's with dorms & private rooms. Very clean, friendly owner's & staff. Attractive ground's with sauna & spa. Parking is never a problem here.

Wi-Fi is decent at best, not functioning at worst. Kitchen is very sufficiently equipped. Showers are great. The beds and rooms are very clean and comfortable too.

Impersonal, is just too big for me.

Awesome place, all mod cons. Really good beds – even the top ones… Friendly and helpful staff; they know their onions and any problems (Problems? In NZ? ) are usually resolved within minutes. And then of course there’s Max. Need I say more?

There's nothing wrong with that. The hostel is clean, generously designed and has a Spa. Kitchen was a little small, but you can overlook it. But.

This has got to be one of my favorite hostels of all time. Free unlimited Wi-Fi for people who are staying. A decent size kitchen with everything that you need. Comfortable beds with a good shower in each dorm building. Safety deposit box to store away your valuables. There are a lot of travelers that stay at this hostel so it is really easy to meet new people. The only downside is that, there's not much around, and that you have to walk to get to places (ie. City centre, banks, stores).

Great hostel with helpful staff, a nice layout and a lovely dog called Max. Feels like home! The different small houses make the garden feel like a community place (in a good sense! ) and everything is making you want to stay longer!

This a very comfortable hostel with a lot of charme. Also friendly stuff that keep the place tidy and clean. Would always come back!

A really nice hostel. The staff are really friendly and the hostel is very homely. Comfy beds, spacious rooms, a number of safes in each, a hot tub, a sauna and they have a dog! What more could you ask for?!

Well located, staff friendly but I had a problem in my check-in which was only resolved on the day following.

Best cozy hostel in Christchurch. It's a big place with a lot rooms and doorms. Three big houses with rooms with 4 doorm room, 6 doorms rooms and one bed rooms. It's a beautiful garden I the middle and they have a spa (wasn't working when I was there) and a souna. Cosy kitchens and cozy living rooms. Every house have a Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi is pretty good but in the evening when many people are using it's pretty hard to connect. They have a nice dog named Max.

We stayed at the “The Old Countryhouse Backpackers” last weekend and all I can say is: “It was great! ”. The receptionist was welcoming and absolutely friendly. She gave us the necessary informations about the hostel and showed the rooms and facilities. Everything was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was modern and the kitchen offered everything you need for cooking. I would recommend this hostel to anyone because even if it is very centrally located, it offers the opportunity to relax and the cozy atmosphere of a country house is definitely given. Thanks! It was fantastic from the beginning until the end. Starting with the lovely and friendly welcome of Luca who explained everything perfect to us, continuing with the well equipped and clean kitchen (free coffee available! ), we directly felt at home. In our dorm room we had huge windows and the beds were comfortable too. Plus: Two sockets for every bed — Perfect to use especially in combination with the free Wi-Fi! Another nice feature were the secure lockers. Even though, I didn‘t need to use them because I felt safe over the whole stay, I do think it is another good opportunity to create and support a safe feeling. At night it was good to have the electronic key that you get in the beginning. You will not have any problems to enter the Hostel. Thanks so much to Gerti and Andy again — it was fantastic! I would highly recommend to go here!

Nice, chilled place. It has a little hot tub and a little sauna, which are both working perfect. It's clean, cosy, and you always have very nice and sunny places to sit.

Great place. Very very clean. I've backpacked around Australia and absolutely none of them come close to the standards of cleanliness here. Nice big well equipped kitchen and a hot tub outside. Showers have good pressure too. Well worth it.

One of the best hostels I visited in NZ. Everything was clean and the staff was very nice and helpfull. Highly recommended.

Different from the other hostels I have stayed in. The vibe feels as if you are with friends and family. All the facilities are super clean and always work. Loved it here!

Awesome Atmosphere!. Perfect place to to stay in Christchurch and relax in the sauna or hot tub. Staff is extremely nice and helpful. They can even help you book some fun activities :).

Felt very at home during my stay here, and the hosts were really friendly and helpful with planning your day or just have a friendly chat. Great facilities. Very spacious and well looked after. A positive surprise were the secure lockers to keep valuables in. Now, I never used these because I didn't feel the need for it since the premises were only acessable to guests. But it was a very nice feature to provide this for guests to feel ever more secure. If I have to say ANY negative thing about this place it would be that the matresses weren't the most comfortable, but that's about it. Highly recommended.

This is the typical Kiwi house — how fantastic that you can stay in this great property, together with like minded travellers. The facilities are good, clean and it even has a Spa Pool! (nice to see the stars in the evening) The staff is supurb, basically I asked them everything and they guided me to the places to visit (there is a beer brewery 5 minutes walk from them). The beds are good, made from solid wood rather than cheap Chinese crap. One of the best places to stay, very likely the best one in Christchurch!

Stayed here in June. Central heating, oh my god. Thought I would be freezing in the South Island, but I was warmer that night than I usually am up here in Auckland. A lovely, friendly place with all the basics available. Plenty of parking off and on the street. And most importantly, there's a dog!

Really cute set-up in a cluster of old houses. Clean and cheap. Very small room with only one outlet but definitely a great stay for the price.

Staff were very friendly and The Old Countryhouse had availability while other hostels in the area may be fully booked. I was pleasantly surprised by the accommodations. There are three main buildings each with free Wi-Fi and the rooms are spacious. There are full kitchens in each building and there is a hottub and sauna free for occupants. The only reason I did not give the hostel I 5 stars is that the area of town is not particularly exciting or easily walkable to attractions. If you would like a nice comfortable place to crash, this is it.

Super chilled out, really well looked after backpackers. Great bunch of people and cheap rates.

The staff was extremely unhelpful. Poor service and very thin mattrasses. In winter the heaters are usually off to safe money on electricity bills which makes it unbearable to sit in any room without a winter jacket. On top of this I was charged for an extra night in a single room which I hadn't booked :s I spend that night in the 6 bed dorm. The staff gives you fake smiles and will gossip after you turned your back to them. I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here.

I'll always coming back! It's honestly one of the best, cleanest, well equipped and most important (! ), warmest hostels I have ever been. The Old Countryhouse Backpacker Hostel is not the cheapest one but you'll absolutely get, what you deserve — Quality, "free" Internet and very very friendly Service. You shouldn't miss this opportunity while staying in the Garden City — CHRISTCHURCH.

Beautiful hostel in the city center with a large garden, and a spa pool and sauna and superfriendly staff. Got lots of tips for my travels in NZ. Lovely social atmosphere around teh other guests. Difinitely one of the best hostels in New Zeland and I would recommend to anybody to stay here.

Loved it. It's a very nice and clean hostel with a beautiful garden, friendly people and the most friendly dog. Staff are very helpful and have a lot of great recommendations, not only for christchurch but also for other places in the South Island. Definitely worth staying here and I would recommend this place to anyone.

Definitely recommend this place for those who like their peace and quiet! I particularly liked the location as it was walking distance to the city center yet tucked away in a quiet area away from the noise. Sourrounded by plenty of excellent small restaurants and shops, and right next to the bus stops. Awesome friendly staff too. What more can I say.
