Hotel Jimenez: A Lively Oaxaca Stay (If You Don't Mind the Noise)
My recent visit to Oaxaca, Mexico, had me staying at Hotel Jimenez, and my experience was… rustic, but ultimately served its purpose. If you're looking for a quiet, climate-controlled sanctuary, this isn't it. However, if, like me, you just need a central spot to crash after a day of exploring the vibrant city of Oaxaca, it'll get the job done.
The most significant hurdle at Hotel Jimenez is the lack of air conditioning. To keep cool, you're pretty much forced to leave your window open. While this allows for some airflow, it also opens your room up to a relentless cacophony of sounds from the street below. Honking cars, lively conversations, music, and the general hum of urban life are your constant companions, especially at night. Light sleepers, be warned and bring earplugs!
Despite the noise, the hotel's saving grace is its location. It's perfectly situated for walking and discovering the incredible city of Oaxaca. I spent my days wandering through markets, admiring colonial architecture, savoring delicious food, and immersing myself in the local culture. For this, Hotel Jimenez was ideal – a convenient base from which to launch my daily adventures.
So, while Hotel Jimenez won't win any awards for luxury or tranquility, it's a no-frills option that provides a bed for the night.
When my husband and I first arrived we were ready to just shower after a whole day of traveling, when it was time to shower the water didn’t seem to get any warmer and water pressure was completely gone when you went half ways hot so we went to the front desk lady to notify her she then came up to check and basically said that she couldn’t do anything. We asked to be moved rooms we even offered to pay extra for a better room and she said no because the room we’re already in that we arrived 1hr ago was already used and wouldn’t be rented out since there isn’t anymore customers. She continued to say we had less than 30min before she shuts the hot water off as if there was limits to it. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone who is on the same boat with traveling for hrs and just need of a shower.
