Almaty Backpackers

I have extended my stay for 2 more days as I like this hostel. There's lot of travellers staying here. Kitchen to cook. Evening we can sit down and have drinks which brings people together for some good night time.

I had a fantastic time at this hostel. The staff were super friendly and helpful. There’s a washing machine available, a big kitchen for cooking, and nice common areas both inside and outside to hang out and meet people. The only downside is that there are just 3 bathrooms, which can get busy sometimes.
Overall, my stay here was excellent and I would definitely recommend this place to everyone!

I would say this hostel is doing the bare minimum and I would recommend finding somewhere else to stay. The staff are a little unhelpful and are not available until late in the day. The bathrooms are a bit dirty and can sometimes be hard to find a free one.
The furniture inside and out are very tired and could do with being updated. Seeing what the hostel used to look like when it won hostel of the year, it looks like the quality has massively dropped and has not been upkept in years.

Rather average, not much privacy, not great social places except for the outdoor table. Good courtyard if you have a motorbike/bicycle/etc. One of the worst places that I stayed at on the trip. Social but you can be social anywhere. Hostel doing the absolute bare minimum.

Staff is useless, lazy and rude.
Reserved thru booking (3-4 different times) and staff cancelled all the stays so we still had to pay them booking fee and they just pocket that money. Unprofessional and illegal. Don’t let them have you cancel it and confront them if they cancel it on you.
Had almost brand new pair of hiking shoes stolen (not hostels fault but really sucked) and staff did not care. Also food stolen from common kitchen.
Had to make up own bed because staff is too lazy.
Had breakfast thrown out by terrible cleaning lady and she lied about why she did it. My friend was compensated but they did nothing for me.
3 toilets and showers for maybe 30
People. All disgusting and not cleaned properly (watched terrible cleaning lady do lazy job)
Christine is cool and did a good job.
Overall, great place to meet people and plan trips but terrible for everything else. Budget hostel so some of this is expected & normal but stealing money from you and booking is wild. Everything added up to a bad experience. Stay at evergreen or wanderlust.

Amazing hostel. Staff are very down to earth and super helpful with everything. Had an amazing time, you should absolutely stay here.

There's only two toilets and one shower room for 20+ guests. The toilets are usually dirty, with water issues and AC issues in the hostel. Also, if you end up reserving your bed from booking. Com, you'll be asked to cancel your booking while staying paying the full amount. Unprofessionally managed, disappointed with the property.

It's pretty ok. Budget hostel don't expect too much. Our room was clean toilet too. Social vibe.

Location is okey but you still need a taxi to go to the city. Every night 1-3 people needed to sleep on the sofa because they over book the beds every time.
+ 7% I you pay by card! This is outrageous. I would not come back.

Good location. Be aware that the hostel is a very social hostel with loads of people doing a little bit of a longer term stay. It can get quite crowded in the public areas and washrooms (only 2 showers and toilets for 20+ people. I would recommend if you want to have a chilled „private“ time to look for something on booking as it is cheaper and in the great bars of Almaty it’s still easy to meet people.

I was really not impressed with this property. So many things went wrong during my stay there. First off, there was no running water for a whole day, so no showers or working toilets. The beds are not made until you ask them to. The rooms are not clean. The private room is in the basement downstairs and super musty and moist smelling. There is AC only in SOME dorm rooms, and not the private room. Staff seem disinterested and not helpful. They offer free laundry in exchange for good reviews.

Location was so far from anything and not decent places to eat nor markets. Rooms were small and beds creaked like crazy. The AC all night was hot then cold so I was constantly adjusting. And I woke up at 2am itching my legs like crazy! Im guessing bed bugs from the red bites. Whole vibe of hostel was odd. Staff just seem unenthusiastic.

I stayed here for 4 nights and it was great value for money, the room was kept clean and the staff were helpful. The location is good, and it is close to the bus and metro for anything that isn't within walking distance.

Staff were totally useless, room was insanely hot and AC was broken. Pretty sure the staff lived in the hostel and just slept on the sofas in the communal area when the place was full.

I stayed at Almaty Backpackers for a few nights during my visit to Almaty. Overall, it was an okay experience. The room was spacious, clean, and well-maintained, which made my stay comfortable. However, I didn’t feel like there were many backpackers to connect with. Most of the people staying there seemed to be long-term residents, and the atmosphere wasn’t as social or friendly as I had hoped.
The location is a bit far from the main street, making it a bit inconvenient, especially during winter. It was a struggle to get to the main street, as the cold and the distance made it uncomfortable at times.
Overall, the hostel is decent in terms of room quality and cleanliness, but if you’re looking to meet other travelers and enjoy a more vibrant atmosphere, this may not be the best fit.

The service was especially nice. I felt very well helped, especially by Aisultan, who thought with me when I had a problem and made the stay feel very hospitable. I did run into some minor inconveniences, such as rooms being too hot and some areas being not too clean. Also, another staff member was quite rude to me. However, most staff members were super sweet and nice, making my stay very enjoyable and a lot of fun!

Stayed in this hostel for two days. Clean and not very noisy hostel with well-organized space, convenient location. There is all the necessary equipment, bathrooms are clean and there are enough of them for all hostel guests.
Staff is also very helpful and friendly, especially Aisultan who went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. Wonderful experience!
