Nice onsen town! Was a busy town with a lot of people skiing and snowboarding nearby at the slopes!

Very nice place. Family room is large with tatami tea area. Nice location next to a forest. Two onsens — one outdoor and another large indoor. Friendly and very helpful staff. Helped us find some good restaurants around town. It is small town so taxi and traditional restaurants close or stop between 8-9pm (normally earlier that 8.30pm). Ski rental is in the basement and is open from 8.30am, so if you want to ski earlier you need to call the rental person and request. Arcade centre is also in the basement area. Breakfast is from 7-8.30am and has a large variety of food. English support is very limited but can be managed. Would highly recommend going with a Japanese friend.

The room was amazing and clean. Tatami tea area separate from your beds. Beautiful scenery outside the hotel window. An arcade centre on the B1 where I could punch a machine. Ski rental is only after 8.30am which is a loss of time if you want an early start. Price is cheap but it wasn't waxed properly so we had a hard time. We ended it in a day and returned the ski set. Onsen in the hotel is an extra charge not included in the room price. Breakfast is from 7am-8.30am which was alright. Most of the traditional restaurants around the area close between 8.30pm-9.00pm. Taxis stop at 8.30 unless you request it through your hotel. Beyond this it was a nice experience.

If you want all the comforts of western society, don't come here. Zao is truly beautiful, the people warm and welcoming. We have found only one person that speaks fluent English and that's just fine. It's my job to learn Japanese NOT expect others to know English. Love Zao, a wonderful Japanese experience ❤

The outdoor hot spring is really beautiful and relaxing. This place doesn't have many amenities, but the hot spring itself is definitely worth it for the ¥500.
