G-Rough, Rome, a Member of Design Hotels

This property is advertised as a five-star hotel, but the experience felt closer to an unattended Airbnb than a hotel or even a B&B.
Despite being described as fully booked, we almost never saw any staff during our stay. There was no greeting on arrival, no visible personnel in common areas, and no sense of active management. The building felt empty, impersonal, and disconnected from any hospitality experience.
The entrance is through a bar that remained closed throughout our stay. Apart from water or juice, nothing could be ordered. The bar and entrance area were unlit, making the hotel very dark and uninviting. This felt especially misleading given the hotel’s marketing around a social bar concept.
An item appeared to be missing from my room during the stay. I chose not to raise this, as the overall atmosphere did not feel reassuring.
After checkout, luggage storage required signing a waiver disclaiming responsibility for loss. When asked about security cameras, I was told there were none, and luggage was left in an unsupervised dining area.
Breakfast quality was poor, a basic room service order took nearly two hours, and prices were extremely high for the level of service provided.
I have stayed at other hotels in Rome, including Hotel de Russie, which offered a far more professional and welcoming experience. I would not return.

We had a lovely stay 2 years ago and came back for the vibe. Unfortunate since then they had to stop serving breakfast and no longer are able to have a bar — both were big positives and where things we really enjoyed. While it sounds like an issue out of their control, they should have notified us prior. The breakfast voucher that we were given was not nearly as good and we skipped it the second day. I rarely write reviews unless there are a few things. People weee nice, but for some reason made a reservation for a restaurant at a different date then we were there. Our espresso machine was not working and was never replaced. They offered to make one for the morning we were leaving for our flight so an order was put in the night before, but when I asked for it that morning they said it was not possible as the machine was being cleaned. The theme is nice and the rooms are well crafted, but a bit dark. However the lack of bar and breakfast would have us not return especially in that we were not informed of the change.

The hotel's location is excellent but I would echo earlier feedback that this hotel is not really a hotel in the Marriott sense but more like a trendy bed and breakfast — especially with regards to hotel staffing and services. When we checked in, we entered a hot musty room that took several hours to cool down once they finally turned the air on. The included breakfast is at a restaurant down the street (but they don't tell you this until after you check-in). We were told certain items on the coffee table were complimentary at check-in and then at check-out, we were told they were chargeable mini-bar. When we mentioned this miscommunication, they kindly didn't charge us for the chips we ate (because we didn't have time to go to the restaurant down the street). We booked this through Marriott which felt misleading because it didn't feel like a Marriott property. Overall, not what I had expected from the "hotel" or from a Marriott-affiliation but fine enough rooms and nice location. But as others have also said, for the price point ($$$), I would have selected something else.

Just stopped by for a drink with my girlfriend. Stefano & Stefano (I think that’s what their names were and sorry if I misspelled your names) were class with their hospitality/service. Candid and cool (kind of what you would want from a boutique place as such). We received so many cool tips on where to eat & drink in Rome (and avoid the crowds). Will definitely stop by again for a drink if not to stay.

Went in early morning of May 5th.
Waitress adorable. So sweet even let me use iPhone charger.
We ordered and drank 4 cappuccino’s. Perfect visit.
Next day around 5pm my friends sat in little restaurant and ordered wine. They were sitting drinking.
My husband ordered 2 coffees never got them. I came in knowing where washroom was from day before.
I was at exit waiting to meet up with someone.
This (lady) from G Rough started screaming at me.
My friends still sitting there were somewhat embarrassed.
I said why are you so mean! I left a few seconds later I returned as I wanted to know what actually just happened!? I was thinking maybe because I used the loo?
So I asked her again why are you so mean? She again was extremely rude so I flipped her the bird and said something not nice and she responded same gesture!
Wow! After reading the reviews I see I’m not the first to experience this kind of behaviour!
What happened to customer service?

We stayed at G-Rough for 4 nights and loved every moment! The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of Rome, just a short walk from major attractions, great restaurants, and shops. The rooms are uniquely designed in a boutique style, full of character and a true Roman vibe.
Breakfast was fresh and delicious, served in a relaxed and stylish setting.
The staff was kind and helpful throughout our stay, and we especially want to thank Stefano, the manager, who welcomed us warmly and was incredibly attentive and professional.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for an authentic and stylish Roman experience with a personal touch. We would definitely return!

This is a Marriott property but it is much closer to a bed and breakfast than a standard hotel. The floor we stayed on was actually two suites that they combine as a full floor two bedroom. This was not clear in the description, but worked out for us and our young kids to have fully separated spaces. The decor is very insta ready and antique which means that it is not necessarily the most user friendly or sturdy, but it is beautiful if you're not shy about the shower that has windows to the hallway of the room and the shared stairwell. You have to move these antique pieces to get to any outlets and they don't really work well with converters which seems like a miss in the reno. The front room is very noisy as the windows are original and there are performers and bar goers in the square outside until midnight and then clean up crews starting very early so the kids stayed in the back which is separated by a very long narrow hallway. We paid significantly more to go through Marriott as you can book directly with them for a discount but weren't confident we would earn points that way. There wasn't an option to not pay for breakfast so we got it out of principle most days, but it's a little odd. You have to preselect when (within 15min) /where (room/front bar/back room) /what you want the night before.

The bar is so beautiful, so comfy and make you want to stay all night, sipping cocktails.
The cocktails are delicious! both bartenders are adorable, they want you to have an amazing time! I was really really surprised with all the nice finger food they bring with the cocktails!
Highly recommended for before dinner or after dinner!
One of Rome's highlight!

Room was wonderful. Essentially an apartment! Staff was lovely and helpful. So kind and welcoming. Location is fantastic right around the corner from Palazzo Navona and near great dining options. Close to the pantheon, a 10-15 minute walk to Trevi fountain and a 20-25 minute walk to the colosseum.

G Rough currently has one of the most glamorous bars in Rome, with great music and a great crowd, to boot. We, possibly like others, assumed that the hotel could only be as good or better. Sadly, their motto, “questa casa non è un albergo, ” meaning, this house is not a hotel, was prophetic. Before booking their entry-level room, the Executive Suite, at $500 a night, we noticed that the Marriott site indicated a queen-size bed, whereas the G Rough site indicated a king-size. No worries, came the reply from Lorenzo at the front desk when we inquired, "Regarding your request we confirm the king size beds in all of our rooms. ” On arrival many months later, we were assigned Rm 102 on the first floor, where music from the bar was already rising up the stairs. Realizing that we were not going to get much sleep until the early hours, we were grateful to be airlifted up to Rm 302, out of sound’s way. Yet, in not one but both of these suites: queen-size beds. Hence two poor nights for two restless sleepers who had been assured of something else. Our two-day stay showcased style over substance: the door between the two rooms of the suite was ill-adjusted and would not close; beautiful terrazzo tiling inside the bedroom was broken, creating a trip hazard; the hand-held shower in a stunning bathroom (the best room in the suite, a showstopper in gold tile) was disabled.

Roma is the first stop of our Europe trip therefore I was rather picky when I chose the hotel, and G-Rough is absolutely exceptional.
The hotel staffs are all amazing and super helpful throughout our stay. I really would like to shout out to everyone on duty during our stay. We were warmly welcomed by the manager who took care of all the check in things and all we did was sipping Aperol Spritz at the G-Bar. We also had lots of great chats with Stefano (I think it’s the name) regarding Roman local things and culture. There was that bartender girl we didn’t get a chance to ask her name but she has brunette/black hair and tall who ran the extra mile helping us to get the taxi multiple times and following up my laundry request. Grazie everyone Grazie Mille!
Another reason why we booked this hotel is for its interior design. The more we travel around Roma the more we realise how much efforts did the designer put in this place. Everything in the room reminds you that you are in Roma. Despite the location is in the heart of the city, we didn’t hear a lot of noise at night and our sleep quality has been great.
We will come back again :)

Absolutely loved the G-Rough. Wife and stayed 3 nights. Awesome location. Really nice rooms and super friendly staff. Would definitely stay there again.

Great little hotel in a perfect location in Rome. The people were great and the service wonderful. We had a large room overlooking the Piazza. The rooms have a lot of character — I mean that in a good way. You are right next to the Piazza de Navona and close to all the other things you want to see. It sits in the heart of the Piazza de Pasquali, which has a couple of good restaurants and lots of activity. The lobby bar is a great place to relax before you go out or when you return. Their sign is very small so it can be hard to pick it out in the Piazza but that just adds to its charm. We would absolutely stay there again.

Beautiful interior design, just the right balance of classic architecture and modern twist. The hotel is really affordable, although the downside is that it doesn't offer a ton in the way of amenities. But for someone looking for a romantic stylish stay in the city — can't go wrong.

At age 75 and having travelled extensively, I have never stayed either home or abroad, at a hotel that provided the extent of comfort, uniqueness, service, hospitality, and graciousness, as G-Rough in the center of Rome, Italy. At the moment of our arrival off of a cruise ship, to our exit to sadly return home to the U. S. Stefano, the hotel's manager, concierge, greeter, baggage handler and public relations representative treated us as Royalty. He exhibited every characteristic that the owner of the hotel describes in the in-room brochure, "G-Rough Is Not A Hotel. " We could not have asked for more personalized and gracious service during our three day stay at the hotel located in a building that is of 17th Century bones, and contemporary/1950's personality. His nighttime clone, Lorenzo was every bit as helpful for those little things that we forgot to acquire during daytime hours. And the breakfast chef, the bartender (s) during morning to evening hours, as well as the housekeeping staff, did all that they possibly could to create for us an almost wonderland experience in one of our favorite countries in the world. We cannot thank you enough for the best trip ever — and this has been our third trip to Rome since 2006. Ciao!

An absolute 5 star experience! From the pre-check in communication to the holding of our bags when we headed back to the hotel after finding ourselves delayed by 12 hours, the experience was FLAWLESS. Lorenzo was an absolute gem, Andrew was extremely helpful, and the rest of the staff we encountered were kind. The design is exquisite and the rooms large in size and incredibly well appointed, even by non-EU standards. Highly recommend and will be back again!
