Review of Hotel San Michele 4*

I didn't have a good experience at this hotel, and I'm not usually a fussy person! It is in a good location, about a 5 minute walk to the main square. The hotel itself has some old charm, but needs a bit of modernization. My room was okay, the bed was comfortable. The toilet seat was broken and would slide off. I asked for it to be fixed, but after 4 days it still wasn't seen to! The bathroom was also small and pokey and the shower screen didn't close all the way so the shower would soak the floor. Good hot water though. Breakfast was really not good. A real lack of choice, cold hard boiled eggs, a bit of tinned fruit, some fresh fruit, lots of sweet pastries though. Staff at breakfast looked moody and unhelpful. Probably the worst experience came when I checked out, they said I needed to pay 8 euros for some fried eggs I had at breakfast! When I was at breakfast I saw people getting cooked eggs, so I asked a waiter for some. He didn't mention anything about having to pay for them, and there was no menus on the table. The lady at reception who was demanding the payment took me to the restaurant and went behind the bar and got a menu showing me the price. I said to her "how was I supposed to see that when there are no menus on the table! " She was insistent on me paying but I outright refused, based on principle of the ridiculous cost and second because no one told me I had to pay for some cooked eggs. It definitely left a sour taste. Another thing was the Wi-Fi, it was not working for at least 80% of the time at the hotel. I got better Wi-Fi on my travels in Asia, I'm surprised how poor it was at this European hotel. I wouldn't stay here again to be honest. The desk staff were nice but that's about it.
