Partner and I stayed for my 60th; two young ladies who were sisters at reception spoke excellent English and encouraged our poor Italian.
Their mother had limited English but we communicated in a fashion.
Room with a view was used in most PR photos, side view of Messina Straits on small balcony.
Room was basic; cleaned daily, bed was hard but surprisingly very comfortable.
Local recommended restaurant that only had 20 covers served a very simple but freshly cooked pasta/swordfish selection.
Overall nice relaxing stay in a sleep fishing village unspoilt as yet with the budget airlines.
This hotel is probably more geared to local tourists, but is a great option set up the top of Scilla (ie it is not down at beach level and requires a transfer to get there). The hotel has a free shuttle and this worked really well as we were met upon arrival (but do contact the hotel ahead of time to arrange this). Our room had a bit of a sea view, was spacious, tastefully decorated and all services worked well. It is in a quiet location and walks into the centre and down to the beach areas are easy. There is an excellent supermarket up the street. Breakfast was typical but well prepared. Stay here if you like family run hotels with a welcoming vibe.

The reviews for hotel scilla are all over the place, so we didn't know what to expect! I think it depends on which room you get, as they do differ. The best part of the hotel for me, was the charming architecture in addition to the delightful outdoor breakfast area! Breakfast was very good, loved the croissants, fresh cake and ham. (No clue why people complain about it). The tile floors of our room and terrace were exceptionally clean, linens were normal, bathroom dated, but clean. Do wish the room had more cups or glasses. Only one tea cup. We too were there when the aircon broke, I'm sure that made people cranky. It really seemed to me like the owners are trying to improve some things, for example, our terrace chairs were new. Note the hotel is in the upper part of Scilla, a cute area, with some parking options, but the beach is down a lot of stairs! Seasonal elevator costs a few euro and stops running later in the evening.
