If you are looking to surf challenging, world class waves to surf in a remote destination without sacrificing comfort, Hollow Trees is for you.
HT’s could not have been more hands on helping me as an international traveler make my trip to get to the resort any smoother. If you’re looking at this area, you know there is a bit of a trek to get there. HT’s coordinated each step seamlessly, with hands on customer service and communication the whole way. When my airline lost my bags, they handled the situation for me completely by retrieving them from the airline in Padang and coordinated them to get to the resort, making sure they were dropped off in my room as soon as was possible the very next day. A+ service for when you are dependent on your surf gear on an important trip.
Additionally, they have a great selection of boards on site and will coordinate custom or stock orders from a bigger selection at Bali. When I showed up I had boards in had preordered waiting for me. I also needed a ding repair during the trip which was done perfectly and within a few hours, a remarkable turnaround.
The staff at the resort could not be more pleasant. Huge shout out to our surf guide Nathan who was hands on with both finding the best waves for us around the island without fail daily and being hands on with teaching, all while bringing a positive, inclusive experience for all levels of surfers staying at the resort.

To start off, I’ll say the location of the resort is great for advanced surfers who don’t mind a competitive crowd in the water. The restaurant staff was also very friendly. I also decided against writing my negative review until the resort sent me an email asking for a review.
I had stayed at other resorts in the Mentawais before coming here, and we were very disappointed by Hollow Tree Resort. The resort’s online presence far exceeds the actual experience. In reality, it feels more like a hostel—and a massively overpriced one. The place has aged significantly.
It was nearly impossible to shower, as the water smells strongly of rotten eggs—both inside and out. Ironically, the cleanest water seemed to be the greenish water in pools, only because they smelled like chlorine. We ended up using the pool instead of the showers. The rooms are very basic and the bed sheets were dirty when we arrived.
To make matters worse, a friend of ours came down with severe food poisoning from the restaurant.
The overall vibe of the place is very tense, with it feeling like the surfers are constantly sizing each other up as opposed to simply enjoying the great wave just in front. It should also be noted that you must like to drive a scooter through puddles and direct roads if you want to get to a variety of waves. All walkable waves are very depended on the same wind and swells.
I left early and will not be returning.

I came to Hollow Tree’s Resort without touching a surfboard—and still had the trip of a lifetime! This hidden gem is a sanctuary for anyone craving peace, adventure, or just pure tropical bliss.

The food here is epic. As good as any restaurant you’d find in Indonesia and amazing they can deliver this in such a remote location. The steak is so bloody good and the rendang is second only to my wife’s! (No pressure applied…. )
This place is the heart and soul of the area.

If you are local tourist, I don't recommend you to go here.
I came here just to enjoy the beach and the restaurant, we order some food, it was nice and delicious but we decided to take it away. When I ask the staff to help me wrap my food, they doing it reluctantly and keep ignoring me by having other conversations with other staff. She came to my table bringing pizza box and a plastic bag, put it right on my food and ask me to wrap it my self.
This is just very disappointing!

I stayed 10 days at Hollow Tree’s Resort for a surf trip, and it was absolutely amazing. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we were surfing every day at the best spots nearby, depending on the conditions. The vibe of the place is super relaxed and friendly — everyone made us feel right at home. The resort itself is perfectly located, right in front of the world-famous Lance’s Right, which is a dream for any surfer. I 100% recommend Hollow Tree’s for anyone looking to surf, relax, and explore this beautiful part of the Mentawais. Can’t wait to go back!

This is a review for the hospitality and food. While traveling through by boat, HTR welcomed us in for meals and even shared local knowledge with us as we navigated our way through the Mentawais. When an expected southern swell was coming in to the bay, I reached out via email and the management team was quick to respond and directing us to one of two anchorages that would be better for us to stay overnight.

Had the most amazing week at HTs. It's the best surf resort in the world in my opinion. They have super high quality amenities and services but they also manage to keep a very familial atmosphere. You quickly get to know other guests and staff members, everyone goes surfing together. When HT's isn't working, other world-class waves are available on the other side of the peninsula. Scooter rentals with board racks are free. The boat to take you to the other side of the island is fast and reliable. Best way to experience this part of the Mentawais!

Just a few steps from the room, you can find a beautiful beach, crystal clear water, and world-class waves. There is also a pool, the air conditioning works well, the beds are spacious and comfortable, and the Wi-Fi is excellent. Three meals a day are provided, with a wide variety of Indonesian and Western dishes, and they are all outstandingly delicious! The hosts, Liam and Emma, ​​are always friendly and willing to help you with anything, and Liam will suggest the best place and time for the waves that day, which is very reassuring. The local staff work hard and are all friendly, so it's always a pleasure to talk to them. And yet it's more reasonable than other resorts! What else do you need? The environment here is very relaxing and I really love it. I don't think there are many surf resorts that have it all.

We had an amazing time! The crew, food, resort, boat, etc. Was top notch. Emma made all the travel details simple and easy and Liam guided us to the best waves & timing. I highly recommend HT's Resort, you wont be disappointed. Cant wait to come back.

The room is comfortable and the whole structure of the resort is welcoming. All the staff are sensational and attentive. The restaurant menu is varied and the food is top quality.
Hollow Tree's Resort is a place to go to surf either alone or with familly.

There is no better option in the ments for accommodation. There will be cheaper options for sure, but the care they take to ensure literally everything with your trip is sorted from inception to your return to Padang is as world class as the wave in front of the resort. The food is good, the staff are amazing, and the trip is worth every minute it takes to get there.

We visited in May and our stay at Hollow Tree was an unforgettable experience. The journey to reach the destination was breathtaking and only added to the overall enjoyment of the trip. The secluded location of the resort made it even more incredible that they were able to provide such outstanding food and accommodations. The entire staff was incredibly outgoing, friendly, and ensured that our stay was nothing short of perfection. The air conditioning was impressively cold, providing a welcome relief from the warm climate, and the waves were truly world-class. If you're thinking about visiting the area, HT's Resort has truly mastered the art of hospitality, and this is the place to be.

I recently stayed at HTs resort for the first time and it was the best surf camp I have been to.
Staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. Food is awesome. All transfers were covered easily and additional boat trips were also easy to sort out. Sea water quality is also very good!

However, one area that could use improvement is the quality of the bikes provided. Upgrading them would certainly enhance the overall experience for guests.
Despite this minor issue, I highly recommend Hollow Trees Resort for anyone looking for a memorable and enjoyable surf vacation.
