We had a fantastic time at Java Turtle Lodge. The lodge is located in a beautiful, remote coastal part of Java surrounded by rainforest. Although the location is remote, the lodge staff make it easy to visit by organising transport from the nearest train station, and visiting the lodge is a great way to understand another side of Java after visiting the cities.
During our stay, we were able to see an amazing number of birds and animals — we were particularly excited to see black monkeys, hornbills, skinks and turtles. We took advantage of the overnight stay at the separate rainforest hostel to observe green turtles on the beach laying eggs. It was great to learn about how the rangers protect the turtles.
Java Turtle Lodge itself is a wonderful place to stay, with comfortable air conditioned cabins, peaceful gardens and incredibly kind and friendly staff. The food that the team cooked for us was some of the best we have eaten in Indonesia, and they were able to accommodate vegetarians. Although most people seemed to visit for the turtle trip package, we stayed for an extra night and found the turtle lodge a perfect location to relax and enjoy the peaceful and restful atmosphere.
During our stay, the lodge team arranged a trek for us with Cherry, a local guide. Cherry was very knowledgeable and showed us animals and birds that we would not have noticed on our own. We also really enjoyed chatting with Indra, the driver provided by the lodge, who took us back to the train station at the end of our stay.
