Hostel 66 Hostel

I thought that I would head south and zigzag through the Balkans. I don't know if that's possible. There are no trains from here headed anywhere of any import. To go anywhere you have to go back to Budapest. There's no mountains at the borders in this part of the country to impede movement, so the barrier is artificial. It makes it feel as if it's a closed frontier. Maybe if I had a better sense of the rail networks. This is supposed to be the third largest city in Hungary but it could be that it's the terminal of a rail spur. Other places I've been — — even really remote places — — you can wander around without plan, by train by bus by air. In China when I was there it was all train travel. I remember pouring over the cryptic abbreviations in these little train schedule booklets. Then later my mom came out to visit me and we flew from place to place. It was these old Soviet jets they still had in use that were vintage 1950s. The line was called CAAC. Strictly for internal use. In New Zealand there were buses but it was really simple to jump on a flight. Same with Argentina. In Costa Rica you'd get some really dodgy tiny prop jets and land on dirt runways. When I traveled overland in Mexico, in the southern provinces of Oaxaxa and Chiapas, it was bus and easy but uncomfortable to get around. Western Europe trains are ubiquitous. Occasionally I've rented a car and driver.

Not well equiped, everything older and used. Nice courtyard, quiet, 15 minutes walking to the centre.

Good and cheap place to stay in Szeged. Good location, ok rooms, but beds and showers could be better.

Nice hostel with easy way for booking without online deposit. A relative of mine stayed here before me and loved it. Plenty recommended (y)
