Essential Hostel Hostel

Dirty, dated and deadly — only thing going for it is location and the staff are helpful but the accomodation and facilities are poor and always dirty. Showers flooded every morning, wc's long way from room through whole place and reception, breakfast poor quality with no organisation meaning fairly random if you get anything — have to clear up yourself and few do.

Essential Hostel is a really nice place for accommodation in Budapest. Its team made the warm and friendly environment and offered many additional social activities. There was all necessary at the hostel, including a breakfast. Wi-Fi was also fast and stable.

We really enjoyed our stay! The staff are the friendliest people and always willing to lend you a hand. The Essential hostel is also a great way to meet new friends from all over the world. It was, however, a bit annoying that the garbage truck emptied out the garbage recycling bin early in the morning right beneath our window. We also had a bunk bed right next to the window and there was nothing to cover up the windows with. These minor problems were resolved with earplugs and a sleeping mask. To end on a high note; the staff organised a free wine tasting on wednesday which was really fun! Overall a great experience! I would definitely recommend travelers to stay at Essential hostel!

The hostel is in a good location. I stayed in a 4 bedroom dorm which was quite spacious. However, the room and the sheets were not very clean. The shower door did not close properly and there was a puddle of water all over in the bathroom. Also since there was no drain in the bathroom outside the shower cubicle, the puddle with the dirt just stayed there. After complaining, the staff cleaned it once and kept a mop in the bathroom for us to clean it. The mop was also quite dirty so it didn't really clean the floor well. Also, that is not the solution — they need to repair the shower door so that it closes well. This was an ensuite bathroom so I am sure that the common one will be worse. When I arrived, there was apparently similar problem in the common showers and there was water all over the floor. There were towels kept to soak up the water. It is good that the beds had a curtain for privacy but it looked like they hadn't been washed in several years. The staff is quite friendly and the layout of the hostel in general is quite OK. If they spend a little time in maintaining it and cleaning it, this could be great.

This hostel is so nice and the location is convenient. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the staff was friendly. I really enjoyed my staying there. When I come to Budapest again, I will stay at this hostel :)

This hostel is horrible and disgusting. Don’t ever go there. There are spider webs, bed bugs. The staff laughs at us at each demand.

Good hostel, the rooms are quite spacious with well equipped beds, the staff is friendly, the showers and WC are enough for all, some small arrangements could be made like putting clothes in the showers… The kitchen and relaxation area deserves to be better separated to be quiet when you eat!

This position is really hard to find! Looking for can make you doubt life! I didn't find it for one hours, I went around a couple of times, also asked a lot of people, finally asked a shop assistant to know the exact address, the logo is too inconspicuous, and still in the side, in the residential building inside, I find the flow of nosebleed, but the environment and conditions are good, service staff is very good.

They need proper cleaner to do the job at least twice a day. Was very dirty. Wet hair everywhere. Was sleeping in cloth as bedding was so thin and the pillow case had hairs on it. So I'm not sure they even wash the beggings. Happy it was only 1 night and left at 6 am.

DO NOT CLEAN, in 4 days they have not cleaned the room or the service since I arrive was already this dirty. Shared services the same, dirty. Worst hostel I've ever been, disgusting. I asked for a complaint sheet and you told me you don't have… that all I can do is leave comments about my stay, I have photos and this is not going to stay in a simple comment.

You get what you paid for. Location is great, you have privacy with the curtains in the bed and the staff is friendly. I forgot my charger and they lent me one for my stay. Beware the rooms are not particularly clean, specially the bathrooms and the showers, which bothered me. The breakfast is simple, but enough. Try to be early since food can get scarce by the end.

It's pretty clean. The rooms are very nice as they have curtain in each bunk and they are quite spacious.

Excellent service, very nice and comfortable place, very central so you get anywhere walking, silent so you can enjoy well. Breakfast is not plentiful but OK.

We’ve been in Budapest for 2 days and needed to find a place to stay, sleep. I’ve stayed at hostels for dozens of times but for me this is the best one so far. Thanks to Essential Hostel, I have great international friends! The staff, kitchen, rooms, location are pretty good. I highly recommend you to choose this hostel. You wouldn’t regret about it.

Room cool but few spaces to relax outside, little comfortable seats kitchen and dirty bathroom.
Luckily the staff are friendly.

We were great, it is in the center of the city! All perfect the only downside were the showers a little dirty but wow… Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed my stay here! The beds are good, but the pillows could be replaced. The staff are exceptionally friendly. The wine tasting and trivia night is free and a lot of fun. The bathrooms and showers are clean. The internet is fast and stable as well.

Bedbugs everywhere! I have stings everywhere in my body. I have told that at the reception and they just laughing of me. Nobody have help me about that. This hostel is really so dirty. The shower, the rooms. Everything is dirty and with bedbugs. When I come back to my home I had to put lots of clothes in the trashbin. So I never come back to this hostel.

Avoid this place! I had been there two times. Really, unfortunately to inform that, there are lots of germs / bacteria on beds duvets which causes skin diseases. For every time when I was there I found some red spots with swell in my face, and arms. In addition to officials (Receptionists) girls and guys they are at a young age, they are just chatting and laughing. Moreover, not meet the visitors by good way (expect one girl of them)! or maybe they did not have the experience / knowledge enough for How they can receives visitors with good morals. Very friendly staff, which is really available 24/7, and ready to provide all necessary information about the city life. The location is awesome, St. Istwan basilica is almost near. The beds is comfortable. Pretty quiet after 23.00 so it is perfect to get some rest. The locker was broken. Everything else is ok.

My experience at this hostel was great! The beds were comfortable and I felt very welcomed by the staff. I was shocked to find out that the bathrooms were unisex rather than split up. Only thing I would recommend is getting to breakfast early because the food goes fast.

The stay was as expected and a value for money. The location served well as every facilities were easily accessible from the hostel very easily. The staffs were polite and helpful. Even if you do not have proper facilities for safekeeping of things they provide lock for a small deposit. The breakfast was very simple, yet good. Awesome for solo travelers.

-hostel hard to find, not enough signage! We searched for 1/4 of an hour!
— Wifi Nul_le Network was very very low, see nonexistent! I find that unacceptable!
— Cleanliness leaves a desire in the kitchen! The fridges smell bad!
— I shared my room with 6 people (until then all is well), the problem was the 2 young Australians who were very noisy and dirty!
-the bathroom was very dirty! The water flowed through the shower cubicle, at the edge of the wading pool!
— The mirrors were very high for me which is small!
— Staff Accessible_le smile varies according to the host agent which is a pity!
— The real advantage is that this hostel is close to the majority of tourist areas. There is also a SPAR at the foot of the hostel which is Cool.
— the temperature of the room was ideal, we could sleep in a tank top see even in Shorts.

Good and economical, well placed, very friendly staff.

Location is great, staff is friendly. I really enjoyed the general design and idea of that hostel. It's much better than typical hostels. The bunk beds with curtains offer some privacy. There are some lockers to store your belongings which is nice. The bathrooms are quite clean and nice, although I would suggest putting more pegs in shower cabins to be able to hang your clothes. The minus is that the ladder to the upper bed was broken and could lead to falling down. The breakfast is included in the price, which is nice. To sum up, it's a relatively cheap hostel worth recommending, with interesting facilities and a nice vibe to it.

The check-in process was smooth and fast. Thanks to the friendly and helpful staff. I booked the dorm attached shower, so I can enjoy it. The best part is I can have my own privacy within my bed with the curtain hanging on. I can even charged my handphone, camera, laptop and more. The locker is big which I can store my things. Metro is just outside the hostel. If I would be back to Budapest again, I would choose to stay in Essential Hostel.

The staff was very friendly and ready to help with anyone question, which is a big plus. The hostel itself was decently clean and your valuables could be kept safe in lockers. Eventhough In slept on a room with eight, the added curtains on the beds still gave a lot of privacy. Only the beds were pretty thin and uncomfortable. Therefor only 4 stars, since I was about half of my stay in it.

There is nothing spectacular about the hostel. It lives up to its name, and has all the essentials; but the one luxury it does have is a team that are so genuinely interested in engaging with and ensuring their guests have the best stay possible. They will go well out of their way to help, and are always willing to chat. I've stayed in many hostel's, and this one was by far my favourite, thanks purely to the team.

The hostel was really nice, it was small which allowed you to get to know people straight away and encouraged a sociable atmosphere. It was perfectly located! Very close to St. Stephen's Basilica, a 5 min walk from the city centre and right next to a metro station. It was difficult to find the first time, we managed to get in because some other guests saw us looking confused. But overall a great 3 day stay :)

I would HIGHLY recommend this hostel to anyone planning on staying in Budapest. It's about two blocks from the river on the Pest side — basically the center of the whole city of Budapest. The staff is friendly, speaks English, and is immensely helpful. They make breakfast for us every morning and offer dinner on Wednesday and Friday nights, all for free. They went far out of their way to help us, answering questions about bars, clubs, and free tours. One night one of the members of our group lost her phone, and for hours the receptionist worked, calling cab companies to hunt down her phone. As for the physical hostel, it's clean, has several showers and bathroom stalls, and it's actually a very stylish, modern hostel.

Staff were more than just helpful and friendly. They facilitated fun events like a wine tasting and trivia quiz about the area, history, and hostel itself. Also, later facilitated a dinner of French cuisine cooked by a French guest. Best location; very centrally located, next to subway stop, while also on a relatively quiet street. Staff know everything! They make great recommendations. Good kitchen facility and nice free breakfast with coffee. Lots of little nooks to hang out in. Each bunk had a privacy curtain which was nice and enabled me to change clothes without using bathroom. Will definitely stay there next time I'm in Budapest.

It is a very good hostel for a short stay.
It has curtains on every bed that help maintain privacy.
The kitchen is sometimes a bit noisy but it is very controlled as far as the schedules are concerned.
The employees are gentle and always very willing to collaborate in whatever is necessary.

There was no problem at all during my 2-night stay in this hostel. The place was nicely designed, clean and has everything basic that I need. I did not expect the breakfast which was provided during my stay.

The highlight of this hostel is the warmth of its people. It was a totally nice experience to spend the time with the amazing guys in the reception. What I suggest to change are the pillow hehe. They were a little uncomfortable for my neck ;)

Hostel with very good price and very good location, although the building is old and at the beginning gives distrust for that, the hostel is quite modern, has a good view to the street and the staff is friendly, I would definitely recommend.

I genuinely couldn't have been happier with this place. The staff were always so friendly and they really went out of their way to look after us. The events were a really fun way for all of the guests to get to know each other and the location is basically as central as it gets!

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Essential Hostel in Budapest. Location was brilliant — could walk to almost all of the famous tourist attractions or alternatively easily walk to the trams/metro! The staff are amazing people — so friendly and easy to talk to, really made me feel welcome. The dorms are very cosy and comfortable. I especially liked the design & cleanliness of the hostel overall. Most importantly — the general vibes & atmosphere of the hostel was absolutely amazing — completely felt at home and really enjoyed the social gatherings (wine tasting, pub crawls etc) Will definitely be returning if I return to Budapest! Whether travelling alone or in a group — this is the place to stay.

Best hostel I've stayed in in Europe. Staff were so friendly. The place was so clean and the free dinner and wine tasting events in the hostel were well organised and fun. Can't recommend this place highly enough!

Had a very pleasant stay at the Essential Hostel in Budapest. The location was just fine and many prime attraction were on walking distance. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and that 24/7. The overall accomodation was fine. Pros include the kitchen/common room, how tidy everything was and the facilities of the beds, or as they cal them 'sleeping units', including curtains, lockers, storage space and bedlights. Two smaller cons were the lacking holders on the wall for the showers heads, and the mattresses and pillows of the beds, which were rather thin. However, I slept good enough anyway.

They say, people make a place and this was definitely the case for Essential Hostels. When I arrived at the hostel for the first time, the moment I stepped in, it was all about good vibes! Noémi and Gyöngyvér were the perfect host! They cooked traditional Hungarian meal for us, took us out for a party, took care of every single minute details about our logistics and the list goes on! It never felt like staying in a hostel but more like staying at home with friends and family! I am definitely recommending this place to all my friends and I am coming back here again for sure! A big thumbs up to Essential Hostel! Thanks for the insane memories I had and which I would cherish for the rest of my life! Cheers! :)

Awsome place, I found a lot of new friends here. Free dinner was a nice surprise on Friday evening, also fruits were provided in the mornings. Staff is superhelpful. Quiet after 10 pm.

Very well located, very comfortable. Beds are nice, the internet comes to the rooms but not to the kitchen. Spacious rooms (I was in the room of 8 rooms and this well). Storage boxes with wheels are very useful and good size (equivalent to lockers).
