A deal at twice the price If you looking to dive Roatan Mel’s hostel is the place for you. What is great about Mel’s Roatan Backpackers Hostel. Firstly, Mel. It is her place and she takes care of it as such. Everything is well maintain and orderly, furthermore Mel is an excellent resource for the first time visitor to Roatan. She takes time to walk you around the property and then tells you where you can find what you need. Hungry and Lazy, the restaurant is staffed by wonderful people that put obvious care into every dish. If found the meatball appetizer particularly good. Hungry and like some time in the kitchen, must walk down to the store which less than 7 minute stroll, and use the communal kitchen to make whatever you want. I ran into some great people and several nights, we all cooked and ate together. Want to sit by the pool and read a book, Mel’s place has that as well. It is a medium sized pool, perfect for cooling of in the heat of the day. I stayed for 10 days after originally booking for 7, I would have stayed longer; but I had to wander on down the road. I paid less than $20 a night, for small private room with my own bathroom. Want a little more space, Mel’s has that. Want to save a little more to spend on diving, you can stay in one of the dorm rooms. I hope you treat yourself to sometime at Mel’s and make as many new friends as I did.

Roatan Backpackers' Hostel is a fabulous place to stay in Roatan either a short time or for a long term. I stayed here for 2 months back in the summer of 2018. The room was decent, food was great, almost everyone I met there was super interesting. I had so many engaging conversations with people from all over. The owner Mel was particularly welcoming, she gave me so much help during my stay in Roatan and even after it. I would highly recommend staying here and I can't wait to go back after this whole COVID-19 pandemic thing's over.

Clean, quiet and excellent staff.

Stayed here with my 70 yr old mom. We rented the private apartment, which was more like a tiny house. This was the first time either of us had stayed in a hostel and we were pleasantly surprised. Mel is a sweetheart and all the staff there were friendly and helpful. Our place there was spacious and we loved the pool! There's also a little diner to buy food, although I didn't get a chance to try it during our stay. Mel also showed us one of the single rooms with private bathroom which I wouldn't hesitate to rent if I came again on my own (which I probably will one day! ) The hostel was also quiet, not a party atmosphere, which I liked, but plenty of opportunities to socialize with other hostel guests. Thanks for an amazing stay!

An absolute gem! So happy we stayed here and definitely recommend. The hostel is in a good location in sandy bay, away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy places but just a short taxi or bus ride away. Beach is just a 5 min walk. There is a communal kitchen, hostel offers both dorm type and private rooms. Nice swimming pool as well. Close to a grocery store (few minutes walk) and a few local places to eat as well. And the best part is the owner, Mel and the staff and most of the people you meet here! Very warm and welcoming environment. We had an amazing stay and will definitely return!

Roatan Backpackers Hostel is a sweet little oasis tucked away in Sandy Bay. The location makes it convenient to get to the night life in West End or take care of any practical needs in Coxen Hole. You are also a five minute walk away from great snorkeling spots, fresh local food, or the mini markets in La Colonia. The rooms comfortably accommodate various needs at affordable prices, not to mention the staff is always very lovely and obliging. I'm so grateful to have found this little gem :)

The room was was comfortable and the pool was relaxing! The staff make you feel at home by making sure all your needs are met with friendly smiles. The area was safe with friendly neighbors to chat in the night with.

Awesome place. I had a private room and just loved it there. Pool to cool off in. Nice little tiny restaurant for meals was priced nicely. Owner is just awesome. Super chill hippie vibe to the whole place. Nice and quiet.

I absolutely love Mel James! My daughter had a concussion and a taxi driver took her to Mel's place. I got on the first flight to Roatan and arrived the next day. Mel took loving care of my daughter and gave me such comfort during my panicked state of mind. She took her to the clinic and spent the day with her as I was traveling from NC. She is truly one of the most welcoming host/owners that I have ever met during all of my travels over the years. Mel is very engaged in the guests and goes the extra mile to accomodate our needs. I am so thankful that the taxi driver knew about Mel and took my daughter to her. She was truly an answer to our prayers. She has varied types of rooms and we stayed a 'parent accomodation' that was very nice. We had wonderful breakfasts and lots of friendly conversations with the other travelers and Mel. I highly recommend this hostel to all of you weary travelers that are looking for a place to relax and feel welcomed as you run about this beautiful island! You are my angel on earth Mel James!

We took a little vacation to Sandy Bay. Loved a little swim in the afternoon, then went to town! Nice place to stay to visit the west end. Mel's greatl.

Perfect place at the perfect price. Relatively close to west end and so its just a short taxi ride away. Good kitchen and rooms. Gets hot so there are individual fans on each bed which is amazing. Everything is super clean and there are allergy covers on the mattress. Beautiful pool as well. Loved it.

Fantastic place. Rooms were clean and the perfect size and the grounds were awesome. The fact that there is a pool here is amazing and the staff and owner Mel are all extremely friendly. I only stayed one night before a flight because I had heard great things and I wasn’t disappointed. Lovely place and will be back in the future.

Everything I could have hoped for — friendly, clean, and quiet. Mel is amazing — she gives you a tour of the place then tells you everything you need to know about the island. She even gave me a free room upgrade because of some booking confusion. Solid Wi-Fi as well. Highly recommend.

Nice relaxing hostel. Has a cool and friendly vibe, and is only a short and affordable bus ride away from West End or coxen hole. It also has a communal kitchen to cook in, restaurant and picturesque pool. Also, the beach across the road is really good for having a quiet beer at sunset. Mel is really helpful and has a wealth of knowledge on what to do in Roatan.

Hello and good day. Im giving this hostel five stars. I have stayed in many places but rarely do I find a spot that feels like home. Its a warm welcoming atmosphere and a clean enviroment. Mel and her boys live here and interact with guests making you feel as though you've waken up at a relatives house. The kitchen is great and her restaraunt was very good and very cost effective. Yes! I would stay here again and probably will. Check it out. Its a good safe place.

Fantastic hostel. Mel is the perfect host. She gave us tons of information, provided fun day trips, saved us lots of money through her advice and affordable housing and has a nice property with pool and shared kitchen. The location is close to the west end and very close to Sandy Bay beach for a beautiful snorkel. I would certainly stay here again!

This place is awesome. Very clean and secure rooms. Staying here is like staying with relatives (the ones you like) more so than anything else. Wonderful vibe and great people. Delicious food too!

Stayed here for three weeks during my IDC program with GoPro Anthony's Key Resort. Mel is incredibly hospitable and runs a very good hostel. I stayed in private room with en-suite bath that is right next to the kitchen. When you arrive, Mel or Melissa will help get you settled, give you a tour, and an island briefing with LOADS of useful information. I suggest taking notes — especially with regard to groceries and taxi pricing. I was blown away by how thorough she was. There's lots to do at the hostel and Mel regularly organizes day trips or boat trips for a nominal cost. They even offer to do your laundry for bargain pricing. Don't bother taking your laundry to West End! The food in the little restaurant is perfect. Just what you need to get your day started. I loved the balleadas and the breakfast sandwich. You can even join for dinner, just make sure to let Mel know ahead of time so she can make enough for you! And don't be afraid if she makes a vegetarian dish because she's a super whiz in the kitchen and you'll love whatever she whips up! No matter where you're headed in Roatan, this hostel is super central to everything. Two little convenience shops within a few minutes walk and the ocean is only five minutes away. Very nice price, good ambiente, if you want to be social there is a lot of places in hostel, very kind owner Mel always also organize some activities and events. During my stay we celebrate hostel birthday, I even got cake for my birthday :)
If you need peace to rest, study or work you can find it easy, hostel also is covered with Wi-Fi. At the end I also got free ride to the airport.

Great value! Friendly staff. Keep in mind it's a hostel not a resort. Small restaurant on site. Pool was nice. Courtyard was relaxing. It's just a block off the main road. Rooms are safe to leave your things in. Safe area to walk around in. Easy to catch a cab or bus from the main road. Only 3 of the rentals have air conditioning option (I recommend it) Owner lives on site is is very attentive to your needs and questions.

Nice hostel, lovely staff and it was very clean. Close to a snorkel place, you can rent gear for 5 dollars. The owner cooks dinner every night, and you can join in for 6 dollars. Has a kitchen, book exchange, swimming pool.

I spent 3 nights in Roatan Backpackers consumed. All in all, it is a beautiful plant, nonetheless, some little things bothered me. The kitchen was almost always crowded and is very small for the many guests. The owner requires 15$ for pick up from the ferry, the Bus is 3$, for me, is a rip-off. The Internet was not very fast and the bathroom is not clean. The location I would describe as mediocre. All in all: okey, but there are places on Roatan are cheaper, more beautiful and more comfortable.

Cheap, simple, and clean. Located a few steps from the road of Sandy Bay, the climate is fairly cool and with the fan on and the windows open is not necessary A/C also has a swimming pool. Eat a very rich in your kitchen.

My wife and I love staying in hostels, for the informal atmosphere and the fun of meeting fellow travellers from all around the world — we actually met in a hostel 8 years ago! For our week-long trip to Roatan, we needed a base of operations from which to explore the island, scuba dive, snorkel and relax. Roatan Backpackers' Hostel proved the perfect spot. We decided to stay in one of the hostel's self-catered apartments, which meant we had two bedrooms (one of which we filled with luggage and diving/snorkelling gear), a cute little kitchen and our own bathroom. The king-size double bed was comfier than our bed at home, and we had a big balcony/porch, equipped with a hammock and overlooking the pool. The hostel also has smaller suites and dorms, but as a couple travelling with a bunch of luggage (rather than backpacks) the extra space was perfect. We met a bunch of awesome people also staying in the hostel, several of whom we ended up exploring the island and scuba diving with. Everyone was friendly, relaxed and had interesting stories to share. The hostel has some great common areas, including a pool, sun-loungers and a little restaurant, so it's easy to meet other guests. We were fortunate to be around for the hostel's awesome birthday party, featuring a live reggae band, and the guests and hosts often go out together for drinks and dancing. The hostel has deals negotiated with some local businesses, including a big discount at Octopus Dive School for guests.

Mel was great. Lots of hang out spots and a sense of community among the people staying there.

The location is not very good, there is Wifi.

It is located in a quiet area and very close to the fun of the West End.

Stayed here for two weeks, loved it. There was a really nice mix of older and younger travelers, and its a small enough hostel that everyone got to know each other well. Rooms are clean, water is hot, no problems whatsoever. Mel, the owner, is great, she really looks out for you and helps you have a great time doing whatever you're on the island to do (which for most people is diving with a little bit of partying). Can't wait to go back!
