Hotel Kulusuk

Everything that had to go wrong on a holiday, went wrong on this one and yet it was one of our best holidays ever. And a lot of the credit for making it our best vacations goes to Jakob and his amazing team at Hotel Kulusuk.
Kulusuk wasn’t a part of our planned Greenland Itinerary. We went to Tasiilaq on a 8 days dog sled tour but thanks to a snowstorm, all flights got cancelled and we were stranded in Kulusuk for 6 days.
Jakob, the proprietor of Hotel Kulusuk, became a father figure for the 20-25 of us stranded there, ensuring we had the most awesome food, support of the warmest staff, becoming the go to person for all updates about the weather situation and flight updates (Air Greenland unfortunately were not responsive but Jakob more than made up for that, keeping us updated by coordinating with the airport authorities directly as well), helping us keep the necessary authorities updated about our visa situation, chilling around with guests at the end of the day at the bar as well — he was there for us all the time.
When I was planning our Greenland trip, I was apprehensive about the food, since I do not eat sea food at all and am more of a vegetarian. The food served at Hotel Kulusuk was absolutely awesome — it was one of the best Vegetarian cuisine I ve had and my husband loved the non vegetarian cuisine served there as well — we are avid travellers and for us to find the food in a remote place like East Greenland so good speaks volumes about the chefs at Hotel Kulusuk.

The remotest accommodation I have been in my entire life. We enjoyed the ride from the airport to their location and back in their cart. The accommodation was basic but expected. The staff was really warm and friendly. The hot meal service was great. This place really evoked your inner self reflections. I truly felt blessed to have lived the life I have and grateful for the little things in life that I took for granted. You can discover yourself again while sitting outside, enjoying the unrestricted views, breathing the freshest air. What a bliss.

Complete weirdness happening here, seems like the manager is mentally unwell. Strange mood swings, unreliable information about room availability and ended up charging wrong amount twice more than it supposed to be. Stay away if you can.

Good hotel near the airport. Room was nicely done, though the walls are quite porous and you can hear your neighbours. Meals were good. A friend used the sauna which looked pretty cool. Shower drain had a strange smell coming from it. Friendly staff.

Got a wonderful night of sleep here. Both dinner and breakfast were good considering their remote location. Would you like to try to keep it provisioned? I don't like salmon, but mine was very good at dinner. The rooms are basic, but I don't expect a five star lodging on an island off the Greenland coast in a village of 300. They were reminiscent of 1960's roadside motels in the States. Charmingly retro. The shuttle from the airport was a short ride, and we had a tour of the village and their small museum. All in all, a wonderful stay and experience.

Hotel Kulusuk is a wonderful hotel with even more wonderful staff members working there! The rooms are clean and cozy, the food is plentiful and delicious, and the staff is accommodating and helpful. There is also a common space with comfortable couches where you can read or play games, as well.
Elvira took care of us at Happy Hour and dinner each night and Jacob was great to talk to and made sure we had everything we needed — they were just two of the amazing staff on hand! Jacob even worked at getting us a boat tour in when his normal boat broke down the day we arrived. Also, Jacob’s dog, Holly, lives out back and we had a blast playing with her and her puppies!
One tip would be to bring a window covering or a sleep mask if you’re staying in the summer, as there is only a light curtain to cover the window.
Overall, I cannot recommend Hotel Kulusuk enough — I hope to return again in the future!

I was in Kulusuk two weeks ago on a backpacking trip. My plan was to sleep under the sky in a sleeping bag. When I arrived, airport officials advised me to leave my luggage at the Kulusuk hotel. While walking towards the hotel with a 23 KG bag and three small camera + drone bags, someone stopped his van next to me. It was Jacob, who loaded my luggage into the van and dropped me off at the hotel. There, I realized he was the chief staff at the hotel. Despite not being his customer, he still took the best care of me in Kulusuk. He ensured that I was carrying a rifle and bear spray to protect myself from polar bears. He also made sure I slept in a safe place and had a good breakfast at the hotel. More than the town itself, which is definitely worth visiting, I will remember Jacob and his genuine care for every guest who comes to Kulusuk. I did tip him, but I don't think it was enough by Greenland standards. I have carried that guilt with me for the past two weeks. He requested that I drop it in the donation box for the school kids. This is a gem in the edge of civilization. The food is truly fantastic. The service is outstanding. The ride to the hotel is bumpy… but so are most roads in East Greenland. The views from the rooms are spectacular…
