Alt-Weimar

This is an interesting hotel for sure.
The rooms are actually pretty good — a good size for the price and the bathroom is great. The beds are comfy, but the pillows are pretty bad and lumpy. The building is quite old, so naturally there’s no AC which was fine for our needs and it was a fine temperature inside, but it wasn’t exactly hot outside. The rooms are clean albeit a bit musty. There were numerous spiders in the room. Don’t open your windows at night, because spiders got in super easily. Room cleaning was fine but left us with an almost empty toilet roll (with an extra) in our bathroom when we first arrived.
The check in makes absolutely no sense and is a huge pain. If you check in at normal time (3pm to 8pm), they make you drag your bags all the way to a hotel about a 7-10 min walk away. The walk with big suitcases is just embarrassing since the hotel you check in at is on a big cobblestone road so wheeling the bags on it is super loud and makes everyone look at you from the restaurants. And then you have to do the walk again back to Alt Weimar so of course everyone stares at you again. But apparently if you arrive after 8 they just give you a key code? Why isn’t that just the default and make me prepay for the rooms instead of having us go all the way there?
With that said, all the staff at Hotel Erbenhof (where you check in) were fantastic and super lovely. The location is good and all the major sites are within walking distance.

Alt-Weimar, Odd place, seems more of Restaurant with added rooms. On the plus side spotlessly clean. I stayed in small room, up stairs. (no elevator). No real reception area open. That is awkward if just arrived. Restuarant expensive for evening only. Was always told fully booked, when by my return at hotel by 9pm from town, was clearly not. On one night at approx 9pm I asked at bar for a glass of wine, in the small anti-room at bar. I was told No, "why not " and was told all tables reserved only one single elderly lady in room, I stood my ground and duly got my drink. The lady at her table laughed at my confusion, (she was Swiss, German) so no language problem. And told me she was told the same. Place was empty. The lady said " this is a strange place. " Also no breakfast, only at another location. No beverage maker in room. Only small bottle water (for sale). Again plus points, 10 min. Walk to town, very quiet location, and clean. But many more hotels I n area, and town full of good eateries.
