I booked Kayak Lodge because I was joining River People on a rafting trip. River People and Kayak Lodge have the same owner/operator — a very pleasant Irishman who has lived in Tena since he was nine years old. His family began rafting expeditions in the area.
My cabin was perfect in every way. Spacious and comfortable, designed well using superior fittings — it is by far the best accommodation I’ve enjoyed in almost three months of Latin American travel.
Only five cabins surround a small pool plus breakfast and bar area. There’s poolside chairs and lush gardens.
Breakfast is included in the price and again rates top position in my opinion of all breakfast inclusive accommodation I’ve had in my three months of travel.
I’m not a five or even four star traveller — rather a three and sometimes two star — spending US$20 to US$30 per night. Kayak lodge is a little more but worth every dollar.
David, the manager is a gracious host attentive to everyone’s needs and helped organise my onward transport to Quito.
And then there’s the rafting! Exhilarating adventures on either Level three or Level four rivers. I did both, having decided to stay an extra day! Philippe and Victor are expert raft and kayak operators. Safety is foremost and the gear is well maintained.
I recommend staying at Kayak Lodge and joining River People on their rafting trips.
We had a fantastic stay here, some of the best food we had the entire trip to Ecuador, which is saying something, because we ate some really great food. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very creatively arranged around a great pool. It really feels like a set of cabins set in a garden, on the edge of the jungle. David took excellent care of us from when we arrived to when we left, and Tim, the owner, was around for some wonderful conversation and also a really great kayak lesson in the morning before we head out. We will definitely come back if and when we get to come back to Tena.

The property is absolutely beautiful and well-maintained. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. The rooms are unique, spotless, and have a warm atmosphere, high-quality furniture, and super comfortable beds.
Honestly, I can’t think of a single downside. My kids were thrilled and said it was the coolest place they’ve ever stayed.
The pool is clean, comfortable, and perfect for both relaxing and playing.
Breakfasts were amazing, and you can also order food during the day or for dinner — it’s all homemade and delicious, prepared with love.
They also offer full-day rafting trips, which is a great adventure.
Overall, everything here was just wonderful. A truly special and comfortable place.
