It was underwhelming for the price. At check in I took a luggage trolley outside for the bags, loaded it up and took it down the hall and was surprised to find there is no elevator. The front desk agent and housekeeper didn't mention anything while I was checking in. Pictures online don't show the chain linked fence around the pool and this is quite deceiving. There were cigarette burn marks in the drapes and carpet. There was no bathroom fan and no screens on the windows. I have spent less money on very nice accomodation and would not spend more than $50 on this hotel even during high season.

It is the most OLD HOTel I never see. The beds they are old are broken! Tv OMG very old and bad quality. But the service it is ok towels always clean, the pool it is warm and everyone is friendly! The location amazing, it is just has to be updated.

Great location. Just a few minutes from the wharf. Rooms are small & the bathroom could use some updating however for a short stay it suits the purpose. Outdoor pool is nice for the kids. The staff are friendly & extremely helpful. I would stay again.

Pros: staff was very nice very efficient cheap to stay… only 50 bucks a night theres a fitness room, pool and a church room was very clean they had a mini fridge and microwave cons: Wi-Fi singal is very weak in certian rooms tv is very old… looks like it was from the 90s the A/C is not at all efficient… doesnt really alter the room temperature so its very hot during the summer the water temperature will take sometime before you sense a change in temperature.

Rooms were clean, lots of hot water, service was great! Had the hot tub and pool to ourselves throughly enjoyed the "volleyball". Very vintage. Loved it!

My family has been staying at this hotel for several summers now, with no complaints. We had always received excellent customer service. We tried to book again for this summer, and double check with reception because we were having some issues online, and I have to say, I am extremely disappointed. The receptionist, Billie, was extremely rude. It's almost as she was annoyed of doing her job. She even started getting frustrated and tried to just get us to hang up and said "how am I suppose to help with you online reservation if you didn't book directly through reception"… Perhaps because your website is connected to your computer's data base. I really hope management does something about this lady. I would hate for Billie to affect my perception of the hotel that we've been loyal to for so long.

Everything you need for an overnight stay for a reasonable price. Clean, well maintained and free Apple's and coffee in the morning. Desk clerks were friendly and helpful.

Front desk arranged for last minute early check-in when we ambled in with all our camping gear and two small kids, thank goodness. Took a quick dip in their outdoor pool and had a short walk to the waterfront for dinner and ice cream. Hung out at the big playground in the park right across from the hotel. A bit noisy until about 10 but super comfy beds and good air conditioner so slept fine. Convenient 24 hour Tim Horton's across the street so all in all great location and would consider staying again.

Hotel is clean, albeit outdated. It's like stepping back into the '70's. The floors creaked just outside my room, which was a little unsettling. There's a liquor store just outside that shares a parking lot… this could be ideal for some. Rooms were clean, bathrooms were in good condition. The service was unprofessional, when I was checking out I told the counter lady that I was in hurry and she took longer than ever, explaining silly things in detail. So, yeah thanks for that, never coming back.

May experience at the hotel was good, not excellent, but I guess at this price point I should not expect more. The room was clean and properly equipped — fridge, iron, heater, hairdryer. There is a free Wi-Fi with decent speed. The only issue is the age of the building. Everything is squeaky and makes noise, any movement of anyone in rooms around you can be heard. You can hear them talk too which is annoying at night. Overall experience was good. Location and pricing made up for noise.

Very convenient location for the people who dont have car. Easy access to bus. Tim hortons is 2mins walk away. Wonderful stay. Hotel room was clean. Staff was also good.

The Howard Johnson has not been updated since The 1980s. The carpets are dated and worn, the blankets are threadbare. The sheets and linens are probably the newest thing here. The pool is outdoors and peanut shaped. There was a crusted stain on the curtains. The furnishings are also from the 80s. CRT televisions, microwaves, Mr coffee coffee makers and a minifridge are what you get here. There was a desk and television stand, along with chairs. The rooms were clean. There was free ice and the staff were friendly and helpful. The location was about a 10 minute walk from downtown.

The staff are super friendly, and the rooms are great. I love how we close we are to the ocean. Its also great to be so close to a Tim Horton's. There is lots of shopping nearby, and lots of things to see and do within driving distance.

The location of the hotel is pretty nice and right near the highway, and there's a 24hr Tim Horton's across the street which is nice. The room was nice, clean and well maintained, but I would have liked it better if we had a fridge and I couldn't get the Wi-Fi to work.

Can't get better for the price.

Nice rooms with decent bathrooms. However it is kind of sketchy, the windows don't lock and open large enough for a person to fit through. The windows are also very exposed to the outside world and guest in perpendicular to you room can see in if you don't have your blinds closed.

Pet friendly and close to the ferry. Older building. Room was clean… Except for the mould in the shower…

For the money it's the best bang you are gonna get for it. It's clean, it's comfortable, the front desk is super friendly, the location is central and close to everything you need. Well recommended if you are passing by. Maybe not for business travel. But I think definitely the best value deal.

Awesome Large Nanaimo Location.

If you're on business, you should probably look elsewhere. If you're passing through, you should probably drive further in either direction or accommodations elsewhere in Nanaimo.

Looking for a place to stay comfortably for a night? Well, it might be "good enough" when you're tired and want to sleep in the first bed you can find. But if you're like me and live out of hotels for weeks at a time (for work in my case) then do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. The Wi-Fi is absolutely horrible. I've had better quality (and more consistent) internet in work camps hundreds of miles away from the nearest town. Do you like to refrigerate your food? So do I! We have something in common! Sadly, I must forgo this luxury for the duration of my stay at Howard Johnson Nanaimo. Okay well how about at least a hot meal from the microwave? No? I am about ready to book into the hostel down the road. At least they have a fridge.

Awesome Nanaimo Location.

If I could give zero stars I would, security thug snoring in the lobby, check, dirty sheets, check, plastic twist tie in the hash browns, check, car broken into directly in front of door, check, unhelpful manager, check. This place should be bulldozed avoid at all costs, end of story.

It's nothing special. But it's in a beautiful part of town. Old tv's. Just a standard room.

The room smelled like urine, the carpet in the room hallway was lifting, the front desk staff in the morning were grumpy, the room said it came with 'complimentary cookies and water' only water was present. Not that cookies are a big deal, but for 30 dollars more than I paid to stay in the Super 8 Victoria, which was updated recently, I expected better. I will not stay here again.

First thing we found underwear laying on the ground, then found that the blankets were burnt as if somebdy was smoking in the room, tried to take a shower but the hot water never came on and we couldn't shut the valve, and there was french fries in the air conditioner. They gave us a new room and only found out that the hot water wasnt working there either. I warn you, don't stay at this hotel if your expecting a quality sleep for the right price. It's comparable to a $50 motel.

The hotel was built when they could afford to build large comfortable rooms. Quiet and friendly atmosphere highlighted the stay. Located near pleasant walks through parks and nearby city waterfront. Also included was the free breakfast buffet at the Millstone restaurant, which is part of the hotel. (No problem getting seconds either. ) Staff went out of their way to find a suitable discount rate during the reservation process.
