Super well located, in the heart of Montreal. Kitchen super large and very well equipped. Dynamic team.

We went with our kids to a private room and it was perfect. Clean and spacious rooms.

Best friends in the world are in this hostel. Come and have good supper, super entertainment with them and of course you will sleep in security.

I spent one night at Auberge Alternative. Despite arriving late and in an addled state (no sleep the night before), instructions from the front desk were clear & judicious. The large living, cooking and eating area was organized, clean & cozy. The mixed dorm room was already quiet and dark before midnight and remained so all night. I have never slept so well in a dorm room full of people & I could tell you stories! I had to get up at 6AM & did it without noise (not easy in all hostels). No squeaking bunks. An easy room to organize my stuff the night before for a quiet getaway. Thoughtful privacy curtains for those on bottom bunks. Hot water in the shower! Clean bathrooms and common areas. Later I returned for a healthy inexpensive & varied breakfast. Easy to relax in living area. I got very comfortable in a very short stay. I will be back in November. It’ll be a friendly resting place in that dark cold month.

The place is well managed, staff is nice. They are prepapref for people going there on a hunch or staying long term. Considering the location and the cheap price, it is a bargain.

Amazing location, very close to downtown, right in old Montreal. People there were very friendly and helpful, rooms were a bit too small for a family of 4 but it was fine for the price.

Stayed there for one night only, July 1st 2018, in room Orange. The staff is friendly, the common area is clean and people are respectful. Giving 2 star only because I was bitten by bed bugs. It's unfortunate. I emailed the staff and they said they would handle it. I did ask if they would be keen to refund the price of the hydrocortisone cream (a mere $11.49) which I think is fair but no answer thus far. Anyway, not a bad hostel overall. Great location. Bugs are a bummer tho.

Friendly atmosphere, cheap and well located buuut I was put in a huge room with at least 12 other people. You may have to wait for bathrooms or toilets and the place becomes dirty real quick. That being said the manager is very accomodating and everyone is chatty.

Great experience, staff very friendly, and well organized, location is perfect close to everything, breakfast deal cool choice, the bunkers beds was nice it was my first time since I was kid sleeping in one of those, I definitely enjoyed the experience and I will come back to this Hostel, definitely recommending it, it’s a great cheap alternative.

Very well positioned, very comfortable and quiet. All the amenities are available. It feels like this place was designed by someone who journey, all are there.

Competitively-priced, well-located, and friendly atmosphere. I had no problems with the management or the other residents. It is a bit dirty though and privacy, even for a hostel, is quite lacking.

One of the best hostels I have been in. Clean, safe, organized, fun. Friendly staff. Ask for local recommendations and they gladly help. I wish the common area stayed open all night. The common area is always quite live and bright, you really enjoy the time you hang out in there. There is free coffee and books, you can spend hours without even noticing. They are always playing hip music, which makes the ambience even more fun. There are tables and chairs that are just the right height to work on your laptop without getting a back pain. And the are couches to lounge on on the cozy corner. The common space is clearly designed for efficiency and collaboration. The tenants are fun and chill. The most lovely ones seem to be using French all the time but they can converse in English just fine too. The whole space is very clean; shower area is off limits for shoes which means the area remains very, get clean. The toilets are clean and has always smelled nice. No food allowed in the rooms but you have plenty of room to make your own food and have them in the kitchen area. Quiet hour after 12:30am. The is no parking. If you need parking, there are public pay parking lots nearby. However you can use the street parking which is free overnight. Parking cops don't seem to be super vigilant around here about meters, but be sure to check parking restrictions, you will surely be ticketed or worse, towed away if you make an illegal parking.

For a hostel, this is as good as it gets. It's clean, fairly well taken care of, in a cool building in a great part of town, it has a large common room with a full kitchen set up. I swore off hostels after Europe, this one changed my mind.

Service was great, and my room was cozy. A good deal and great location for the price. However, know that this place is ALL stairs. It's like three flights up just to get to the reception desk. Pack light.

Almost spent a month in this hostel and it was a very good time! It is pretty well located in the old Montréal, close to everything.
When I was getting to the 20 bed dorms I was a bit afraid but it is actually OK. The room is spacious and the bed are comfortable. Also you got curtains for your intimity!
The staff is very nice and friendly, always happy to help and give you some informations and the main room is good to meet people and chill!

Simple place but they receive you and treat you very well, excellent for travellers, very good in their genre.

I recently spent 7 nights at this hostel and it was great! The location is great; it was nice to be right in Old Montreal. It was a quiet and laid-back environment; the common room was a good place to sit and relax for a bit and the kitchen was well-equipped to make meals. I stayed in the rose room; it had 6 beds with storage underneath, a fan and an air conditioner for the nighttime. The bathrooms and showers were shared with all rooms on the floor, but I never experienced a lineup more than a couple of minutes, and I saw staff cleaning the bathrooms and rooms on a daily basis. If I come back to Montreal again, I will definitely be booking a room here.

I stayed at the hostel for one week, my first time out of the country and of course first time in Canada (let alone Quebec or Montreal). I was welcomed by a lot of the staff and with the general set up, easily felt at home while in the hostel, familiarizing myself with the kitchen, free food/communal goods, and getting to know more about the hostel managers and other guests via the open lounge and fun playlists every evening. It made a huge difference on my trip as I got more comfortable in Montreal and at the end of the day could always go back and know I'd probably have a few hours of conversation back at the hostel after dinner.

Location is great. Walking distance to everything. Be prepared for many, many stairs! There's no elevator so try to pack relatively lightly. Also, no air conditioning. Summers are hot as hell. Kind of sad when the room is hotter than outside. Showers are awesome. Stayed in a four person dorm and it was small, but nice. Great to have privacy curtains for the bottom bunks. One thing of note though was the cleaning. We had a bit of a special set up as we had a group of 4, and we booked out a 4 person room. So it was a big shock to us when we woke up at 10am to a lady to let herself in to empty the garbage. At one point, we came back to the hostel during the afternoon and saw our door wide open, with one of the ladies cleaning out the fan by our stuff. We didn't lose anything, but it was alarming for sure. Make sure to lock your things up, even if you're in a room with only people you know.

The hostel is great! The employees are too nice, we can see that they love to work the. The kitchen is large and one finds all the equipment. I can recomender book! :)

Nice rooms, clean bathrooms, friendly service. My one real complaint is that unless you are on a bottom bunk (which fill up fast), it is way too difficult to get access to a plug that both allows you to charge your phone/iPod and keep it near enough to you for security.

We stayed here a few nights while attending the Canada Grand Prix. The location was great (right off of the main street for old town). It was a little loud at night but didn't bother us. They have lockable areas under the beds for your stuff (bring your own lock). They also offer to hold your stuff. That being said, they don't always "hold"it. Unless you special request and your stuff is small, they let you leave it in the common room, unsecured. We did that and it wasn't a problem but it did make me nervous. The common room was great. Nice kitchen space with all the works. Also plenty of tables for eating or playing games (they have some for you). Also a couch and comfy chairs to reminisce on the day. Staff was very nice. There are suggested restaurants and places on the wall, try them out!

As soon as I walked into the place I could tell I was going to like this auberge. The staff and owners are have been super helpful and friendly whenever I needed some assistance. The kitchen has everything you could really want for cooking or baking, and haven't seen another hostel that has so many spices. Be prepared to climb a bunch of stairs though, especially if you have a lot of luggage. Thankfully there is always people, other than staff, to help you with that sort of thing. All in all, this is one of the most welcoming hostels I have had the pleasure of staying at.

Don't know about the other rooms but do not go to the yellow one… Tiny beds, no air, no showers… 30$… Seriously?!

I loved this hostel where I made some wonderful encounters. Everything is clean, recycled and organic. A great hostel located in the old town, 100% alternative, 100% fun, and more affordable. Go for it you will not regret.

I spent 10 days at the Alternative Hostel of old Montreal, and I have nothing to complain about! The setting is beautiful, with walls made of bricks and its retro feel which gives it its cachet (being more about other hostels). The common room where held the reception is very friendly, really made way to meet new people, with a space for 'chiller' and another to eat (with a fully equipped kitchen and compartments to store his food). The rooms are clean, bed 0 chips in this (yet many in Montreal! ) AJ. As for the staff, it was very well received and they help you without problems for any type of information (as a student exchange, I had a lot of questions). About the location, the neighborhood is relatively quiet and at the same time we're only 15 minutes from the centre on foot. All for an affordable price! In short I recommend 100% and I would definitely stay there again if I get the chance.

Very, very clean hostel. I saw the cleaning staff cleaning the bathrooms and showers at least once a day. Provided clean linens and towels for us as soon as we arrived, as well as locks for the lockers located under the beds/bunks. I stayed here while traveling to a conference with my university, and for the price we paid, it was better than expected. I rated it 4 stars only because the location was a little out of the way, and I also had to constantly keep running up and down flights of stairs because the hostel spans about four stories, and I found that inconvenient.

Generally this place is very good, but the dorms can be loud on the weekends. The hostel is clean and the staff is pretty friendly. Breakfast is organic, but very much a "continental" and perhaps not worth the $5 for the all-you-can-eat option. Can't beat the location for Old Montreal, but there is nowhere to hang out in the hostel after hours — — they close up the common area at 12:30am. Overall, I would stay here again. I think the owners hearts are in the right place, but it can be a bit rough around the edges.

Thoroughly satisfied with my experience. Nice location, fair rates, relaxed atmosphere, and seems to not attract all the drunk backpackers stumbling through. I also enjoyed the ambiance and the staff was kind and helpful. It may not have all the frills of other hostels but it serves its purpose well. Heads up, not sure if the other hostels take American Dollars but this one only takes Canadian. No worries though since its only 3 blocks from from an ATM and fairly close to an exchange station as well. Enjoy.

I loved my stay at the Alternative hostel! The staff is welcoming and helping, they know the plug out! There is a very family atmosphere and feels like home! Places are relatively clean, the hostel is located 15 minutes walk from the theatre district and it is not expensive for the location in old Montreal. Me my place, I'm going back as soon as I get the chance.

The place to be! Great hostel with a worthy of a real hostel atmosphere! The receptionists are nice and friendly. The common room very friendly and perfect for making knowledge with others. Services on top of coffee and milk at will without any control, charming places and of the districts operate a max!
No complaints, just to recommend.

This is not your average "hole in the wall" hostel. This hostel is inviting, friendly and clean. There is a kitchen where you can store your food, cook, eat. The location is right in the heart of Old Town Montreal which has great shops, museums and dining. I would stay here anytime I visited Montreal.

Stayed at Auberge Alternative about three weeks ago for a two-night stay when a girl in a neighboring bed mentioned that she had been bit by bedbugs. I didn't pay any mind considering the rave reviews by others, came back and realized about a week later I now have bed bugs. Be very careful while staying there and keep your luggage wrapped in plastic should you decide to stay there. There was also two thefts while I was was there. Jeans were stolen and I saw a written plea for the safe return of a camera. Cheap yes, but worth it? You make the decision.

If the place is great (meduim clean), the living room-kitchen close at 1 am, no place to hang out, so drink a beer and go to bed because there is no night recptionist. It looks like an hostel but it s more like a library or a church (good place for my parents or my granMa. ), plus the staff doesn t really help, they are cops, no joking, don t even try to have a load laugh. So good place for my grandMa or addicted sleepers.
