Protea Hotel by Marriott Gaborone Masa Square

WOW! Experienced hospitality at a next level. Staff were helpful, even staying after knock off to first resolve and assist, phenomenal. The surrounding area (haven't seen any unsightly anything) were spotless, quiet (despite being a weekend), no loud noise and I can go on and on. Will go back anytime. Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Perfect location within the CBD. Short stroll to the Fields Mall with shops and supermarket. Btw, our stay is in a 1 BR apartment style unit. The fridge is massive. I can't say that loud enough. It's perfect because our stay is for 12 nights so I greatly the size.

My stay at Protea Hotel at Masa Square was actually really great. The room was spotless and well-prepared, with all the essentials thoughtfully provided. I especially appreciated the in-room fridge, which made it easy to store our own chilled drinks a convenient touch.
The bathroom had consistent hot water, just as one would expect from a hotel of this standard. Breakfast each morning was excellent there was a wide variety of options, and everything was fresh, well-presented, and delicious.
The rooftop pool and outdoor bar added a unique and vibrant city experience that’s hard to find elsewhere in Gaborone. It’s the perfect place to unwind while enjoying beautiful views. The indoor gym was another plus, fully equipped, clean, and clearly maintained with care.
Overall, the hotel met my expectations. I would gladly return and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the city.

The location was great. Walking right or left, you can go to three grocery stores and quite a few restaurants.
This hotel has the best staff. All requested were immediately taken care of. I am a breakfast person, and after the third day, the staff cooking eggs would start on my eggs and take bacon, and make it crispy.
I would occasionally go to the third floor and sit on the terrace. The bar was never staff, but a waiter would come up and take orders.
My room was large and spacious. Some people talked about the older decor, but I look for cleanliness. My room was very clean, and bottled water was put in the fridge daily. I could write a lot more but try it for yourself. They are updating the property.

Plumbing is a problem. Not only water in pipes to shower… not talk about outdated showers in the bath. The flushing of lavatory is also a problem. The normal rooms bathroom is not what I expect of a 4-star hotel. Upgrading clients to the club room will not solve the issue. The staff is friendly and helpful. A great stay turned it a flat ok stay. The food is of good standard both breakfast, dinner and room service.

They have an incredible burger which we had been missing we happily visited our regular spot, to our amazement and disappointment we were totally ignored by the Staff we sat ourselves down 10mins later nobody came, even to greet and promise to come, we decided to leave however sort out the Manager who was just 4meters Away playing on his Phone, this is very disappointing behaviour for a rated international Hotel!
The Food is real Good hence we always visit a lot Can be improved with service!

While the location is excellent and the staff are charming, the whole property smells moist and musty, both in public spaces and in the rooms. Is it because they don’t air condition public spaces or vacant rooms and humidity lingers? Not sure, but the odor was a daily irritant over my 5 night stay on the 7th floor. Rooms are older but comfortable, and the shower was really nice with great pressure, though the hot water took a minute to reach the room. The bed was perfection for me — on the firm side. The pool was closed throughout my early March stay, covered in an organic film one day and perfectly clear the next, likely a sign of chemical treatment. The gym is tiny but has some weights, treadmills, and 3-4 yoga mats, though there is no space to use the mats unless they’re taken out to the pool deck nearby. The restaurant downstairs, Carlito’s, has local specials each evening that my colleagues and I thoroughly enjoyed. Their Botswanan cuisine is very tasty! One of the waitresses, Game (pronounced Hi-may), left an excellent impression with her recommendations and friendliness. Final note: avoid 1st floor rooms. A colleague had to switch rooms at 1am the first night because the air conditioner would not function. Also, at breakfast I overheard other guests complaining about various issues with their first floor rooms.

This is a property new to Marriott, and if you are expecting Marriott service, they are not there yet. We visited during the summer, and the air conditioning could not keep up. The bathrooms need to be remodeled, and the service at the restaurant and bar is very close. The location is decent, close to restaurants and a mall.

I'm afraid this hotel (branded with Marriott) is not holding to the Marriott standard.
The room (1st floor) shower and tub was not getting hot. I called and asked and was told, we'll it takes 10 minutes to get hot. So I set my stopwatch and sure enough — 10 minutes it get hot water.
Breakfast was 5 stars.
Room 3 stars — good room, great bed, bathroom shower needs maintenance.
Only 1 coffee pod and not enough water to make coffee an dtea for 2 guests.
Staff — 1 star. Sad to say they were not pro-active, or attentive. Not the Marriott standard.
Nearby Fields mall made it a great location with coffee shops, grocery, and restaurants.

Beautiful, clean, simplistic classic interior design. The location boasts being at the centre of all you may need. The tranquillity is of mountains isolation while still in the middle of a city. So quiet wonder if the hotel is intentionally insulated from external noise. Then you have the gym on the third floor. So clean and well thought of for the space they had to work with. Please keep up the good work.

I agree with other reviewers that the Marriott brand should distance itself from this particular establishment.
1) The main hotel building was overbooked and they put us in the neighbouring building (Masa Suites). This building was far inferior. Shabby hallways, AC in our room was not working (during a heat wave that gripped the entire country), one window handle was broken and the window couldn't be closed and best of all: a nightclub just below our room played super loud music way past midnight. It was impossible to sleep. The receptionist tried to sell this to us as a "free upgrade" and told us not to worry, the music will stop at 11pm. Of course this is not a new problem, other reviewers pointed the same problem out in the past. The hotel could choose to be transparent about it, apologise, offer ear buds, complimentary breakfast and fix the broken window. Instead you have to argue with them. We had to call twice to complain about the noise. They eventually admitted that they had overbooked so couldn't move us to a different room. After making a fuss, they offered the breakfast for free after we demanded this as at least some sort of compensation.
2) Thinking of a morning swim in the hotel pool? Think again. We went to the pool at 9:30am and the entire area was completely filthy, full of trash from last night and the pool water was also disgusting with plastic floating inside. Why not clean up immediately after the party or early morning?

This was "base" for an in-and-out business trip to Botswana. Being central and offering a complimentary airport shuttle, it ticks a lot of boxes.
The staff were professional and the check-in was seamless. A spacious room with a convenient work nook helped settle in. Room service was a little on the slow side (but I did order quite late after getting to the hotel around 8pm). My pasta was filling and tasty, as was the breakfast the following morning — the spread was everything you'd expect from a hotel buffet.
I see quite a few negative reviews, but that was not the case with my experience. Perhaps there's a better/quieter side of the hotel to stay, as the square housed a bar and restaurant. The nearby bar was an opportune venue for some impromptu customer drinks, so there's certainly an upside to its proximity.
I won't hesitate to book for future business trips.

Good hotel. The rooms are spacious and well equip. The staff are friendly and service is good overall. My first time in Botswana and the hotel compares well with others that I have stayed in across the world. Breakfast was great and the conference facility met our requirements.

Friendly staff, rooms are spacious and clean. Plenty of restaurants around. Only maintenance of the rooms could be improved.

The price does not match with quality. Rooms and hotel in general need maintenance. The service is average. The cleaning not good. You to be "good" with the staff to receive a quality service, otherwise is terrible. Lady name starting with K at reception, must be relocated, worst client attention impossible. I will not come back.

Horrible air conditioning, I was saweating in my room. After room change nothing improved.
