Colleton Great House

Colleton is a beautiful, historic guest house in a very private area, with gorgeous views of the water and setting sun. My husband and I loved our stay here and had we known how relaxing it was would have arrived in Barbados earlier to stay more nights.
The managers, Hadrian and Sharon, are wonderful hosts and made us feel like home. They gave us the warmest welcome with a decorated room and white wine for my birthday. They also had their chef prepare a delicious Barbados flavored dinner for us. Thank you to Hadrian, Sharon and all staff for making this time so special!
Pros: wonderful, friendly staff, very nice large rooms, upgraded bathrooms, very good food, beautiful grounds, nice swimming pool, interesting history.
We would most definitely stay here again if in Barbados, only longer.

A special place. A retreat, a sense of history combined with modern amenities. My husband and I had a fabulous stay here. We had an extremely warm welcome from the on-site staff, as if we were old friends. We stayed in the well appointed stables which worked well for me being in the ground floor as I have mobility challenges. The staff also provided a shower chair which was perfect for me. The stylish accommodation was cleaned every day, we had a kitchen with a large fridge and the lounge area was lovely to chill out in and watch TV to relax after busy days. The pool area is very relaxing with great views, some loungers in shade and parasols optional too. The grounds are beautifully kept with tropical trees, flowers, lawned areas — all helped us to relax in the calm of the property. The main historic house is also lovely with the reception rooms filled with art, a great terrace too to enjoy a drink etc and chat to other guests. Given it is a small hotel, we enjoyed both privacy and being able to chat to other guests occasionally too. We took taxis to the beach and dinner, which the very helpful staff booked for us, if we came again, we would probably rent a car.

Colleton Great House is such a unique and beautiful treasure in Barbados! Sharon and Hadrian welcome guests so warmly and make you feel like beloved family. We had the 2 bedroom/2.5 bathroom cottage and did not want to leave. The facilities were spacious, exceptionally clean, beds were comfy, new bathrooms and a stunning/gorgeous view. The cottage has a large kitchen, living room, dining room and a terrace with comfortable furniture where guests can absorb the surrounding beauty for hours on end. They also offer a delicious breakfast. Our visit was brief, but it certainly made quite an impression. We are already talking about a visit next year. Don’t hesitate — book your stay. You won’t regret it!

A most magnificent house of historical importance that’s big on style and character but is run with all the warmth and love of a family.
From our initial correspondence, nothing was too much trouble for man and wife management team Hadrian and Sharon. We have been absolutely spoiled rotten, with incredible lazy breakfasts, an impromptu pool BBQ and trips and taxis organised and taken care of.
The chilled vibes created capture the true spirit of Barbados warmth and hospitality and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting and socialising with other like minded residents who had also made Colleton their home.
Early morning, wild monkeys visit the estate and entertain with their antics and we think, could even be heard clambering around on our rooftop!

This place is an absolute gem and exceeded our expectations at every turn — we were looked after impeccably by Sharon and Hadrian, who went above and beyond in helping us during our stay.
We booked one of the stable residences, which were beautifully fitted out, very spacious and incredibly comfortable. An unexpected pleasure was discovering that the rooms were serviced daily, which isn't always the case in self catering — a touch of serendipity. We had full use of the pool, the breakfasts were sublime and the grand house itself is like stepping into history.
The nightly chanting of the tiny frogs at night added a touch of magic to the spotlit gardens and we caught glimpses of the famous monkeys, as well as having close encounters with some very entertaining wildlife.
But, above all, the good humour and grace of everyone at Colleton Great House were what made us happy and helped us to unwind. After the ostentation and crowds of other hotels in Barbados, the relaxed, yet luxurious charm of Colleton made this part of our holiday truly special. Thank you to everyone, we will be back!

A beautifully run hotel that feels like a home — complete with a 400 year old history behind it. The extensive grounds give it a sense of space and the veranda is a wonderful place from which to watch the stunning sunsets…… The staff are very attentive………nothing is too much trouble and the food is delicious. Each bedroom is different but all are luxurious. An amazing place to unwind and enjoy all the local restaurants and shops but without the bustle of Bridgetown.

It is a truly fantastic guest house with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Hosts Sharon and Hadrian provided first-class service throughout our stay. I would recommend Colleton Great House to anyone looking for a truly memorable trip to Barbados.

Colleton Great House exceeds all expectations. All of the rooms are beautifully furnished and to a very high standard. The staff are wonderful and cannot do enough to ensure that you have the best stay there. The breakfasts are amazing!
The pool is lovely with plenty of comfortable sun loungers and sunbathing is enhanced by spotting the monkeys playing in the well maintained gardens. The most perfect Caribbean beach is nearby too.
Experiencing the sunset from the terrace is something not to be missed.

Beautiful house & great breakfast. Gorgeous sea view from the house. The 2 bedroom cottage & stable apartments are exceptionally nice. Fantastic restaurants in the locality Speightown and Holetown. The staff were very knowledgable and helpful.

This place is amazing. If you've ever walked through a stately house/museum and wondered what it would be like to live in such a place, you have to stay in this hotel. It's a historic home which was once owned by the Colletons — who helped, among other things, found the Carolina colony — and it's unbelievably pretty. This is hands down the coolest place I've ever stayed, and in addition to that it's very peaceful, extremely comfortable, close to the beach, and the breakfast is delicious. If you're heading to Barbados, you have to experience this.

Colleton House was until 2009 the home of an Australian art collector, many of whose possessions still fill the house, including a well-stocked library and above all his astonishing collection of ethnic art, largely collected in Papua New Guinea, which is now stored in the old stable building. It really belongs in PNG or Australia, and its presence here in Barbados in Colleton House came as a wonderful surprise. The house and gardens overlook the coast, about half a mile inland on a raised plot, and when having your breakfast or afternoon drink you can survey the sea and, perhaps, wonder whether the two fairly substantial cannons in the garden — 6' or possibly 7' long — were ever fired as a warning to an unfriendly vessel. The staff were super, friendly and helpful (for example, Vivian was able to make restaurant bookings for us at places that were "fully booked" when we called them) and breakfast was excellent every day. Our fellow guests — none of whom we had met before — were everything we could have hoped for, and our week long stay was like a comfortable and easy-going house party. I suspect Colleton House attracts guests who do not want the usual Barbados hotel experience. At times it reminded me of the Landmark Trust's offerings, and if you like those' you will certainly like Colleton House. We loved it. Its charms unfolded day by day, and it will be top of the list for us as and when we next go back to Barbados.
