Absolutely beautiful location and an absolute perfect meal. Many people from Graz recommended this place so I naturally had to give it a go. The backhandl was apparently what people came for, so that I had to try.
I started with the fleischstrudelsuppe which was very tasty. The broth was nice and meaty with tons of flavor, and the dumplings were equally good. Meat was nice and spiced, and the dough was neither too soft nor chewy. A really nice way to start our meal.
I then had the famous backhandl, and with that I ordered a side of Knödel in gravy sauce. Let’s be completely honest, backhandl is basically fried chicken and that’s definitely not meant in a negative way. I’ve had fried chicken in the US and many other places, but this was without a doubt the best I’ve ever had. The coating was a solid 10/10, cooked perfectly! It’s not an easy thing to coat the chicken perfectly, and cook it equally perfect as well. It takes many tries and iteration until you’ve found the perfect coating for the chicken, and Stoffbauer really nailed that one. Each and every bite was crunchy, with and almost glassy like exterior. Really nice and flavorful.
The Knödel I had was also great. I love Knödel and make sure to try it every time I am in Austria, and this was one of my favorites. The gravy it was served it was rich, meaty and accompanied the Knödel perfectly. I would say it had a kind of demi glaze flavor to it.
Definitely a recommendation from me from now on too!
Very quiet location in the woods of Graz. Classical austrian heurigen kind of style also reflected in the menu.

It was a lovely walk from Graz city center to the restaurant. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere, and I was able to choose a spot on the terrace. I received a warm welcome, and the staff were very friendly. I had the vegetarian curry with a green salad and the apple strudel. The food was excellent. Highly recommended if you're in Graz!
