Cape Nelson Lighthouse

We had a magical 6 nights staying at the head light keepers cottage at Cape Nelson. The property was extremely well presented, very clean and comfortable for our stay. The free range eggs and bacon for breakfast were much appreciated. Sitting on the veranda each evening and watching the sunset was awesome. Taking the lighthouse tour with Gordon was a highlight — he has a huge well of knowledge. Highly recommend a stay at this beautiful place.

What an incredible location. My wife and I recently stayed in the Head Light Keepers cottage, the accommodation was amazing, and the service was great providing us with extras that were unexpected such as bacon and eggs for us to enjoy at breakfast. To look out the window as dusk approached and see kangaroos in the front yard, no more than 10 metres from the front door was incredible, and being ok for us to venture out the front door and take photos was amazing, and the views from the lighthouse less than 100 metres from the front door, an amazing location and just as amazing an experience.

Excellent accommodation in the keepers cottage, and lighthouse tour was fantastic. Gordon is passionate and very knowledgeable, and gave a great history of the area and light house build.

No facilities there. No cafe, no toilet.
Good starting point for Great Southwest Walk sector.

Review of Lighthouse Only (not accommodation options)
A short walk takes you from the car park to the lighthouse and its lookouts over the coastline.
When we were there (Nov), the café was not open and the toilets were locked.

We had a lovely stay in the caretakers cottage for 1 night as a stop over, but wished we stayed for 2!
Stunning location and the cottage was very well equipped with great kitchen cooking equipment, and a washer & dryer.
Was slightly frustrated to arrive and find we had to drive back into Portland to pick up the keys. When I checked, this was communicated at the very end of the fine print in my booking confirmation from Wotif, but a follow up text from the accommodation owners would have prevented this run around & been much appreciated.
Also to note that if staying in the caretakers cottage, you have to walk through the front garden of another cottage to get to the lighthouse, or about 1km along a dirt track to walk around the road.
Lastly, the cafe advertised on website is not open, and looks as if it has been closed for a few years.
Overall highly recommended, just some notes to help other travellers!
The other 3 cottages seemed to have direct access.

Worth a visit if you are in the area, there is a tour for the lighthouse but you would have to book advance. View was breath taking.

Always a great view. We stumbled across some whales which was a rare and exciting surprise. There is accommodation here but we didn't stay here. Looks amazing though. Part of the Great South Western walk. Walked a small section and plan to come back to walk some more. Well worth the drive from Melbourne.

Gordon, the tour guide was fantastic and full of knowledge, with great history on the lighthouse. I would recommend a tour. The views from the top were amazing.

Nice lighthouse, great views and very windy. On a good day you should be able to see whales in whale season.

Stayed in the caretaker's cottage. Very comfortable and relaxing space with the most magnificent scenery.

Beautiful sunset! I only went for sunset photographs. Not sure about anything else but the sunset is a five star!

I went to Cape Nelson Lighthouse, and the lighthouse is beautiful! The views of the ocean and cliff-tops were stunning 😍 too! There's a walking trail as well, which is amazing and covers a lot of ground and cliff tops. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because the toilets were locked and unavailable. Definitely recommend checking the lighthouse out. If you haven't, great history information available too.

This place deserves a 5 ⭐ but sadly all its buildings were closed so it didn’t quite get my full scores, that said it is an incredible light house set amongst a fabulous back drop of the most rugged rocks with the most amazing waves crashing over them… I could have sat there all day watching them! Be sure to walk behind the lighthouse and step beyond the enclosure onto the cliff top walk for the best views — do NOT take young children out there though!

We decided to take it easy today so visiting another lighthouse was in order. Lots of lovely-looking buildings with beautiful scenery and old-style volcano fossils were worth the drive. Pity about wind farms spoiling the East Coast everywhere.

We stumbled on to this precious stay and were so enchanted by the location and room that we stayed an extra night changing our plans to do so. Quiet, serene and beautiful historic accommodation and wallabies in the yard. We spend the day on a great hike and relaxing. Highly recommend.
