Cape Nelson is one of those places that reminds you just how beautiful Australia’s coastline really is. If you’re travelling through the Portland region, this is a stop you absolutely shouldn’t miss.
The drive out to Cape Nelson is scenic, but it’s the breathtaking views that make the trip truly worthwhile. Standing on the cliffs and looking out across the Southern Ocean is an unforgettable experience. The rugged coastline, crashing waves, and endless blue horizon create a peaceful setting that’s perfect for taking a break and appreciating nature.
We were incredibly lucky to spot whales from the lookout, and watching them surface in the distance was a magical experience. Seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat made our visit even more special and is something we’ll remember for a long time. Make sure you bring a pair of binoculars if you’re visiting during whale season—it will make the experience even better.
The area is well maintained, easy to explore, and offers plenty of great spots to stop, take photos, and simply enjoy the fresh ocean air. Whether you’re interested in wildlife, photography, or just looking for a spectacular coastal view, Cape Nelson has it all.
This is one of those hidden gems that stays with you long after you’ve left. We’ll definitely be back.

Stayed through the week with my sister to watch the whales migrate. Saw many whales! Loved the Sunrise Cottage. Felt very secure when the wind picked up for the last two days. Great provisions — breakfasts & wood. Loved our stay.
