Valkenburg Naval Air Base is a former military airfield located in the town of Wassenaar, Netherlands. The air base was established in 1939 and was used by the Dutch Navy until it was decommissioned in 2006. The base was primarily used for training purposes and was home to various squadrons of naval aircraft, including helicopters and fixed-wing planes.
The airfield features a single runway, which measures approximately 2,500 meters in length. The runway is made of concrete and is capable of accommodating a variety of aircraft, including large transport planes. The airfield also features several hangars and maintenance facilities, which were used to service and repair the aircraft stationed at the base.
In addition to its military functions, Valkenburg Naval Air Base was also used for civilian purposes. The airfield was occasionally used for commercial flights, and it was also used as a filming location for several movies and television shows.
Today, the airfield is no longer in use and is largely abandoned. The hangars and maintenance facilities are still standing, but they are in a state of disrepair. The runway is still visible, but it is overgrown with grass and weeds. Despite its current state, the airfield remains an important part of Dutch military history and is a popular destination for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs.
