Skara Brae is a prehistoric village located on the west coast of Mainland, the largest island in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland. The village is estimated to be over 5,000 years old and is considered one of the most well-preserved Neolithic settlements in Europe.
The village consists of eight stone houses that are interconnected by a series of covered passageways. The houses are circular in shape and were constructed using flat stones that were carefully fitted together without the use of mortar. Each house has a central hearth and stone furniture, including beds and storage units.
The village also features a communal workshop and a large chambered tomb that is believed to have been used for ritual purposes. The tomb is made up of several interconnected chambers and features intricate carvings on the walls.
The site was first discovered in 1850 after a severe storm exposed the remains of the village. Excavations began in the 1920s and revealed a wealth of artifacts, including pottery, jewelry, and tools.
Today, Skara Brae is a popular tourist destination and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore the village and learn about the daily life of its inhabitants through interactive exhibits and guided tours.
