Manuela Malasaña was a young woman who lived during the Spanish War of Independence in the early 19th century. She was born in Móstoles, a town located in the outskirts of Madrid, and became a seamstress at a young age. Manuela was known for her bravery and her involvement in the resistance against the French occupation of Spain.
During the Dos de Mayo Uprising in 1808, Manuela joined the fight against the French troops in Madrid. She was only 15 years old at the time and was carrying a basket of needles and thread when she stumbled upon a group of Spanish soldiers who were being attacked by the French. Without hesitation, Manuela used her basket as a weapon and fought alongside the soldiers, earning her the nickname "La Costurera de la Libertad" (The Seamstress of Liberty).
Manuela's bravery did not go unnoticed, and she became a symbol of the resistance against the French occupation. However, her involvement in the uprising also made her a target for the French authorities. In 1808, Manuela was arrested and executed by the French army at the age of 17.
Today, Manuela Malasaña is remembered as a hero and a symbol of the Spanish resistance against foreign occupation. Her name has been immortalized in streets, squares, and monuments throughout Spain, including in her hometown of Móstoles. The town has a museum dedicated to her memory, which showcases her life and legacy as a symbol of courage and patriotism.
