Egg Rock Light is a historic lighthouse located in the coastal town of Bar Harbor, Maine. This iconic structure is situated on a small rocky island in Frenchman Bay, just off the coast of Mount Desert Island. The lighthouse was first built in 1875 and has since served as a navigational aid for ships traveling along the coast of Maine.
The Egg Rock Light is a classic example of a New England lighthouse, with its distinctive red and white striped tower rising up from the rocky island. The tower stands 40 feet tall and is made of brick and granite, with a cast iron lantern room at the top. The lantern room houses a fourth-order Fresnel lens, which emits a flashing white light every six seconds, visible for up to 12 nautical miles.
The island itself is a small, rocky outcropping, with steep cliffs rising up from the water on all sides. The only way to access the lighthouse is by boat, and visitors can often be seen kayaking or boating around the island to get a closer look at the historic structure.
Despite its remote location, Egg Rock Light has played an important role in the history of Bar Harbor and the surrounding area. It has helped guide countless ships safely through the treacherous waters of Frenchman Bay, and has become a beloved landmark for locals and visitors alike. Today, the lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
